What Does a 34-Week Baby Look Like in the Womb?

At 34 weeks, a baby weighs more than 4½ pounds (about 2,100 grams) and measures roughly 12 inches from head to bottom, or around 17 to 18 inches from head to toe. The baby looks much like a full-term newborn at this point, just smaller and leaner. Most of the major development is complete, and these final weeks are largely about gaining weight, building fat, and fine-tuning organs like the lungs and brain.

Size and Body Shape

A 34-week baby has filled out considerably compared to earlier in the third trimester but still carries less body fat than a full-term newborn. Subcutaneous fat has been building steadily, giving the skin a smoother, less wrinkled appearance. The once-translucent skin is now more opaque and pink, though it may still appear slightly thinner than a baby born at 40 weeks. Arms, legs, and cheeks are rounding out, but the baby will continue gaining roughly half a pound per week from here until delivery, so there is still visible leanness compared to a baby born at term.

Skin, Hair, and Coating

Two features that defined the baby’s appearance earlier in pregnancy are fading by week 34. Lanugo, the fine downy hair that covered the body, typically falls off during the last eight weeks of pregnancy. At 34 weeks, much of it has already shed, though patches may remain on the shoulders, back, or ears. That lanugo served a purpose: it helped vernix, the thick, waxy coating that protects the skin from amniotic fluid, stick to the body. By 34 weeks, some vernix remains but is thinner than it was a few weeks ago. Babies born at this stage often still have visible traces of vernix in their skin creases.

Fingernails have reached the tips of the fingers, and toenails are close behind. The baby’s hair on the scalp may be visible, though the amount varies widely from baby to baby.

Eyes and Senses

The eyes have been open since around 27 weeks, and by 34 weeks, significant visual development has occurred. The baby can follow movement with their eyes and has developed the ability to detect color. Interestingly, red is the first color they can see, because the inside of the uterus is bathed in red light. The pupils respond to changes in brightness, so shining a flashlight at the belly can cause the baby to blink or turn away.

Hearing is well developed at this stage. The baby recognizes familiar voices and may startle at loud sounds. Taste buds are functional too, and the baby regularly swallows amniotic fluid, which carries traces of whatever the mother has eaten.

Movement and Sleep Patterns

By 34 weeks, the baby has settled into regular sleep-wake cycles. Most of the time is spent sleeping, alternating between periods of active sleep (similar to the rapid eye movement sleep adults experience) and longer stretches of quieter, deeper rest. During waking periods, the baby moves, but the nature of those movements has changed. Space in the uterus is increasingly restricted, so the dramatic kicks from earlier months have given way to rolls, squirms, and wriggles. You may see visible movement ripple across the surface of your abdomen, even if the sensation feels less forceful than before.

Feeling fewer sharp kicks is normal at this stage, but you should still notice consistent periods of activity each day. A noticeable drop in all movement is worth paying attention to.

Lung Development

The lungs are one of the last organs to fully mature, and at 34 weeks they are close but not quite finished. The lungs are producing surfactant, a substance that keeps the tiny air sacs from collapsing between breaths, but production may not yet be sufficient for completely independent breathing. This is the main reason babies born at 34 weeks sometimes need breathing support in their first days.

Research from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists shows that steroid injections given to the mother before a preterm delivery between 34 and 36 weeks can reduce the need for respiratory support and lower the rate of serious breathing complications from about 12% to 8%. This underscores that while the lungs are nearly ready, they benefit from every additional day of development.

Brain Development

The brain is growing rapidly during the final weeks of pregnancy. At 34 weeks, the surface of the brain is developing the characteristic folds and grooves that dramatically increase its surface area and processing capacity. The connections between nerve cells are multiplying quickly, supporting increasingly coordinated movements, more organized sleep cycles, and better temperature regulation. Despite this progress, the brain at 34 weeks is still noticeably less mature than at full term, which is one reason late preterm babies sometimes have initial difficulty with feeding coordination and body temperature control.

If the Baby Is Born at 34 Weeks

Babies born at 34 weeks are classified as “late preterm,” and the outlook is very reassuring. Long-term health outcomes for these babies are the same as for babies born at full term. In follow-up studies, 34-week babies do just as well as their peers who weren’t born early.

The short-term picture, however, involves some extra support. A 34-week baby will typically spend one to two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. The most common challenges are breathing support as the lungs finish maturing, help maintaining body temperature because of lower body fat, and feeding assistance. Many late preterm babies have not yet fully coordinated the suck-swallow-breathe pattern needed for efficient breastfeeding or bottle feeding, so tube feeding may be used temporarily until they get the hang of it.

A 34-week newborn looks recognizably like a newborn. They’re smaller and may appear slightly thinner in the face and limbs. Skin may look a bit pinker or more delicate, and the baby may be less alert and more sleepy than a full-term infant in the early days. But the overall appearance, ten fingers, ten toes, open eyes, and a face that already looks like a tiny person, is fully formed and unmistakable.
