What Does Drinking a Lot of Water Do to Your Body?

Drinking a lot of water keeps your kidneys functioning efficiently, supports your heart and brain, helps digestion, and can modestly improve your skin. For most adults, the general guideline is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of total fluid per day for men and 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) for women, though much of that comes from food and other beverages. Here’s what’s actually happening inside your body when you stay well hydrated, and what happens if you overdo it.

How Your Kidneys Handle the Water

Your kidneys filter roughly 180 liters of water every day, but only about 1.5 to 2 liters end up as urine. That means nearly 99% of the water your kidneys process gets reabsorbed back into your bloodstream. The system is remarkably responsive: when you drink more water, a hormone called antidiuretic hormone (ADH) drops, telling your kidneys to let more water pass through as urine. When you’re dehydrated, ADH rises, and your kidneys hold on to almost every drop.

This is why drinking plenty of water helps your kidneys do their primary job of flushing out waste products, excess minerals, and toxins. When fluid is scarce, your kidneys concentrate your urine to conserve water, which over time can contribute to kidney stone formation. Staying well hydrated dilutes the substances in urine that clump together into stones.

Your Brain Notices Quickly

Even mild dehydration, around 1 to 2% of your body weight in fluid loss, is enough to impair cognitive function. That translates to roughly 1.5 to 3 pounds of water loss for most people, which can happen easily on a hot day or during a busy stretch where you forget to drink. The effects show up as difficulty concentrating, increased fatigue, and noticeable mood changes like irritability or anxiety.

Drinking enough water reverses these effects relatively fast. If you’ve ever felt foggy-headed in the afternoon and perked up after a glass of water, that wasn’t placebo. Your brain is about 75% water by weight, and it’s one of the first organs to signal when fluid levels drop.

Effects on Your Heart and Blood Pressure

Water makes up a large portion of your blood volume. When you’re dehydrated, blood volume drops, which means your heart has to work harder to push blood through your vessels. As one Cleveland Clinic cardiologist put it, “you’re just not filling up the pipes enough for what your vascular system needs.” Low blood volume leads to low blood pressure, and your organs may not get the oxygen they need to function properly.

Dehydration also raises sodium concentration in your blood, which triggers your body to release more vasopressin, a hormone that constricts blood vessels and tells your kidneys to retain water. This is a survival mechanism, but when it kicks in regularly because you’re chronically under-hydrated, it puts unnecessary strain on your cardiovascular system. Drinking enough water helps maintain stable blood volume and lets your heart pump more efficiently.

Digestion and Constipation

Water softens stool and makes it easier to pass. This is straightforward physiology: your large intestine absorbs water from digested food, and if there isn’t enough water available, the result is hard, dry stool that moves slowly. Chronic low fluid intake is one of the most common and most fixable causes of constipation.

This matters even more if you eat a high-fiber diet. Fiber works by drawing water into the bowel to add bulk and softness to stool. If you increase fiber without increasing water, you can actually make constipation worse, because the fiber absorbs what little fluid is available and creates a dense, difficult-to-pass mass.

What It Does (and Doesn’t Do) for Your Skin

There’s a widespread belief that drinking water gives you glowing skin, and the evidence is real but modest. Studies on young, healthy women show that increasing water intake raises both surface and deep skin hydration levels. One study found the skin hydration index rose significantly, from about 34 to nearly 40 on a standardized scale, after a period of increased water consumption.

That said, drinking water won’t erase wrinkles or replace a good moisturizer. The hydration improvements are measurable but subtle. If you’re already drinking adequate amounts of water, adding more won’t dramatically change your skin’s appearance. The biggest visible difference comes when someone goes from chronically under-hydrated to properly hydrated, where skin can look less dull and feel less tight.

Physical Performance Takes a Hit Without It

Losing just 2% of your body weight in sweat is enough to measurably reduce your aerobic capacity, strength, and endurance. For a 160-pound person, that’s a little over 3 pounds of fluid, which an active person can lose in under an hour of intense exercise in warm conditions. The performance decline gets steeper with greater fluid loss.

This is why athletes and coaches obsess over hydration strategies. But it applies to recreational exercisers too. If your runs feel harder on days you haven’t been drinking much, or your energy drops off a cliff halfway through a workout, dehydration is a likely culprit. Drinking water before, during, and after exercise maintains blood volume, helps regulate body temperature through sweat, and delays the onset of fatigue.

The Metabolism Question

You may have heard that drinking cold water boosts your metabolism. One widely cited study reported that drinking 500 ml (about 16 ounces) of water caused a 30% increase in metabolic rate, with the effect peaking around 30 to 40 minutes and lasting over an hour. However, a follow-up study found no increase in energy expenditure after drinking distilled water at room temperature. The original claim hasn’t held up well under scrutiny, and any metabolic boost from water alone is likely negligible in terms of actual calorie burning.

Where water does help with weight management is simpler: drinking a glass before meals can reduce how much you eat by making you feel fuller. It also replaces calorie-dense beverages. Swapping a daily soda for water eliminates 140 or more calories without any other dietary changes.

When Too Much Becomes Dangerous

Drinking excessive amounts of water in a short period can cause a condition called hyponatremia, where blood sodium drops below 135 millimoles per liter (normal is 135 to 145). Your kidneys can only excrete about 0.8 to 1 liter of water per hour, so anything beyond that pace starts diluting your blood sodium.

Mild hyponatremia causes nausea, headaches, and confusion. Severe cases lead to muscle spasms, seizures, coma, and can be fatal. Acute hyponatremia, where sodium drops rapidly, is particularly dangerous because it causes the brain to swell. This is rare in everyday life but has occurred in endurance athletes who drink far more water than they lose in sweat, and in people who consume several liters in a very short window.

For most people, the risk isn’t overhydration. It’s not drinking enough. But the takeaway is that more isn’t always better. Spread your water intake throughout the day rather than forcing large amounts at once, and let thirst be a reasonable guide, especially if your kidneys are healthy and you’re not exercising intensely in the heat.
