If the clinic does ear impressions for custom hearing aids or earmolds, you’ll often prepare the materials the audiologist needs.
Hearing Aid Support and Troubleshooting
A large portion of the job revolves around hearing aids and other amplification devices. Audiology assistants clean devices, check that they’re functioning properly, and perform electroacoustic analysis, which measures whether a hearing aid is producing sound at the right levels. When a device isn’t working correctly, you’ll troubleshoot common issues: cleaning the microphone and receiver ports, replacing tubing or domes, checking batteries, and handling minor repairs in the office.
If a repair is beyond what can be done on-site, you’ll package the device and send it to the manufacturer. The same goes for earmold orders and lab returns. You’ll also teach patients how to insert and remove their hearing aids, swap batteries, clean the devices at home, and practice proper ear hygiene. For patients who use alerting systems or assistive listening devices (like amplified phones or TV streamers), you may demonstrate how those work too.
Administrative and Behind-the-Scenes Work
Audiology assistants keep the clinic running smoothly. You’ll schedule appointments, maintain inventories of supplies, restock testing rooms, and perform infection control duties like disinfecting equipment between patients. Equipment maintenance is another regular task. Audiometers and tympanometers need daily biological checks, which are quick listening tests to confirm the machine is calibrated and producing accurate results. These checks are simple but essential for reliable patient data.
What Audiology Assistants Cannot Do
The role has clear boundaries. You cannot evaluate patients, interpret test results, or diagnose hearing conditions. Even if you’re the one running a screening, the audiologist is responsible for determining what the results mean and deciding the next step. Independently adjusting hearing aid programming or settings is off-limits.
