Castor oil is a thick, pale yellow vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of the castor plant. Its primary active component, ricinoleic acid (which makes up about 90% of the oil), is responsible for nearly all of its effects on the body. Those effects range from stimulating bowel movements to moisturizing skin to reducing inflammation in joints. Some are well supported by evidence, others less so.
How It Works Inside the Body
When you swallow castor oil, enzymes in your small intestine break it down and release ricinoleic acid. This fatty acid directly activates a specific receptor on smooth muscle cells lining the intestines, triggering contractions that move contents through your digestive tract. The same receptor exists on uterine smooth muscle, which is why castor oil has historically been used to encourage labor contractions. In animal studies where this receptor was genetically removed, castor oil produced zero laxative effect and zero uterine response, confirming that ricinoleic acid’s interaction with this receptor is the sole mechanism behind both actions.
This is not a gentle process. The intestinal contractions castor oil produces are strong and relatively fast-acting, which is why the FDA classifies it as a stimulant laxative rather than a stool softener or bulk-forming fiber.
Laxative Use and Dosing
The FDA-approved dose for adults is 15 to 60 milliliters taken once, and it generally produces a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours. For children ages 2 to 11, the range is 5 to 15 milliliters. It’s designed for short-term, occasional constipation relief, not daily use.
Overuse carries real risks. Repeated doses can cause fluid loss through the stool, pulling water and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium out of your body. Common side effects even with a single dose include cramping, nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea. Some evidence suggests castor oil causes more side effects than other over-the-counter laxative options, which is one reason it has fallen out of favor compared to gentler alternatives like polyethylene glycol or fiber supplements.
Labor Induction
Because ricinoleic acid activates the same receptor on uterine muscle cells as it does on intestinal cells, castor oil has a long folk history as a labor-starting remedy. A retrospective study of women who used a castor oil cocktail to stimulate labor found that nearly 91% gave birth vaginally with few complications. Maternal side effects like nausea, vomiting, and severe diarrhea occurred in less than 7% of cases.
That said, these numbers come from women who were already at or near full term and used castor oil under the guidance of their birth teams. The dehydration risk from diarrhea is a genuine concern during labor, when your body already needs extra fluids. Taking castor oil earlier in pregnancy is particularly risky because those same uterine contractions could be harmful before the baby is ready.
Skin Moisturizing and Protection
Applied topically, castor oil acts as an emollient, meaning it forms a protective layer on the skin that prevents water from evaporating. This makes it effective at locking in moisture, especially on dry, cracked, or rough patches. The ricinoleic acid also has antibacterial and antifungal properties, inhibiting the growth of certain bacteria and yeast on the skin’s surface. These properties are well enough established that castor oil has been used industrially to coat grain and prevent spoilage.
The oil is thick and sticky compared to lighter options like jojoba or argan oil, so many people mix it with a thinner carrier oil before applying it. On its own, it can feel heavy, particularly on the face. For people with acne-prone skin, that occlusive quality can sometimes trap bacteria beneath the surface and worsen breakouts, so patch testing is worth the effort.
Dry Eye Relief
One of castor oil’s more surprising uses is in eye drops designed to treat dry eyes. Ophthalmic formulations containing 1.25% castor oil work by reinforcing the thin lipid (oil) layer that sits on top of your tear film. This layer normally prevents tears from evaporating too quickly, but it breaks down in people with certain types of dry eye, particularly those related to blocked oil glands in the eyelids.
Clinical testing shows that a single drop of castor oil emulsion increases tear lipid thickness for up to an hour and reduces dry eye symptoms for up to four hours. It also reduces the rate at which tears evaporate, outperforming conventional water-based drops in that regard. In a two-week study of patients with blocked eyelid oil glands, castor oil drops used six times daily improved symptom scores and increased tear stability compared to placebo. These are medical-grade emulsions, though, not raw castor oil from a bottle, which would blur your vision and irritate your eyes.
Hair and Eyelash Conditioning
Castor oil is one of the most popular natural hair treatments, often promoted for thickening hair and accelerating growth. The evidence here is limited. One preclinical study in rabbits tested lotions containing 35% and 40% castor oil on shaved skin patches. The 35% formulation produced longer, thicker hair regrowth in more than half of treated areas after one month. The 40% version, oddly, did not perform as well.
No large human clinical trials have confirmed that castor oil stimulates new hair follicles or reverses hair loss. What it clearly does is coat the hair shaft, reducing moisture loss and friction between strands. This can make hair appear shinier, smoother, and less prone to breakage. For eyelashes and eyebrows, the same coating effect can create the appearance of fuller, darker lashes over time, even if the actual number of hairs hasn’t changed. Many people find this cosmetic benefit worthwhile on its own.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Ricinoleic acid has anti-inflammatory properties when applied to the skin, helping reduce swelling and localized pain. People use castor oil topically on sore joints and muscles, sometimes with a warm compress (often called a “castor oil pack”) to enhance absorption. The warmth itself increases blood flow to the area, which can compound the soothing effect.
The evidence for this use is mostly anecdotal and mechanistic rather than drawn from large clinical trials. Ricinoleic acid does interact with inflammation pathways in lab settings, but how much of it penetrates through the skin and reaches deeper tissues like joint capsules is not well quantified. For surface-level soreness and mild joint stiffness, many people report relief, but it is unlikely to replace other approaches for significant inflammatory conditions.
Safety and Ricin Concerns
Castor seeds naturally contain ricin, one of the most toxic biological substances known. This understandably makes some people nervous about consuming an oil pressed from those seeds. During manufacturing, the heat used in hot-pressing denatures the ricin protein completely, destroying its toxic structure. Testing of hot-pressed castor seed meal shows no detectable ricin activity. Commercial castor oil sold for ingestion contains no ricin.
The more practical safety concerns are the ones already mentioned: cramping, diarrhea, nausea, and electrolyte loss from oral use. People who are pregnant (and not actively trying to induce labor at term), those with intestinal blockages, and those with inflammatory bowel conditions should avoid swallowing castor oil. For topical use, allergic reactions are uncommon but possible, so testing a small patch of skin before widespread application is a reasonable precaution.
