What Does a Cat Heart Look Like Inside?

A cat’s heart is a small, muscular organ roughly the size of a walnut, with a noticeably slender, elongated shape compared to the rounder hearts you see in dogs or humans. It sits in the chest cavity between the lungs, tilted at a more horizontal angle than a dog’s heart, and this horizontal orientation becomes even more pronounced as a cat ages. Despite its small size, it shares the same basic four-chamber design found in all mammals.

Shape, Size, and Position

The feline heart is compact and tapered, coming to a distinct point at the bottom (the apex) while the broader top (the base) connects to the major blood vessels. On a chest X-ray, a healthy cat’s heart looks like a narrow oval or an egg tilted on its side, which is strikingly different from the broader, more upright silhouette of a dog’s heart. Veterinarians measure heart size on X-rays using something called a vertebral heart scale, which compares the heart’s length and width to the spine. In a healthy cat, that measurement typically falls around 7.3 vertebrae on a side view, with a normal range of about 6.3 to 8.5. Anything significantly above that range raises concern about enlargement.

The heart sits roughly between the third and sixth ribs, cradled in a thin, fluid-lined sac called the pericardium. Its surface is a deep reddish-brown muscle covered by a thin, glistening membrane. Thin streaks of pale fat often line the grooves where the coronary arteries run along the outside, supplying blood to the heart muscle itself.

The Four Chambers Inside

Cut a cat’s heart open and you’ll find four distinct chambers, just like in a human heart. The two upper chambers are the right atrium and left atrium, which receive incoming blood. The two lower chambers are the right ventricle and left ventricle, which pump blood out. The left ventricle does the heaviest lifting, pushing oxygenated blood to the entire body, so its muscular wall is noticeably thicker than the right ventricle’s wall.

Each atrium has a small, ear-shaped flap called an auricle that extends from it, increasing the chamber’s capacity. These auricles are visible on the outside of the heart and give the top of the organ a slightly irregular, bumpy profile rather than a smooth dome.

Valves That Control Blood Flow

Four valves inside the heart act as one-way doors, keeping blood moving in the right direction. On the right side, the tricuspid valve sits between the atrium and ventricle, and the pulmonary valve guards the exit into the lungs. On the left side, the mitral valve (sometimes called the bicuspid valve) separates the atrium from the ventricle, and the aortic valve controls flow into the aorta, the body’s largest artery.

These valves are made of thin, pale flaps of tissue anchored by tiny cord-like structures that look almost like the strings of a parachute. When a vet listens to your cat’s chest with a stethoscope, the familiar “lub-dub” sound comes from these valves snapping shut in sequence. A healthy resting cat heart beats at about 120 to 140 beats per minute, roughly twice as fast as a typical human heart.

How a Cat’s Heart Compares to a Human’s

Structurally, a cat’s heart and a human heart are remarkably similar. Both have four chambers, four valves, and the same basic circulatory plumbing. The differences are mostly about scale and proportion. A human heart weighs around 250 to 350 grams. A cat’s heart weighs a small fraction of that, proportional to its much smaller body. The overall silhouette is also narrower and more elongated in cats, whereas the human heart is broader and sits more upright in the chest.

Compared to a dog’s heart, the cat’s version is more slender and sits at that characteristic horizontal tilt. Dogs tend to have a more upright, egg-shaped heart on X-ray. These proportional differences matter to veterinarians reading chest films, because applying dog-sized expectations to a cat would make a perfectly normal heart look abnormally small.

What a Diseased Cat Heart Looks Like

The most common heart disease in cats is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, which changes the heart’s appearance in ways a vet can see on ultrasound. In a cat with HCM, the muscular walls of the left ventricle grow abnormally thick. This thickening shrinks the interior space of the chamber, meaning less blood fills it with each beat. On an echocardiogram, a healthy left ventricle looks like a spacious, rhythmically contracting oval. In HCM, it appears cramped, with walls that are visibly bulkier and stiffer.

From the outside, a heart with advanced HCM may look enlarged overall, and an X-ray might show a cardiac silhouette that pushes well beyond the normal vertebral heart scale range. The thickened walls also make the heart less elastic, so it struggles to relax and fill properly between beats. Over time, this can lead to fluid backing up into the lungs or blood clots forming inside the sluggish chambers. HCM is one reason veterinarians pay close attention to heart shape and size during routine exams, since catching the thickening early can make a real difference in how well a cat does long term.
