What Does Being Drunk Feel Like? From Buzz to Blackout

Being drunk starts as a warm, loosened-up feeling and gradually shifts into something much less pleasant as you keep drinking. At low levels, alcohol creates a sense of relaxation and mild euphoria. At higher levels, it brings slurred speech, loss of balance, nausea, and eventually blackouts or worse. The experience changes dramatically depending on how much you drink, how fast, and your own body’s characteristics.

What Happens in Your Brain

Alcohol works by amplifying your brain’s main “slow down” chemical while suppressing its main “speed up” chemical. The result is a general dampening of brain activity, which is why you feel relaxed, less anxious, and less inhibited after a drink or two. Your brain also becomes less able to distinguish between threatening and non-threatening social cues, which is part of why people feel bolder and more socially comfortable while drinking.

At the same time, alcohol triggers a small release of feel-good chemicals in your brain’s reward system, producing that initial wave of euphoria. This is the “buzz” most people associate with drinking, and it peaks relatively early. As you continue drinking, the sedative effects increasingly overpower the pleasurable ones.

The First Drink to the Buzz

How quickly you feel that first drink depends on what you’re drinking. Spirits hit fastest, with blood alcohol peaking around 36 minutes after consumption. Wine takes closer to 54 minutes, and beer about an hour. Drinking on an empty stomach speeds all of these up considerably.

At a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of around 0.02%, you’ll notice a subtle mood shift. Colors might seem slightly brighter, conversation flows more easily, and you feel a gentle loosening of tension. By 0.05%, the feeling becomes more pronounced: lowered alertness, reduced inhibition, and a noticeable sense of not caring as much about things that would normally make you self-conscious. This is the range most people describe as a pleasant buzz.

The Tipping Point: Buzzed to Drunk

At 0.08%, the legal limit for driving in the United States, you cross into genuine impairment. Muscle coordination drops, reaction time slows, and your ability to judge danger weakens. Most people can feel this shift: movements require slightly more effort, and your thinking feels like it’s running through a filter. You might bump into things, misjudge distances, or struggle to follow a complicated conversation.

By 0.10%, speech starts to slur. Thinking slows noticeably. You might repeat yourself without realizing it or lose your train of thought mid-sentence. This is typically where the fun starts fading for most people, though the impaired judgment that comes with intoxication can make it hard to recognize that in the moment.

Physical Sensations as You Get Drunker

One of the earliest physical feelings is warmth. Alcohol dilates blood vessels near your skin, creating a flushing sensation that many people find pleasant initially. Your body may also feel heavier or slightly numb, especially in your fingertips and face.

Balance is one of the first physical systems to go. Alcohol directly affects the organs in your inner ear that help you stay upright, causing dizziness, unsteadiness, and that classic swaying walk. Simple tasks like standing on one foot or walking a straight line become genuinely difficult. Eye-hand coordination suffers too, which is why drunk people fumble with keys, knock over glasses, and struggle to type on their phones.

At around 0.15% BAC, nausea and vomiting commonly set in. Alcohol irritates the stomach lining and increases acid production, and your brain’s vomiting center activates as a protective response to what it recognizes as poisoning. The room may feel like it’s spinning, especially if you close your eyes or lie down. Loss of muscle control becomes more obvious, and you may struggle to stand without support.

Emotional Shifts

The emotional experience of being drunk is unpredictable. Early on, most people feel happier, more confident, and more sociable. Anxiety drops. You laugh more easily. Social interactions feel effortless in a way they might not when sober.

But alcohol doesn’t just lower the volume on anxiety. It lowers the volume on all emotional regulation. As BAC rises, emotional responses become exaggerated and harder to control. Small annoyances can trigger disproportionate anger. A sentimental song might bring tears. People often describe feeling emotions more intensely while simultaneously being less able to manage them. This is why arguments, crying, and impulsive decisions are so common later in a night of heavy drinking.

The increased aggression and risk-taking associated with drunkenness likely comes from alcohol disrupting your brain’s ability to properly read social situations. When you can’t accurately assess whether something is threatening or harmless, you’re more likely to approach situations you’d normally avoid.

Memory and Blackouts

Alcohol doesn’t erase memories you’ve already formed. Instead, it prevents your brain from creating new long-term memories. Information still enters short-term memory, which is why a blackout drunk person can hold a conversation or navigate a familiar route. But the transfer of those experiences into lasting storage gets blocked.

Blackouts typically begin at a BAC around 0.14% to 0.20%, though this varies between individuals. They come in two forms: fragmentary blackouts, where you lose patches of the night but can recall other parts (sometimes called “brownouts”), and complete blackouts, where entire hours vanish. During a blackout, you’re still conscious and making choices, but your brain simply isn’t recording. Peak BACs during blackout episodes average around 0.30% for men and 0.35% for women.

Why It Feels Different for Different People

Body composition plays a major role in how drunk you feel from the same amount of alcohol. Women generally reach higher BACs than men after consuming equivalent amounts, even when adjusted for body weight. This happens because women typically carry proportionally more body fat and less water than men at the same weight, and alcohol disperses through body water. Less water means a higher concentration of alcohol.

Beyond just reaching higher BACs, women tend to experience greater impairment in certain cognitive tasks, particularly those involving memory and divided attention. These differences become more apparent at moderate to high doses. At lower BACs (around 0.03%), men and women perform similarly. At 0.06% and above, the gap widens.

Tolerance also changes the experience significantly. Regular drinkers develop neurological adaptations that reduce alcohol’s effects, meaning they need more to feel the same buzz. But tolerance is deceptive: it changes how drunk you feel without changing how impaired you actually are. A tolerant drinker may feel relatively sober at a BAC that would have a newer drinker stumbling.

When Drunk Becomes Dangerous

Between 0.15% and 0.30% BAC, confusion, drowsiness, and vomiting are common. This range is genuinely risky because vomiting while semi-conscious creates a choking hazard. At 0.30% to 0.40%, alcohol poisoning becomes likely, with potential loss of consciousness. Above 0.40%, the risk of coma and death from respiratory failure is real. The brain regions that control automatic breathing can simply shut down.

Binge drinking, defined as reaching a BAC of 0.08% or higher, typically corresponds to about five drinks for men or four for women consumed within two hours. That threshold is lower than many people expect.

The Shift Into a Hangover

As your BAC drops back toward zero, the pleasant effects reverse. Your brain had been adjusting to alcohol’s sedative effects in real time, and when the alcohol clears, those adjustments leave you in a state of mild withdrawal. The result is restlessness, anxiety, and irritability that can feel worse than your baseline mood before you started drinking.

Meanwhile, your body is dealing with the toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism, a compound produced in the liver that triggers inflammation throughout the body, including in the brain and digestive tract. Alcohol also suppresses a hormone that tells your kidneys to retain water, which is why you urinate more while drinking and wake up dehydrated. Add in disrupted sleep (alcohol helps you fall asleep faster but fragments sleep quality and causes early waking) and direct irritation to the stomach lining, and you have the full constellation of a hangover: headache, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and a general feeling of being wrung out.
