Cupping creates suction on the skin that pulls blood into the underlying tissue, temporarily increasing local circulation and triggering a mild inflammatory response that may help muscles recover from soreness and exercise. The circular marks it leaves are essentially controlled bruises, and the therapy’s effects on muscles range from measurable changes in blood flow to less certain claims about flexibility and performance.

How Cupping Affects Blood Flow

When a cup is placed on the skin and suction is applied, the negative pressure draws skin, muscle, and connective tissue upward into the cup. This causes the small blood vessels in the area to expand, flooding the tissue with fresh blood. The result is localized redness and, eventually, the characteristic round marks that can last anywhere from a few hours to two weeks depending on intensity.

What’s interesting is that these circulatory effects aren’t limited to the spot directly under the cup. A study using near-infrared spectroscopy to measure tissue oxygen levels found that cupping improved microvascular reactivity even in untreated areas. Specifically, after cupping, tissues took longer to lose oxygen under restricted blood flow and recovered oxygen faster once flow was restored. In practical terms, this suggests cupping may improve how efficiently your small blood vessels deliver and recycle blood to muscle tissue, at least temporarily.

The suction also shifts local metabolism toward anaerobic processing, which shows up as a spike in lactate levels in the surrounding tissue. This is similar to what happens during intense exercise, and it may be part of why the body mounts a healing response to the area.

Effects on Inflammation and Soreness

One of the more concrete findings involves cupping’s effect on inflammatory markers. In a study of martial arts athletes, cupping significantly lowered two key inflammatory signals (IL-6 and TNF-alpha) compared to baseline, both immediately after treatment and 30 minutes later. When athletes who received cupping then performed vigorous exercise, their inflammatory response was lower than athletes who exercised without cupping beforehand.

This matters for muscle recovery because inflammation is what drives delayed-onset muscle soreness, the deep ache you feel a day or two after a hard workout. If cupping dampens that inflammatory cascade, it could reduce how sore you feel and how long soreness lasts. Research on table tennis players after intensive training found that dry cupping reduced perceived exertion and certain inflammation markers measured 30 minutes post-treatment, though it didn’t significantly change creatine kinase levels, a common marker of muscle damage, in that short window.

The anti-inflammatory effect is real but appears modest, and researchers note that 30 minutes may not be enough time to capture the full recovery picture, since muscle damage markers typically peak 24 to 72 hours after exercise.

Does Cupping Improve Flexibility?

Many people try cupping hoping it will loosen tight muscles and improve range of motion. The evidence here is less encouraging. A controlled study tested whether 10 minutes of static cupping on the hamstrings improved flexibility in people with limited range of motion (less than 80 degrees). The result: cupping performed no better than a sham treatment or doing nothing at all. There was no significant difference between any of the three groups.

This doesn’t rule out the possibility that repeated sessions or different cupping techniques could affect flexibility over time, but a single session of dry cupping doesn’t appear to mechanically “release” tight muscles the way stretching or manual therapy can.

What the Marks Tell You

The circular discolorations left by cupping are caused by blood pooling in the tissue after capillaries break under suction. They’re not harmful, but their appearance and duration vary:

  • Light pink marks typically fade within a few hours.
  • Red marks generally clear in two to three days.
  • Red marks with dark spots can take three days to a week.
  • Deep red or purple marks may take up to two weeks to fully disappear.

Darker marks tend to appear in areas with more muscle tension or restricted blood flow. As you receive more sessions over time, marks generally become lighter, which practitioners interpret as improved circulation in the area.

What the Evidence Actually Supports

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that most cupping research is low quality and that while cupping may help reduce pain, the evidence isn’t strong. There isn’t enough high-quality research to draw firm conclusions about its effectiveness for other conditions.

That said, the physiological mechanisms are real. Cupping does increase local blood flow, it does alter inflammatory markers, and it does create a measurable tissue response. The question is whether these short-term changes translate into meaningful recovery benefits that you’d notice compared to simply resting, icing, or getting a massage. For many athletes, cupping feels good and provides temporary pain relief, which may be partly due to the same gate-control mechanism that makes rubbing a sore spot feel better: the sensation of suction competes with pain signals heading to the brain.

Who Should Avoid Cupping

Cupping is generally safe when performed by a trained practitioner, but it’s not appropriate for everyone. People taking blood-thinning medications are at higher risk for excessive bruising and should avoid it. Those with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area, sunburned skin, or open wounds shouldn’t have cups applied to affected areas. There also isn’t enough safety data for cupping during pregnancy.

The most common side effects are the marks themselves, mild soreness at the cupping site, and occasional lightheadedness during treatment. Serious complications are rare but can include burns (from fire cupping done improperly) or skin infections if wet cupping, which involves small incisions, is performed without proper sterile technique.
