A sun rash typically appears as clusters of small red bumps, raised patches, or hives on skin that was exposed to sunlight. The exact look varies depending on which type of sun-related reaction you’re dealing with, but itching, redness, and inflammation are common across all of them. Here’s how to identify what you’re seeing on your skin.
The Most Common Sun Rash: PMLE
Polymorphous light eruption, or PMLE, is the most frequent type of sun rash. The name literally means “many forms,” because it can look quite different from one person to the next. The hallmark is dense clusters of small bumps and blisters, often packed tightly together on inflamed, raised patches of skin. These patches are rough to the touch and usually itch or burn.
What makes PMLE easy to recognize is where it shows up. The rash targets areas that were covered all winter and then suddenly exposed to sun: the upper chest, the front of the neck, and the arms. Your face and hands, which get year-round sun exposure, are usually spared. This pattern is a strong clue. PMLE most commonly appears in spring or early summer, when your skin hasn’t yet adapted to stronger UV light, and it tends to improve as the season goes on and your skin builds some tolerance.
Solar Urticaria: Hives From Sunlight
Solar urticaria looks distinctly different from PMLE. Instead of clusters of tiny bumps, it produces classic hives: large, raised, red welts on the skin. These welts are intensely itchy and appear on any uncovered skin within minutes of sun exposure. That rapid onset is the key distinguishing feature. While PMLE can take hours to develop after a day in the sun, solar urticaria is almost immediate. The hives typically fade once you move out of sunlight, though they can linger for a few hours afterward.
Drug-Related Sun Rashes
Certain medications and topical products can make your skin react abnormally to sunlight, producing two distinct types of rash. These are worth knowing about because they look different from each other and from other sun rashes.
A phototoxic reaction resembles a severe, exaggerated sunburn. The skin becomes red, inflamed, and painful, and it can later develop brown or blue-gray discoloration. This reaction stays strictly within the boundaries of sun-exposed skin, like a sunburn that’s worse than it should be for the amount of time you spent outside. Common culprits include certain antibiotics, diuretics, and anti-inflammatory medications.
A photoallergic reaction looks more like an allergic skin reaction: red, scaly, itchy patches that sometimes develop blisters or hive-like spots. The critical difference is that a photoallergic rash can spread beyond the sun-exposed areas to skin that was fully covered. If your rash has crept under your clothing, that’s a strong signal you’re dealing with a photoallergic reaction rather than simple sun sensitivity.
Less Common Types
Actinic prurigo is a rarer sun-triggered condition that produces small, inflamed red bumps (papules), thickened plaques, and nodules. Because it’s intensely itchy, the skin often shows signs of heavy scratching: open sores, weeping, crusting, and scaling. Between 60% and 70% of people with this condition develop these chronic scratch-related skin changes. It tends to run in families and often begins in childhood.
Chronic actinic dermatitis develops in people with long-standing sun sensitivity. The skin becomes red, inflamed, and noticeably thickened and hardened over time, with visible scaling. It looks less like an acute rash and more like chronically irritated, leathery skin, particularly on the face, neck, and backs of the hands.
How Sun Rash Looks on Darker Skin
Most descriptions of sun rash focus on how it appears on lighter skin, but the visual signs can be quite different on medium to dark skin tones. Redness is less visible, so the inflammation may appear as dark brown, grayish, or purple patches instead of the bright red that’s typically described. Sun damage can also show up as uneven skin tone or dark spots rather than the classic rash pattern. Because these presentations are subtler, sun rashes on darker skin are sometimes missed or mistaken for other conditions.
Sun Rash vs. Heat Rash
These two get confused constantly because they both appear in summer and involve red, bumpy skin. But they have different causes and show up in different places. A sun rash is triggered by UV light and appears on exposed skin like the chest, arms, and neck. A heat rash is triggered by sweat and friction, producing small, itchy, fluid-filled bumps around hair follicles. It shows up in areas where skin folds or clothing traps moisture: the underarms, groin, and back. Heat rash can develop on skin that never saw sunlight at all, which is the simplest way to tell them apart. If the bumps are in your armpits or along your waistband, you’re almost certainly looking at heat rash, not a sun reaction.
What to Watch For
A straightforward case of PMLE will generally resolve on its own once you stay out of the sun, though it can take several days to fully clear. Solar urticaria fades faster, often within hours of getting out of sunlight. If your rash is spreading to areas that weren’t exposed to the sun, involves blistering or open sores, or keeps recurring every time you go outside, it’s worth getting evaluated. A dermatologist can distinguish between the different types, check whether a medication might be involved, and recommend targeted treatment beyond basic sun avoidance.
