Brown vaginal discharge is usually just old blood. When blood leaves the uterus slowly, it has time to oxidize, which turns it from red to brown or rust-colored. In most cases, this is completely normal and tied to your menstrual cycle. Sometimes, though, brown discharge signals something else going on, from hormonal shifts to infections.
Why Blood Turns Brown
Fresh blood is red because it moves through the body quickly. When blood flows more slowly, or sits in the uterus for a while before making its way out, exposure to oxygen changes its color to brown. This is the same process that makes a cut on your skin darken as it heals. Brown discharge is essentially old blood mixed with your normal vaginal fluid, and the color alone isn’t a reason for concern.
Normal Causes Tied to Your Cycle
The most common reason for brown discharge is the tail end of your period. As your flow tapers off, the remaining blood takes longer to exit the uterus, giving it time to turn brown. You might notice brown spotting for a day or two after your period seems to have ended. The reverse happens too: a period that’s just beginning with a very light flow can start as brown discharge before picking up to a normal red flow.
Ovulation is another common trigger. Around the middle of your cycle, estrogen levels rise to help release an egg, then drop sharply right after. That sudden hormone dip can cause a small amount of bleeding from the uterine lining. Because it’s so light, it often shows up as pinkish-brown spotting rather than anything resembling a period. It typically lasts a day or two at most.
Other everyday causes include a reaction to a Pap smear, a vaginal exam, or vigorous sex. The cervix has a rich blood supply and can release a small amount of blood when irritated. This minor bleeding mixes with discharge and often appears brown by the time you notice it.
Brown Discharge and Pregnancy
Light brown or pink spotting can be one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. When a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, it can cause a small amount of bleeding known as implantation bleeding. This typically happens about 10 to 14 days after ovulation, which means it often shows up right around when you’d expect your period.
The key difference is the flow. Implantation bleeding is very light, more similar to vaginal discharge than a period. It shouldn’t soak through a pad. The color is usually pink or brown, not bright or dark red. If you see heavy bleeding, clots, or a flow that looks like a normal period, that’s not consistent with implantation bleeding and could point to something else. A home pregnancy test is the simplest way to sort this out if timing lines up.
Hormonal Birth Control and Spotting
Brown spotting is common when you start a new hormonal contraceptive or switch methods. Birth control pills, hormonal IUDs, and implants all work partly by thinning the uterine lining. As the body adjusts, small amounts of that thinner lining can shed irregularly, showing up as brown discharge between periods. This is sometimes called breakthrough bleeding.
It often takes a few months for your body to fully adjust to new hormonal contraception. If the spotting continues beyond three months or becomes heavier, it’s worth checking in with your provider to see if a different formulation would be a better fit.
Infections That Cause Brown Discharge
Brown discharge that comes with a strong or foul odor, pelvic pain, burning during urination, or itching is more likely tied to an infection. Sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea can irritate the cervix and cause bleeding between periods. Bacterial vaginosis, an overgrowth of bacteria normally present in the vagina, can also produce unusual discharge with a noticeable smell.
Left untreated, these infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, a more serious condition affecting the uterus, fallopian tubes, and surrounding tissue. Symptoms include lower belly pain, pain during sex, fever, and heavy or foul-smelling discharge. Pelvic inflammatory disease is treatable, but early treatment matters because delayed care increases the risk of long-term complications like fertility problems.
Perimenopause and Postmenopause
During the years leading up to menopause, fluctuating hormone levels make irregular bleeding and brown spotting increasingly common. Estrogen levels swing unpredictably, which can cause the uterine lining to build up unevenly and shed at odd times. Cycles may become shorter, longer, heavier, or lighter from month to month. Skipped ovulation, which happens frequently during perimenopause, also contributes to irregular bleeding patterns.
Dropping estrogen can cause the uterine lining to thin, a condition called endometrial atrophy, which itself can trigger light, irregular bleeding. Hormonal changes during this time also raise the risk of developing uterine polyps and other growths in the uterine lining. Any spotting or bleeding that occurs after you’ve gone a full 12 months without a period (meaning you’ve reached menopause) should be evaluated, regardless of color or amount.
When Brown Discharge Needs Attention
On its own, occasional brown discharge that lines up with your cycle is rarely a problem. But certain patterns deserve a closer look. Persistent brown or bloody discharge that has no connection to your period, especially if it’s accompanied by a foul odor, can sometimes be a symptom of cervical changes. Cervical cancer, though uncommon with regular screening, can produce a watery, bloody discharge that may be heavy and smell unpleasant. Routine Pap tests, generally recommended starting at age 21 and repeated every few years, are the main screening tool for catching cervical changes early.
It’s worth scheduling an appointment if you notice any of these alongside brown discharge: a strong or unusual vaginal odor, itching or burning around the vulva, pelvic pain, pain during sex, or bleeding between periods that doesn’t resolve within a cycle or two. These symptoms don’t automatically mean something serious, but they’re the body’s way of flagging that something has shifted and is worth investigating.
