An adrenaline dump feels like your body has suddenly shifted into emergency mode, even if nothing around you has physically changed. Your heart pounds hard enough to feel it in your chest and throat, your hands shake, your skin goes pale or flushed, and you may feel a strange mix of hyperalertness and tunnel vision. The whole experience can peak within seconds and linger for up to an hour.

What Happens Inside Your Body

The process starts in your brain’s emotional processing center. When it detects a threat, whether real or perceived, it fires a distress signal to the hypothalamus, which acts as a command center. The hypothalamus activates your sympathetic nervous system, sending signals through your nerves to the adrenal glands sitting on top of your kidneys. Those glands respond by pumping adrenaline (epinephrine) into your bloodstream.

From there, adrenaline reshapes how your body operates in a matter of seconds. Your heart beats faster to push more blood to your muscles and brain. Your blood pressure climbs. Your airways open wider so you can take in more oxygen. Stored sugar and fat get released into your bloodstream for quick energy. Your pupils dilate to let in more light. But the effects don’t disappear the moment the trigger passes. Trembling, a fast heartbeat, pale skin, and jitteriness commonly persist for around 20 minutes after the surge.

Depending on how intense the trigger was, residual effects can last up to an hour. During this window, you might feel wired but exhausted at the same time, a state sometimes called an “adrenaline crash.” Once the adrenaline clears, many people feel drained, heavy, emotionally flat, or unusually sleepy.
