What Does a High Resting Heart Rate Mean: Causes & Risks

A resting heart rate consistently above 100 beats per minute is considered high and is clinically known as tachycardia. A normal adult resting heart rate falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute. While a temporarily elevated rate is a normal response to stress, caffeine, or exercise, a persistently high resting rate can signal an underlying health issue and is linked to increased cardiovascular risk over time.

What Counts as “High”

The 100 bpm threshold is the standard cutoff used by cardiologists, but context matters. A resting heart rate in the upper 80s or 90s isn’t technically tachycardia, yet it’s still higher than what’s typical for healthy adults. Well-conditioned athletes often have resting rates in the 40s or 50s because their hearts pump more blood per beat. If your rate has crept upward over weeks or months, that trend matters even if you haven’t crossed the 100 bpm line.

It’s also worth noting that a single high reading doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem. Caffeine, dehydration, a poor night of sleep, or even measuring right after standing up can all inflate the number. What matters is your rate when you’re truly at rest, ideally sitting quietly for at least five minutes before checking.

Why Your Resting Heart Rate Rises

Your heart rate is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which has two competing branches. The sympathetic branch speeds things up (the “fight or flight” response), while the parasympathetic branch slows things down. A high resting rate usually means the accelerating side is winning, either because it’s being overstimulated or because the calming side isn’t doing its job well enough.

When the sympathetic system fires, nerve fibers running from the spinal cord release signaling chemicals onto the heart’s surface. These chemicals increase the flow of calcium into heart cells, making them contract faster and more forcefully. In short bursts, this is completely normal. When it stays elevated at rest, something is driving the imbalance.

Common Causes

  • Thyroid overactivity. An overactive thyroid is one of the most well-established medical causes. Excess thyroid hormone directly increases resting heart rate, heart contractility, and blood volume. Cardiac output in people with hyperthyroidism can run 50% to 300% higher than normal. If your high heart rate comes with unexplained weight loss, heat intolerance, or tremor, thyroid function is one of the first things to check.
  • Anemia or low blood volume. When your blood carries less oxygen (from iron deficiency, blood loss, or dehydration), the heart compensates by beating faster to deliver the same amount of oxygen to your tissues.
  • Anxiety and chronic stress. Persistent activation of the stress response keeps your sympathetic nervous system in overdrive, even when you’re sitting still.
  • Medications and substances. Caffeine, nicotine, decongestants, and some asthma medications can all raise resting heart rate. So can withdrawal from certain substances.
  • Fever and infection. Heart rate typically rises about 10 bpm for every degree (Fahrenheit) of fever as your body works harder to fight off illness.
  • Poor cardiovascular fitness. A deconditioned heart pumps less blood per beat and has to beat more frequently to meet the body’s needs.

Post-Viral Tachycardia

One cause that has received growing attention is a persistently elevated heart rate after viral infections, particularly COVID-19. The American Heart Association has recognized that COVID-19 can disrupt the autonomic nervous system, leading to conditions like inappropriate sinus tachycardia (a resting rate above 90 bpm without an obvious trigger) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, where heart rate spikes upon standing.

The numbers are striking. In the year following infection, COVID-19 survivors had an 84% higher risk of developing sinus tachycardia compared to uninfected individuals. Overall arrhythmic risk was 69% higher. These elevations persisted well beyond the acute illness, starting at 30 days after infection and continuing through the follow-up period. If your resting heart rate jumped after a viral illness and hasn’t come back down after several weeks, that pattern is recognized and worth discussing with a clinician.

Long-Term Risks of a High Resting Rate

A consistently elevated resting heart rate isn’t just a symptom. It appears to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The Rotterdam Study followed thousands of healthy adults for a median of 14.6 years and found that men with higher resting heart rates had a significantly greater risk of developing heart failure. For every increase of 10 beats per minute, the risk of heart failure rose by 13% to 18%. Men in the highest third of resting heart rates had a 47% higher risk compared to those in the lowest third.

Interestingly, this association was statistically significant only in men in the study. The researchers found a significant interaction by sex, meaning the relationship between heart rate and heart failure risk played out differently in women. The reasons for this difference aren’t fully understood.

The mechanism likely involves wear and tear. A heart that beats faster at rest works harder around the clock. Over years, that extra workload can lead to changes in heart structure, reduced efficiency, and eventually, the inability to pump blood effectively.

How to Get an Accurate Reading

Before worrying about your number, make sure you’re measuring it correctly. Many people check their heart rate under conditions that inflate it, then assume something is wrong.

For the most accurate resting measurement, sit or lie down quietly for at least five minutes beforehand. Avoid caffeine, exercise, and stressful conversations in the 30 minutes prior. First thing in the morning, before getting out of bed, is often the most reliable time. Place two fingers on the inside of your wrist just below the thumb, count the beats for 30 seconds, and multiply by two. Alternatively, a pulse oximeter or a modern smartwatch can give you a continuous overnight average, which smooths out the natural fluctuations.

Check your rate on several different days rather than relying on a single measurement. A pattern of consistently high readings is far more meaningful than one elevated number after a stressful afternoon.

What You Can Do About It

If your resting heart rate is persistently in the high range but you have no underlying medical condition, aerobic exercise is the single most effective way to bring it down. Regular cardiovascular training strengthens the heart muscle so it pumps more blood per beat, requiring fewer beats per minute to meet your body’s needs. Even moderate activity, like brisk walking for 30 minutes most days, can lower resting heart rate by several beats per minute over weeks to months.

Other practical steps include cutting back on caffeine, managing stress through techniques like slow breathing or meditation (which directly activate the parasympathetic nervous system), staying well-hydrated, and getting enough sleep. Poor sleep is an underappreciated driver of elevated heart rate because it keeps the sympathetic nervous system in a heightened state.

If your resting heart rate is regularly above 100 bpm, or if it’s accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, or fainting, that warrants prompt medical evaluation. These symptoms combined with a rapid heart rate can indicate a more serious arrhythmia or an underlying condition that needs treatment rather than lifestyle changes alone.
