What Does a Bee Bite Look Like: Signs and Reactions

A bee sting (bees sting rather than bite) typically looks like a raised, red welt with a small puncture mark at the center. In the case of a honeybee, you may also see the stinger still embedded in your skin, appearing as a tiny dark splinter with a small sac attached to it. The area around the puncture swells quickly, turns red, and feels warm to the touch.

Why It’s a Sting, Not a Bite

Bees don’t actually bite people. They sting by jabbing a barbed stinger into the skin, injecting venom that causes pain and swelling. When people search for a “bee bite,” they’re almost always looking at a sting. The distinction matters because the stinger itself is often the key visual clue that tells you a bee was responsible.

Honeybees are the only common stinging insects that leave their stinger behind. Barbs on the stinger make it impossible for the bee to pull it back out, so it tears away from the bee’s body and stays lodged in your skin. If you look closely, you can see a tiny dark point at the center of the welt. The small clump sitting on top of it is the venom sac, which continues pumping venom for up to a minute after the sting. Wasps, hornets, and bumble bees can sting multiple times because they keep their stingers.

What a Mild Sting Looks Like

Most bee stings cause a minor reaction. You’ll feel an instant, sharp burning pain that fades within seconds, followed by a raised welt at the sting site. The skin around the puncture turns red and swollen, typically forming a bump roughly the size of a nickel to a quarter. It may itch. For most people, this swelling peaks within a few hours, then gradually shrinks over the next day or two.

Moderate and Large Local Reactions

Some people develop a stronger response. The redness and swelling worsen over the first 24 to 48 hours instead of fading. The skin may feel hot, look flushed, and itch intensely. In what’s called a large local reaction, swelling can expand to 8 to 10 inches in diameter, far beyond the sting site. A sting on your hand, for example, might cause your entire forearm to puff up. This looks alarming, but it’s still a localized response to the venom, not a full-body allergic reaction. Large local reactions typically resolve within two to seven days.

Signs of a Serious Allergic Reaction

A small percentage of people experience a systemic allergic reaction, which affects areas of the body far from the sting site. The warning signs go well beyond what the skin at the sting looks like. Watch for hives or red, blotchy patches spreading across skin that wasn’t stung. Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat is a red flag, as is difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, or a rapid drop in blood pressure. These symptoms can develop within minutes and require emergency treatment.

If you’ve been stung before without a serious reaction, that doesn’t guarantee future stings will be mild. Allergic responses can develop after repeated exposures.

How to Tell It Apart From Other Bites

If you didn’t see what got you, the mark on your skin can help narrow it down. A bee sting has a single, clearly defined puncture point at the center of one raised welt. Here’s how that compares to other common culprits:

  • Wasp or hornet sting: Looks very similar to a bee sting, with a red, swollen mark and a small puncture point. The key difference is you won’t find a stinger left in the skin.
  • Spider bite: Can leave small puncture marks and cause redness and swelling, but you’ll often see two tiny puncture points close together rather than one.
  • Mosquito or gnat bite: Produces a small, itchy lump, but it lacks the sharp central puncture and the immediate burning pain of a sting.
  • Flea bites: Appear as small red spots, often clustered in groups or lines, usually on the lower legs. They’re much smaller than a bee sting welt.
  • Tick bite: Leaves a red lump, sometimes with a distinctive bullseye pattern (a ring of darker skin around a pale center) if the tick carries Lyme disease.
  • Bedbug bites: Red lumps that aren’t usually painful, often appearing in rows on skin exposed during sleep.

The hallmark of a bee sting is the combination of immediate sharp pain, a single raised welt, and, if it was a honeybee, a visible stinger.

Remove the Stinger Quickly

If you can see a stinger, get it out as fast as possible. The venom sac keeps pumping after the bee is gone, so every second counts. You can scrape it out sideways with a fingernail, credit card edge, or similar flat object. Pulling it out with tweezers or your fingers also works. There’s a longstanding belief that pinching the stinger squeezes more venom in, but research has cast doubt on that idea. Speed matters more than technique.

Removing the stinger quickly reduces the total amount of venom delivered, which directly affects how large and painful the welt becomes. A sting where the stinger sits for 30 seconds will generally look worse than one where you flicked it out immediately.

What About Sweat Bees?

Sweat bees are small, often metallic-green bees attracted to human perspiration. Despite their habit of landing on sweaty skin, they don’t bite to collect salt. They gently lap it up. They’re capable of stinging but rarely do, and their stings are mild compared to a honeybee’s. If a tiny bee landed on you and you felt a slight pinch, it was likely a defensive sting from being pressed against your skin, not a bite.

Normal Healing vs. Infection

A normal bee sting follows a predictable pattern: sharp pain fading within minutes, peak swelling within several hours, and gradual improvement over one to three days. Some redness and itching lingering for a few days is expected.

An infection looks different. If the redness keeps expanding after 48 hours, the area becomes increasingly warm and tender, you see red streaks radiating outward from the sting site, or pus begins to drain from the puncture, that’s no longer a normal venom reaction. Fever developing days after a sting is another sign that bacteria may have entered through the puncture wound. Scratching the sting site is the most common way infections start, since it breaks the skin further and introduces bacteria.
