Bad vision doesn’t look one single way. It can mean blurry objects in the distance, a hazy film over everything, blind spots in the center of your view, or lights that streak and starburst at night. The specific pattern depends on what’s causing the problem, and each condition creates a distinct visual experience. Here’s what the most common types of vision problems actually look like from the inside.
Blurry Vision From Refractive Errors
The most common form of “bad vision” is a refractive error, where the shape of your eye doesn’t bend light correctly onto the retina. There are three main types, and each blurs your world differently.
Nearsightedness (myopia) makes distant objects look soft and out of focus while things up close stay sharp. A street sign that someone with normal vision reads easily from a block away looks like a smudged blur to you. The farther away something is, the worse it gets. You might squint constantly, which temporarily sharpens the image by narrowing the light entering your eye.
Farsightedness (hyperopia) is the opposite. Distant objects may look fine, but close-up work like reading a book or looking at your phone feels strained and blurry. It often comes with headaches, eye fatigue, and a general sense that your eyes are working too hard.
Astigmatism distorts vision at all distances because the front surface of the eye is curved unevenly, like a football instead of a basketball. Text can look slightly smeared or doubled. But the most dramatic effect happens at night: streetlights and headlights develop halos, starbursts, or streaky rays that spread outward. Driving after dark can feel like looking through smudged goggles. Dry eyes make it worse, because a rough tear film scatters light even further.
What Different Levels of Acuity Mean
Visual acuity is measured with that familiar “20/something” number. If you have 20/40 vision, you need to stand 20 feet from something that a person with normal sight could read at 40 feet. At 20/200, that gap becomes enormous, and in the United States, 20/200 that can’t be corrected with glasses or contacts is the threshold for legal blindness.
The practical impact of acuity loss depends heavily on the task. Reading is one of the first activities to suffer. Vision worse than about 20/30 can start making small print difficult, while getting around independently, walking, and navigating spaces typically stays manageable until acuity drops below 20/200. One important nuance: the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Some people with 20/40 acuity struggle significantly with daily life, while others at 20/200 manage well depending on their contrast sensitivity and how much peripheral vision they retain.
Cloudy, Yellowed, or Hazy Vision
Cataracts create a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, and the visual effect is like looking through a fogged-up window. Colors gradually fade or shift toward yellow and brown. You need brighter light to read. Glare from headlights or sunlight becomes uncomfortable or even blinding. Some people see halos around lights or experience double vision in a single eye, where one object produces two overlapping images. The change is slow enough that many people don’t realize how much color and clarity they’ve lost until after surgery restores it.
Dark Spots and Wavy Lines in Central Vision
Age-related macular degeneration attacks the center of your visual field while leaving peripheral vision intact. Early on, straight lines start to look wavy or bent, like looking at a door frame through rippling water. As it progresses, a dark or blurry spot develops right in the middle of whatever you’re looking at. You can see the room around you, but the face you’re trying to focus on, the word you’re trying to read, or the clock you’re trying to check has a smudge or blank patch right over it. Objects may also appear distorted in shape or size.
Losing Your Side Vision
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and gradually erodes peripheral vision. What makes it especially dangerous is that the early stages have almost no noticeable symptoms. The loss begins as patchy blind spots in your side vision that your brain fills in, so you don’t notice them. Over months or years, the remaining visual field narrows. In advanced stages, it becomes what people call “tunnel vision,” where you can see what’s directly in front of you but the world around it goes dark. Eventually, even central vision deteriorates. Because the damage is irreversible and the progression so gradual, many people don’t realize anything is wrong until significant vision has already been lost.
Trouble Seeing in the Dark
Night blindness isn’t total blindness at night. It’s a reduced ability to see in dim light or to adjust when lighting changes suddenly. Walking from a bright lobby into a dark theater takes your eyes much longer to adapt than normal, and once they do, the scene still looks darker, blurrier, and harder to focus on than what other people see. Driving at twilight becomes particularly tricky because your eyes struggle to handle the contrast between the darkening landscape and the brighter sky. Headlights from oncoming cars can temporarily wash out your vision.
Colors That Look the Same
Color vision deficiency changes which colors you can distinguish from each other. The two most common types, protanopia and deuteranopia, both affect the red-green spectrum. People with either type genuinely cannot tell red from green. A red traffic light and a green one may look like similar shades of brownish-yellow. Ripe and unripe fruit can look identical.
A rarer type, tritanopia, scrambles the blue-yellow axis instead. Blue and green become hard to separate, purple and red look alike, and yellow and pink blend together. Colors also appear less vivid overall, as if someone turned the saturation down on the whole world. Most people with color deficiency are born with it and don’t realize their perception is different until they’re tested or someone points out a color they can’t see.
Double Vision
Seeing two of everything comes in two forms. Binocular double vision happens when both eyes are open and your eyes aren’t aiming at the same point. Close or cover one eye and it goes away. Monocular double vision persists even with one eye closed, and it typically looks less like two complete images and more like a shadow or ghost layered over the real one. Monocular double vision usually points to a problem within the eye itself, like a cataract or corneal irregularity, while binocular double vision involves the muscles or nerves that control eye alignment.
Floaters, Flashes, and Warning Signs
Almost everyone sees floaters at some point: small specks, threads, or cobweb-like shapes that drift lazily across your vision, especially noticeable against a bright sky or white wall. These are caused by tiny clumps of gel inside the eye. As you age, the gel-like substance in the back of the eye liquefies and breaks into smaller pieces that cast shadows on your retina. A few occasional floaters are normal and harmless.
What’s not normal is a sudden shower of new floaters, flashes of light like a camera going off in the corner of your eye, or a dark shadow creeping across your vision like a curtain being pulled. These are the hallmark symptoms of a retinal detachment, where the light-sensitive lining at the back of the eye starts peeling away. A retinal detachment also causes blurred vision and worsening peripheral vision. This is a medical emergency. The difference between a few lazy floaters and a retinal detachment is speed and volume: gradual and few versus sudden and many.
