Academic research internships are a different story. Many university positions offer stipends rather than hourly wages, and some are unpaid, particularly when tied to course credit. Under federal labor law, unpaid internships at for-profit companies must pass what’s called the “primary beneficiary test,” a seven-factor analysis that looks at whether the internship primarily benefits the student rather than the employer.
