CNA training combines classroom instruction, lab practice, and supervised clinical hours in a program that typically runs four to eight weeks. Federal law sets the floor at 75 total hours, but more than half of U.S. states require significantly more, ranging up to 180 hours depending on where you live. Here’s what you’ll actually learn, how the training is structured, and what it takes to get certified.

How Many Hours You’ll Need

The federal minimum, set by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA), is 75 clock hours of training, with at least 16 of those spent in supervised hands-on practice. But 30 states and Washington, D.C. have raised that bar. Maine requires the most at 180 hours. Missouri follows at 175 hours. California, Delaware, and Oregon all require 150 or more. Many states, including Florida, Illinois, Virginia, and Wisconsin, land around 120 hours. Even states on the lower end, like Georgia and Washington, require 85 hours.

These hours are split between classroom learning and clinical training. Texas, for example, breaks its 100-hour requirement into 60 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of hands-on resident care in a nursing facility. The ratio varies by state, but every program includes both components. A full-time program often wraps up in about five weeks. Part-time and weekend formats stretch longer, sometimes running through a full semester.

Classroom Curriculum

The classroom portion covers the foundational knowledge you need before touching a patient. It’s a mix of medical basics, safety protocols, and communication skills. The major subject areas break down into several categories.

Infection prevention and control takes up a significant chunk of early instruction. You’ll learn how infections spread (the “chain of infection”), how to properly wash your hands, when and how to use personal protective equipment like gloves and gowns, and how to handle contaminated linens and spills. The curriculum also covers HIV, hepatitis, and the specific behaviors that increase transmission risk.

Vital signs are another core focus. You’ll learn to measure temperature using oral, ear, and underarm methods, count pulse and respirations at the wrist, and take blood pressure with a manual cuff using the two-step approach. Beyond the mechanics, you’ll learn what normal ranges look like and how to document readings accurately. Pain assessment is part of this module too, including how to recognize discomfort in patients who can’t verbally communicate it, through facial expressions or body language.

Safety and emergency response covers fall prevention techniques, common facility accidents, oxygen safety guidelines, seizure response, and basic life support. Most programs require you to earn a CPR certification before completing training. You’ll also learn about Material Safety Data Sheets, which document hazards associated with chemicals and cleaning products used in care facilities.

Residents’ rights and communication round out the classroom work. Federal law protects nursing home residents’ dignity, privacy, and autonomy. You’ll study these rights in detail because CNAs interact with residents more than any other staff member. This section also covers how to communicate with patients who have cognitive impairments, how to report abuse or neglect, and how to work within the care team alongside nurses and other staff.

Hands-On Skills You’ll Practice

The clinical and lab portions of training are where you practice the physical skills of caregiving. You’ll work first in a lab setting, often on mannequins or classmates, then move to a real care facility under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. The national skills exam tests 22 specific skills, but your program will cover many more. The core hands-on competencies include:

  • Personal hygiene care: giving complete baths, partial baths, and showers; oral care and denture cleaning; hair care and shaving; foot care (without nail clipping, which is outside a CNA’s scope); and perineal care for both male and female residents
  • Dressing and mobility: helping residents dress, especially those with weakness on one side of their body; safe transfers from bed to wheelchair and back; proper body mechanics to protect your own back; and repositioning bedridden residents to prevent pressure sores
  • Nutrition support: assisting residents with eating, using adaptive utensils and other assistive devices, and recognizing signs of swallowing problems that need to be reported immediately
  • Elimination care: catheter care, emptying and measuring ostomy bags, and helping with bedpans and toileting
  • Skin monitoring: checking for and reporting changes in skin integrity, which is critical for catching pressure ulcers early

You’ll also practice making occupied and unoccupied beds, measuring and recording intake and output, and applying non-sterile bandages. Every skill follows a specific sequence of steps, and you’ll be graded on whether you perform them correctly, in order, while maintaining the resident’s dignity and privacy throughout.

Online and Hybrid Options

Some states allow the classroom portion of CNA training to be completed online. Texas, for instance, offers a state-created computer-based training module that covers the full 60 hours of classroom content. You can work through it at your own pace, from anywhere. But the clinical hours still have to happen in person at an approved facility. No state allows you to skip the hands-on component. If you see a program advertising “fully online CNA certification,” be cautious. You will always need to complete clinical hours in a real care setting before you’re eligible to sit for the exam.

Enrollment Requirements

Most programs require you to be at least 16 or 18 years old, depending on the state, and to have a high school diploma or GED. Beyond that, expect to submit vaccination and medical records, including a TB skin test and flu shot. A criminal background check and drug screening are standard. Some facilities won’t allow students with certain felony convictions to complete clinicals on-site, which can affect your ability to finish the program.

You don’t need any prior healthcare experience. CNA training is designed as an entry point into the field.

What the Certification Exam Looks Like

After completing your training program, you’ll take a state competency evaluation, which most states administer through the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP). The exam has two parts: a written (or oral) knowledge test and a hands-on skills demonstration.

The written test covers the classroom material, including infection control, safety, residents’ rights, and basic nursing concepts. The skills test requires you to perform a set of tasks randomly selected from the 22 testable skills, in front of a nurse evaluator. You’ll be scored on each individual step. Common tested skills include handwashing, taking vital signs, positioning a resident, and providing mouth care. You typically need to pass both portions to earn your certification. Most states allow you to retake a failed section without repeating the entire exam.

Program Costs

CNA training is one of the more affordable healthcare credentials to earn. Community college programs often run between $1,000 and $1,500 for tuition and fees. Edmonds College in Washington, for example, lists total program costs around $1,190 plus roughly $45 for scrubs and additional costs for textbooks. Private training schools may charge more, sometimes $2,000 to $3,000. On top of tuition, budget for your background check, drug screen, scrubs, a watch with a second hand (for counting pulse and respirations), and the state exam fee, which typically runs $100 to $150.

Some employers, particularly nursing homes facing staffing shortages, offer free CNA training in exchange for a commitment to work at their facility for a set period after certification. Community colleges and workforce development programs sometimes offer financial aid or scholarships as well.

Keeping Your Certification Active

CNA certifications don’t last forever. Most states require renewal every two years, and you’ll need to show that you’ve worked a minimum number of hours as a CNA during that period, typically at least eight hours of paid nursing-related work. Continuing education requirements vary by state. Some require a set number of in-service training hours provided by your employer; others have more formal continuing education requirements. If your certification lapses because you haven’t worked, most states require you to retake the competency exam rather than repeat the full training program.
