What Does Baking Soda Do to Your Teeth and Enamel?

Baking soda does several things to your teeth: it neutralizes the acids that cause cavities, scrubs away surface stains, and reduces the bacteria responsible for plaque and gum disease. It’s one of the most studied ingredients in dental care, and the evidence is largely positive. But it works differently than many people assume, and it has real limitations.

How It Fights Cavities

Your mouth becomes acidic every time you eat or drink something sugary. Bacteria in the sticky film on your teeth (dental plaque) feed on that sugar and produce acid as a byproduct. When the pH in that film drops below about 5.5, your tooth enamel starts dissolving. This process, called demineralization, is the first step toward a cavity.

Baking soda is highly soluble, which allows it to penetrate plaque quickly and neutralize those acids. Research published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that it can shift an acidic plaque environment to alkaline levels rapidly. That matters because the faster acid gets neutralized, the less time your enamel spends dissolving. In fact, timing is critical: the sooner baking soda reaches the plaque after you eat sugar, the more effective it is at preventing damage.

This pH shift also creates conditions that favor remineralization, the natural repair process where minerals from your saliva redeposit into weakened enamel. Baking soda doesn’t add minerals back to teeth the way fluoride does, but by keeping the environment less acidic, it gives your saliva a better chance to do that repair work on its own. Toothpastes that combine both baking soda and fluoride offer the strongest protection: the baking soda neutralizes acid while the fluoride actively strengthens enamel.

What It Does to Stains

Baking soda whitens teeth, but not the way bleaching products do. It works mechanically rather than chemically. Your teeth are coated in a thin organic film that picks up color from coffee, tea, red wine, and other deeply pigmented foods. Plain brushing with water can’t remove this film effectively. Baking soda’s mild abrasive particles polish it away, revealing the natural color underneath.

Clinical studies have found that baking soda dentifrices are more effective at removing surface stains than some non-baking-soda toothpastes that are actually more abrasive. This is a counterintuitive finding: baking soda particles are softer than most toothpaste abrasives, yet they outperform them at stain removal. The likely explanation is that baking soda dissolves during brushing, so its particles break down and polish rather than scratch.

The key distinction is that baking soda only removes extrinsic stains, the discoloration sitting on the tooth surface. It won’t change the internal color of your teeth. If your teeth are naturally yellow or gray, or if discoloration comes from inside the tooth (from medications, aging, or injury), you’d need a peroxide-based bleaching product for that.

Effects on Plaque and Bacteria

Baking soda has antimicrobial properties that go beyond simple scrubbing. Research suggests it significantly reduces levels of Streptococcus mutans, the bacterium most responsible for tooth decay. A 2017 review found that toothpastes containing baking soda were more effective at reducing overall plaque levels than traditional toothpastes without it.

The mechanism is partly chemical. Most cavity-causing bacteria thrive in acidic conditions. When baking soda raises the pH, it creates an environment that’s less hospitable to these harmful species while being more favorable to the beneficial bacteria that coexist in a healthy mouth. Over time, this can help prevent the shift in your oral bacteria population that leads to chronic decay.

Impact on Gum Health

The gum benefits are where the evidence gets especially interesting. Multiple clinical trials have tested baking soda toothpastes against standard fluoride toothpastes for gum inflammation and bleeding. The results consistently favor baking soda, though the strength of the effect depends on concentration.

In one single-blinded trial, a toothpaste with 67% sodium bicarbonate significantly reduced gum bleeding compared to a control toothpaste within just six weeks. Toothpastes with higher concentrations of baking soda (52% and 65%) showed even more dramatic results in a six-month study: approximately 50% reduction in plaque scores and 75% reduction in gum inflammation. A 2017 trial confirmed these findings, showing baking soda toothpaste outperformed a standard fluoride toothpaste at 12 weeks.

Not every formulation works equally well. When baking soda was combined with a peroxide formula in one study, it didn’t reduce plaque or gum inflammation. And when mixed into herbal toothpastes, the results trended positive but weren’t statistically significant. The concentration of baking soda and what it’s paired with both matter.

How It Changes Your Saliva

Baking soda also influences the chemistry of your saliva. In a controlled study, chewing gum containing sodium bicarbonate raised salivary pH to 8.06 (mildly alkaline), compared to 7.39 with standard gum. The flow rate of saliva was the same with both gums, meaning the pH boost came from the bicarbonate itself, not from increased saliva production.

Perhaps more impressive: after participants ate toffee (which drove the pH between teeth down to a highly acidic 4.3), chewing bicarbonate gum for 10 minutes brought it back up to 6.1. That’s a significant recovery from the danger zone. For people who snack frequently or have dry mouth, this buffering effect can be meaningful for cavity prevention throughout the day.

Is It Safe for Enamel?

The most common concern about baking soda is whether it’s too abrasive. Toothpaste abrasiveness is measured on a scale called Relative Dentin Abrasivity, or RDA. The FDA considers anything under 200 safe for daily use. Most commercial toothpastes fall between 70 and 150. Pure baking soda scores very low on this scale because its particles are soft and dissolve readily in water.

This means baking soda is gentler on enamel than the majority of commercial toothpastes. It’s a common misconception that the gritty texture means it’s harsh. The grittiness you feel is the crystalline structure of the powder, which breaks down quickly during brushing. That said, brushing too aggressively with anything, including baking soda, can still irritate gums and wear down enamel over time. The pressure you apply matters more than the product you use.

What Baking Soda Can’t Do

Baking soda is not a replacement for fluoride. While it creates conditions that favor remineralization, it doesn’t deposit fluoride into enamel, which is the most proven mechanism for strengthening teeth against decay. If you’re using plain baking soda instead of toothpaste, you’re missing that benefit entirely. A toothpaste that contains both baking soda and fluoride gives you acid neutralization and active enamel repair in one step.

It also can’t remove tartar. Once plaque hardens into calculus (the rough buildup you sometimes feel near your gumline), no amount of brushing with baking soda will dissolve it. That requires professional cleaning. And while baking soda reduces harmful bacteria, it doesn’t eliminate them. It’s a useful tool in oral care, not a standalone solution.
