A barometric pressure headache typically feels like a pounding, pressure-heavy pain that settles around the sinuses, temples, and forehead. It can range from mild to severe and often arrives alongside weather changes, sometimes before a storm even hits. What makes it distinct is the combination of head pain with sinus-like symptoms that can make you feel like you’re getting sick, even when you’re not.

Where and How the Pain Feels

The pain most commonly centers around the sinus areas of the face, the temples, and the front of the head. Many people describe it as a deep, pressing ache rather than a sharp pain, though it can become throbbing, particularly on one side. The sensation often mimics a sinus infection: you feel pressure building behind your cheekbones, around your eyes, or across your forehead, but without the thick nasal discharge or fever that would point to an actual infection.

Some people feel the pain stretch from the front of the head to the back, staying on one side. Others experience it more diffusely, like a band of tightness. The intensity varies widely. A mild episode might feel like a dull heaviness you can push through, while a severe one can be disabling enough to send you to a dark room.

Symptoms Beyond the Headache

What often catches people off guard is that a barometric pressure headache doesn’t just hurt. It comes with a cluster of symptoms that overlap with both migraines and sinus problems, which is why it’s so frequently misidentified as one or the other.

Common accompanying symptoms include:

  • Facial discomfort or pain concentrated around the sinuses
  • Postnasal drip, a sensation of mucus draining down the back of your throat
  • Watery, teary eyes
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound

For people prone to migraines with aura, a pressure shift can also trigger visual disturbances like flickering lights, blind spots, or tingling sensations before the pain starts. Not everyone gets these, but if you already experience aura with your migraines, weather changes can set off the same pattern.

Why Pressure Changes Cause Pain

Your sinuses are air-filled cavities surrounded by bone. Under normal conditions, small openings connect them to your nasal passages, allowing air to flow in and out freely so the pressure inside your sinuses matches the pressure outside. When barometric pressure drops, as it does before a storm or during certain weather fronts, the air outside your body becomes less dense. The gas inside your sinuses expands slightly against the rigid bony walls. In healthy sinuses, those small openings equalize the difference quickly. But if your sinus openings are narrowed by even mild inflammation, swelling, or allergies, the pressure can’t equalize fast enough, and the result is pain.

There’s also a vascular component. Research in animal models has shown that falling barometric pressure increases blood flow to the brain. For people with sensitive nervous systems, particularly those prone to migraines, that increase in cerebral blood flow can activate pain receptors and trigger a full headache episode. This is why barometric pressure headaches so often feel and behave like migraines: the underlying mechanism overlaps significantly.

When Symptoms Start

The timing varies from person to person, and research confirms this is one of the trickiest aspects of pressure headaches. Some people develop symptoms on the same day the pressure drops. Others feel the headache building four to 24 hours before a weather front arrives, which is why some people insist they can “feel a storm coming.” A few studies have tracked effects beginning up to two days before a pressure change and lingering up to two days after.

Interestingly, research has not found a clear link between barometric pressure changes and how long the headache lasts once it starts. The pressure shift appears to act as a trigger rather than something that sustains the pain. Once the headache is underway, its duration depends more on your individual physiology and how you manage it than on what the barometer is doing.

How It Differs From a Sinus or Tension Headache

The sinus-like symptoms of a barometric pressure headache, including facial pressure, postnasal drip, and teary eyes, lead many people to assume they have a sinus infection. The key difference is that a true sinus infection produces thick, discolored nasal discharge and often comes with a fever. A pressure headache gives you the congestion feeling without the infection.

Compared to a tension headache, which typically feels like steady tightness wrapping around the head, a barometric pressure headache is more likely to throb, concentrate on one side, and bring nausea or light sensitivity along with it. If your headache consistently lines up with weather changes and includes those migraine-like features, pressure is the more likely culprit than muscle tension.

What Helps Reduce the Pain

Because you can’t control the weather, managing barometric pressure headaches comes down to reducing your sensitivity to pressure shifts and catching symptoms early. Tracking weather patterns alongside your headache episodes for a few weeks can help you confirm the connection and anticipate bad days.

Pressure-equalizing earplugs are one option some people find helpful. These contain a small vent that allows air to pass through gradually, helping balance the pressure between your inner ear and the environment. They won’t eliminate a headache, but they may reduce the pressure buildup sensation that contributes to one.

Magnesium is one of the better-studied nutrients for migraine prevention, and since barometric pressure headaches share so much biology with migraines, it’s relevant here too. A daily intake of 400 to 500 milligrams of magnesium oxide is a commonly recommended preventive dose. You can also increase magnesium through food: dark leafy greens like spinach and chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans, avocado, and dark chocolate are all rich sources. Be aware that magnesium supplements can cause digestive side effects like cramping and diarrhea, and they interact with certain medications including diuretics, heart medications, and some antibiotics.

Staying well hydrated matters more on pressure-change days, since dehydration lowers your threshold for headaches of all types. If you know a front is moving in, preemptive hydration and getting enough sleep the night before can make the difference between a manageable day and a miserable one.
