The Core Idea: Why It’s Hard to Pin Down

Most definitions of consciousness share a common thread: it involves subjective experience. You don’t just react to the world like a thermostat reacts to temperature. You experience it. There is an inner life, a “what it’s like” quality to your mental states. Philosophers call these qualities “qualia,” and they sit at the heart of what makes consciousness so difficult to study. Consciousness is a first-person phenomenon, and science is a third-person endeavor. You can observe someone’s brain activity on a scanner, but you can’t directly access what they’re feeling.

The theory assigns a numerical value, called Phi, to any physical system. The higher the Phi, the more conscious the system is predicted to be. A disconnected collection of independent switches would have very low Phi, while a brain with billions of densely interconnected neurons would have very high Phi. This theory is unusual because it doesn’t limit consciousness to brains. In principle, any system with enough integrated information could possess some degree of experience.

A third framework, the Higher-Order Thought Theory, suggests that a brain state becomes conscious only when you form a thought about that state. Levels of Consciousness in Medicine

In clinical settings, consciousness isn’t treated as an all-or-nothing phenomenon. It exists on a spectrum. Doctors assess where a patient falls on that spectrum using tools like the Glasgow Coma Scale, which scores three types of response: eye opening, verbal response, and motor response. Scores range from 3 (no response at all) to 15 (fully awake and oriented). A score of 3 to 8 indicates severe impairment, 9 to 12 moderate, and 13 to 15 mild.

Below full awareness, several distinct states are recognized. In a coma, there are no signs of wakefulness or awareness. A person in a vegetative state (sometimes called unresponsive wakefulness syndrome) may open their eyes and have sleep-wake cycles, but shows no reproducible evidence of awareness of themselves or their environment. The minimally conscious state is different in a crucial way: the person shows small but detectable signs of awareness, such as following a moving object with their eyes, or occasionally responding to a simple command like “squeeze my hand.” Clinicians distinguish between two subtypes. In the lower form, responses are limited to things like visual tracking. In the higher form, the person can follow simple verbal instructions. Emergence from a minimally conscious state is marked by regaining the ability to communicate or use objects purposefully.

The challenge is that these assessments rely on visible movement. A patient who is internally aware but physically unable to respond could be misclassified as unconscious. Brain imaging studies have revealed cases where patients diagnosed as vegetative showed brain activity patterns consistent with awareness when asked to imagine performing tasks, highlighting how much we still have to learn about detecting consciousness from the outside.

Consciousness Beyond Human Brains

As artificial intelligence systems grow more complex, the question of whether non-biological systems could be conscious has moved from pure philosophy into active scientific discussion. In 2023, a group of 19 computer scientists, neuroscientists, and philosophers proposed a systematic approach: rather than a single test, they developed a checklist of 14 indicators drawn from six neuroscience-based theories of consciousness. They then evaluated existing AI architectures against those indicators.

The criteria include things like whether the system processes information through feedback loops, whether independent streams of information pass through a bottleneck to combine in a shared workspace, and whether the system has mechanisms for controlling attention or receiving feedback from a physical environment. The researchers reasoned that the more indicators an AI checks off, the more reason there is to consider it might be conscious. Current AI systems, including the type of large language model behind tools like ChatGPT, meet some of these criteria but fall well short of the full list. The framework doesn’t claim to prove consciousness in any system. It provides a structured way to ask the question rather than relying on intuition or surface-level behavior like producing convincing conversation.

What We Know and What Remains Open

Consciousness, at its core, means subjective experience. It’s what disappears when you go under general anesthesia and returns when you wake up. Science can increasingly describe its physical signatures: the brain regions involved, the patterns of neural communication, the measurable differences between conscious and unconscious states. But the deeper question of why physical processes produce inner experience at all remains genuinely unresolved. Some researchers argue a true scientific theory of consciousness may not be possible, given that the phenomenon is inherently subjective while science demands objectivity. Others believe the gap will close as theories like Global Workspace and Integrated Information are refined and tested.

What’s clear is that consciousness isn’t a single thing with a single definition. It’s a word that covers a spectrum, from the faintest flicker of awareness in a minimally conscious patient to the rich inner life of a person lost in thought. Understanding it requires drawing on neuroscience, philosophy, clinical medicine, and increasingly, computer science.
