What Does Being Drunk Feel Like—From Buzz to Blackout

Being drunk starts as a warm, loosened-up feeling and gradually shifts into something far less pleasant as you drink more. At low levels, alcohol produces relaxation, mild euphoria, and a sense that social situations are easier to navigate. At higher levels, it brings slurred speech, poor balance, nausea, confusion, and eventually a loss of consciousness. The experience isn’t one thing; it’s a spectrum that changes dramatically depending on how much you’ve consumed.

The First Drink or Two: Relaxation and a Buzz

At a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) around 0.02% to 0.05%, which is roughly one to two standard drinks for most people, alcohol creates a noticeable shift in mood. You feel more relaxed, slightly warmer, and less self-conscious. Conversations feel easier. Minor worries seem to fade into the background. This is the “buzz” stage, and it’s the part most people are chasing when they drink socially.

What’s happening in your brain: alcohol boosts the activity of your main calming chemical (GABA) while dialing down your main excitatory one (glutamate). The net effect is like turning down the volume on your nervous system. At the same time, alcohol triggers a release of dopamine in your brain’s reward circuit, which is responsible for that mild wave of pleasure and motivation to keep socializing or keep drinking.

Physically, your skin may flush and feel warm, especially in your fingers and toes. Studies measuring skin temperature after drinking found increases of 2 to 3 degrees in fingertips and toes. This happens because alcohol causes blood vessels near the skin’s surface to widen, pushing warm blood outward. It feels cozy, but it’s actually your body losing heat faster than normal.

Three to Four Drinks: The Tipping Point

Around a BAC of 0.08% to 0.10%, things start to shift. This is the legal limit for driving in most U.S. states, and it’s where impairment becomes hard to hide. Your reaction time slows noticeably. Speech starts to slur. Thinking takes longer, and your judgment about your own abilities becomes unreliable. You might feel confident that you’re “fine,” but your coordination and reasoning tell a different story.

The brain region most responsible for balance and coordinated movement, the cerebellum, is particularly sensitive to alcohol. This is why staggering gait is one of the most recognized signs of intoxication, and why roadside sobriety tests focus on balance and eye-hand coordination. Alcohol also disrupts the cerebellum’s role in tracking visual information when your head moves, which can create a sense that your surroundings are shifting or unstable. That “room is spinning” feeling has a real neurological basis: your brain is misjudging where objects are in space.

Emotionally, this is where alcohol’s effects become unpredictable. Some people get louder, more affectionate, or more adventurous. Others become argumentative or weepy. The prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for impulse control and long-term thinking, is increasingly suppressed at this stage. You’re more likely to say things you wouldn’t normally say, take risks you’d usually avoid, or miss social cues you’d ordinarily pick up on.

What Your Senses Actually Feel Like

Alcohol doesn’t just change your mood and coordination. It changes how you take in the world around you. Your peripheral vision narrows, depth perception becomes less accurate, and your ability to judge distances deteriorates. This is why drunk driving is so dangerous even at moderate BAC levels: the visual processing needed to track other cars, gauge stopping distance, and react to sudden changes is genuinely impaired, not just slowed.

Hearing also takes a hit, though in a less obvious way. Research on sensory processing shows that alcohol increases the dominance of visual information over auditory input. In practical terms, this means you’re more likely to miss what someone says in a noisy room or fail to register a sound that would normally get your attention. You’re not deaf, but your brain is less able to process multiple sensory streams at once.

Heavy Intoxication: Nausea, Confusion, and Blackouts

At a BAC of 0.15% and above, the experience stops being fun for most people. Nausea and vomiting are common as your body tries to rid itself of what it now recognizes as a toxin. Balance becomes severely compromised. Mood can swing wildly, and confusion sets in. Between 0.15% and 0.30%, drowsiness becomes overwhelming, and many people struggle to stay awake or follow a conversation.

This is also where blackouts can occur. A blackout isn’t the same as passing out. During a blackout, you’re still awake and functioning (often appearing drunk but conscious to others), yet your brain has stopped transferring short-term memories into long-term storage. The hippocampus, the brain structure responsible for memory consolidation, is temporarily shut down by high alcohol concentrations. The next day, you have gaps in your memory, sometimes hours long, with no way to recover what happened. Some people experience “fragmentary” blackouts where patches of memory are missing, while others experience “en bloc” blackouts where entire stretches of time are simply gone.

Above 0.30% BAC, you’re in the territory of alcohol poisoning. Loss of consciousness, dangerously slowed breathing, and a drop in body temperature are all possible. This is a medical emergency.

How Long the Feeling Lasts

Your liver processes roughly one standard drink per hour, though there’s significant individual variation. Some people metabolize alcohol three to four times faster than others due to genetic and environmental factors. If you’ve had four drinks, it could take four hours or more before your BAC returns to zero, and you’ll feel the effects of intoxication for most of that time. Eating before or during drinking slows the rate at which alcohol enters your bloodstream, which generally means a less intense peak but a longer, more gradual experience.

The hangover that follows heavy drinking is a separate process from intoxication itself, involving dehydration, inflammation, and disrupted sleep. But many people describe the tail end of being drunk as a period of fatigue, mild confusion, and a growing sense of physical discomfort that blurs into the early stages of a hangover.

Why It Feels Different for Different People

Two people can drink the same amount and have very different experiences. Body composition is the biggest factor. Women generally have proportionally more body fat and less body water than men of the same weight, which means alcohol is distributed in a smaller volume of water and reaches higher concentrations in the blood. A 140-pound woman drinking three glasses of wine will typically reach a higher BAC than a 140-pound man drinking the same amount, even after adjusting for body weight.

Tolerance also plays a major role. Regular drinkers develop a degree of neurological adaptation that makes the same BAC feel less intense. This doesn’t mean the impairment is gone; it means the brain has adjusted to functioning in an impaired state, which can actually make things more dangerous because you feel more capable than you are.

Genetics matter too. Variations in the enzymes that break down alcohol can make the experience more or less intense, or cause unpleasant reactions like facial flushing, rapid heartbeat, and nausea after even small amounts. Some research suggests that cognitive impairment from alcohol, particularly in tasks involving memory and divided attention, may be more pronounced in women, though motor skill impairment appears similar across sexes at the same BAC level.
