AAC stands for several things depending on the context. The two most common meanings are Augmentative and Alternative Communication (in speech therapy and disability services) and Advanced Audio Coding (in digital audio and technology). It also stands for Autoclaved Aerated Concrete in construction. Here’s what each one means and why it matters.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication
In healthcare and education, AAC refers to augmentative and alternative communication, a broad set of tools and strategies that help people communicate when speech alone isn’t enough. “Augmentative” means supplementing existing speech, while “alternative” means replacing it entirely. AAC can be temporary, like after a surgery that affects the voice, or permanent, like for someone living with a progressive neurological condition.
An estimated 5 million Americans and 97 million people worldwide could benefit from AAC. The conditions that create a need for it include autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, stroke, head injury, hearing impairment, ALS, and various genetic syndromes. Among U.S. students who need communication support, about 18% use some form of AAC in school.
Low-Tech and High-Tech Options
AAC ranges from simple to sophisticated. Low-tech options include gestures, facial expressions, drawing, writing, pointing to letters to spell words, and pointing to photos or printed words on a board. These require no batteries, no software, and no training beyond learning the system itself.
High-tech options include tablet apps (often on an iPad) that let a user tap symbols or type words, which the device then speaks aloud. These speech-generating devices can be customized with thousands of words and phrases, and some use eye-tracking technology so that people with very limited movement can still select what they want to say.
AAC Does Not Hold Back Speech Development
One of the biggest concerns parents and caregivers have is whether using AAC will discourage a child from learning to talk. Research strongly suggests the opposite. A review of 27 cases found that none showed a decrease in speech production after starting AAC. In fact, 89% of individuals demonstrated gains in speech. Most of those gains appeared quickly, within the first five sessions of using the new system. The positive effects held across a wide age range, from children as young as 2 to adults up to 60. AAC gives people a reliable way to communicate, and that experience with language often supports, rather than replaces, spoken words.
Advanced Audio Coding
In technology, AAC stands for Advanced Audio Coding, a digital audio format designed to compress music and speech into smaller files while preserving sound quality. It was developed as part of the MPEG-2 and later MPEG-4 standards, and it’s now one of the most widely used audio formats in the world. Apple Music uses AAC as its default codec, Apple’s AirPods and most Beats wireless headphones transmit audio over Bluetooth using AAC, and YouTube encodes audio in AAC as well.
How AAC Compares to MP3
AAC was designed as an improvement over MP3, and at the same file size, it generally sounds better. It uses more advanced algorithms to decide which audio data to keep and which to discard during compression. The result is noticeably cleaner sound at lower bit rates, which is exactly why streaming services and mobile platforms prefer it.
AAC handles sudden, sharp sounds (called transient signals) more accurately than MP3, which makes vocals sound crisper and more natural. This is especially relevant for podcasts and audiobooks. AAC also supports up to 48 audio channels compared to MP3’s limit of 5.1, giving it far more flexibility for surround sound and spatial audio. At comparable quality levels, AAC files tend to be slightly smaller than MP3 files, a practical advantage when you’re storing thousands of songs or streaming over a cellular connection.
Autoclaved Aerated Concrete
In the construction and building industry, AAC stands for autoclaved aerated concrete. This is a lightweight building material made by introducing air pockets into concrete during manufacturing, then curing it under high pressure and steam (the “autoclaving” process). The finished product is light-colored and visibly porous, with tiny bubbles throughout.
AAC weighs about one-fifth as much as standard concrete but retains half the bearing strength, making it far easier to transport and work with while still supporting significant structural loads. It comes as blocks or reinforced panels and is valued for several practical reasons: it’s an excellent insulator for both heat and sound, it’s completely fireproof (achieving fire ratings up to four hours depending on thickness), and it doesn’t attract insects or pests. The trapped air pockets also make it breathable, and the finished material contains no toxic substances or odor. Construction with AAC produces little waste because offcuts can be reused in wall assembly.
Other Meanings
AAC occasionally appears in other specialized fields. In pharmacy and Medicaid billing, it stands for actual acquisition cost, referring to the real price a pharmacy pays for a medication. This meaning is mostly limited to insurance and government healthcare reimbursement discussions and rarely comes up outside those industries.
