Cancer is the leading killer of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, responsible for about 26% of all deaths in the breed. Old age accounts for roughly 21%, and kidney and gastrointestinal diseases collectively make up another significant share. The median age at death is 12.5 years, with most Wheatens living 12 to 15 years and some reaching 17.
But what makes this breed unusual isn’t the cancer risk, which is comparable to many dog breeds. It’s a pair of protein-losing diseases that strike younger dogs and carry a poor prognosis. Understanding these conditions, along with the other major threats, can help you catch problems early.
Cancer: The Leading Cause of Death
In a survey of 111 Wheaten Terrier deaths, 29 were attributed to cancer. That 26% rate is roughly in line with the overall cancer mortality across pedigree dogs (27%), so Wheatens aren’t uniquely cancer-prone compared to other breeds. The most commonly reported tumors include splenic tumors and unspecified cancers. The median age at cancer-related death was 12.5 years, meaning most of these dogs lived a full or near-full lifespan before their diagnosis.
Signs to watch for are the same as in any breed: unexplained weight loss, lumps that grow or change, persistent lethargy, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing. Regular veterinary checkups that include a physical exam and bloodwork give you the best chance of catching tumors before they spread.
Protein-Losing Diseases: The Breed’s Signature Threat
The Wheaten Terrier community considers protein-losing diseases the single most important health challenge facing the breed. These come in two forms: one affects the gut, and the other affects the kidneys. Both cause the body to lose protein it can’t afford to lose, and both carry a poor prognosis once they progress.
Protein-Losing Enteropathy (PLE)
In PLE, the lining of the intestines becomes inflamed or damaged, allowing protein to leak out of the bloodstream and into the digestive tract. Dogs with PLE tend to show signs earlier than those with kidney disease, at an average age of about 4.7 years. Common symptoms include chronic diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and decreased appetite. Because protein levels in the blood drop, some dogs develop fluid buildup in the abdomen or legs.
A study of 222 affected Wheatens found that the prognosis is poor. Early detection through annual blood and urine screening gives vets the chance to intervene with dietary changes and medication before the disease becomes severe, but there is currently no cure.
Protein-Losing Nephropathy (PLN)
PLN targets the kidneys instead of the gut. The kidney’s filtering units become inflamed and scarred, allowing protein to spill into the urine while waste products build up in the blood. The average age at diagnosis is about 6.3 years. Affected dogs typically show high cholesterol, low blood protein levels, and signs of kidney dysfunction that can progress to end-stage kidney failure.
Some Wheatens develop both PLE and PLN simultaneously, with an average onset around 5.9 years. The diseases appear to run in families, strongly suggesting a genetic component. No genetic test currently exists to identify carriers, which is why annual screening is so heavily emphasized by breed clubs.
Renal Dysplasia: A Threat to Young Dogs
Renal dysplasia is a developmental abnormality where the kidneys don’t form properly. It’s ranked as the breed’s second most important health concern after the protein-losing diseases. Unlike PLE and PLN, which typically appear in middle-aged dogs, renal dysplasia shows up much earlier. Dogs with both kidneys affected often die in the first weeks of life. Those with one affected kidney may compensate for a time, but kidney failure usually becomes apparent between 6 months and 2 years of age.
Puppies with early-onset kidney failure may be noticeably smaller than their littermates. They drink and urinate excessively, lose weight, and become lethargic as toxins accumulate in their blood. There is no way to reverse the abnormal kidney development, so treatment focuses on managing symptoms and slowing progression.
Degenerative Myelopathy
The breed’s third-ranked health priority is degenerative myelopathy, a progressive disease of the spinal cord. It typically begins in older dogs with weakness in the hind legs that gradually worsens over months. Dogs lose coordination, begin dragging their back feet, and eventually lose the ability to walk. The condition is painless but irreversible, and most affected dogs are euthanized within one to three years of the first symptoms appearing. A DNA test does exist for the mutation associated with this disease, which can help breeders make informed decisions.
Urinary and Other Causes
Urologic conditions beyond PLN and renal dysplasia accounted for about 8% of deaths in the breed’s largest mortality survey. These include various forms of kidney disease and urinary tract problems that can become life-threatening if they lead to complete kidney failure or urinary obstruction.
The remaining deaths in the survey were spread across a mix of less common causes, including immune reactions and, in rare cases, behavioral issues severe enough to result in euthanasia.
What Screening Looks Like
Because the breed’s most dangerous conditions, particularly PLE and PLN, have no genetic test and no early visible symptoms, annual screening bloodwork and urinalysis are the primary tools for catching problems before they become emergencies. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America recommends yearly testing for all Wheatens, regardless of whether they seem healthy. These tests measure protein levels in the blood and urine, kidney function markers, and other values that shift before a dog shows outward signs of illness.
Early detection won’t cure these diseases, but it can buy time. Dietary adjustments and medications started before symptoms appear may slow progression and extend a dog’s comfortable years. If you own a Wheaten, keeping up with these annual tests is the single most impactful thing you can do for their long-term health.
