What Does Drinking a Lot of Water Do to Your Body?

Drinking plenty of water keeps your kidneys filtering efficiently, supports brain function, and helps prevent kidney stones. But the effects go beyond simple thirst relief. Water plays a role in nearly every system in your body, from how sharply you think to how well your skin holds moisture. Here’s what actually happens when you increase your water intake, and where the line is between helpful and too much.

How Water Moves Through Your Body

Water doesn’t just slosh around in your stomach. Your cells are lined with specialized channel proteins that shuttle water molecules in and out based on your body’s needs. Some cell membranes pack more than 10,000 of these channels per square micron of surface area, which gives your tissues the ability to rapidly adjust their water content. This is how your body moves nutrients into cells, flushes waste out, and maintains the delicate chemical balance that keeps organs functioning.

Your kidneys filter roughly 80 to 120 milliliters of blood per minute. Most of that filtered fluid gets reabsorbed back into your bloodstream, leaving only about 1 to 2 milliliters per minute as actual urine. When you drink more water, your kidneys have an easier time diluting waste products like urea and creatinine, which means those substances leave your body more efficiently rather than building up.

Your Brain Notices First

One of the earliest effects of not drinking enough water is a dip in mental performance. Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that losing just 1 to 2 percent of your body weight in water (which can happen from skipping fluids during a busy day or a moderate workout) impaired visual vigilance and slowed reaction times on working memory tasks. The participants also reported increased tension, anxiety, and fatigue. These effects showed up even at rest, not just during exercise.

The threshold matters here. Studies suggest that around 2 percent body mass loss is where cognitive problems become more pronounced, but measurable changes in attention and mood start creeping in at just over 1 percent. For a 150-pound person, that’s less than two pounds of water weight. Staying consistently hydrated helps you avoid that subtle fog that many people have learned to ignore.

Kidney Stone Risk Drops Significantly

If there’s one well-documented reason to drink more water, it’s kidney stone prevention. Stones form when minerals like calcium and oxalate become too concentrated in your urine and start crystallizing. Diluting your urine by drinking more fluids directly lowers the concentration of these minerals below the thresholds where crystals begin to form.

The numbers are striking. People who drink 13 or more glasses of fluid per day (about 2.3 liters) have a 50 percent lower risk of developing kidney stones compared to those who drink six glasses or fewer. For every additional 200-milliliter glass you add per day, the risk drops by about 13 percent. Current clinical guidelines recommend at least 2.5 liters of fluid daily for stone prevention, with higher targets for people who’ve had recurrent stones.

If you’ve already had a kidney stone, increasing your urine output by a liter per day reduces the chance of recurrence by 68 percent. That’s one of the most effective non-medication interventions available for a condition that affects roughly 1 in 10 people at some point in their lives.

What It Does (and Doesn’t Do) for Your Skin

The idea that drinking water gives you glowing skin is everywhere, but the evidence is more nuanced. In a study of 80 older adults who added an extra liter of water per day for 42 days, their skin hydration index improved significantly, rising from about 34 to nearly 40 on a standardized scale. That’s a real, measurable change in how much moisture the skin retained.

However, the same study found that transepidermal water loss (the rate at which moisture escapes through the skin’s surface) also increased. In other words, more water was getting to the skin, but more was also evaporating. A separate study in younger women who added two liters per day found no change in water loss through the skin at all. So while hydration can modestly improve skin moisture levels, it’s not a replacement for moisturizers or sun protection. The effect is real but limited, and it varies depending on age and baseline hydration.

How Much You Actually Need

The old “eight glasses a day” rule dates back to a 1945 recommendation from the U.S. Food and Nutrition Board, which suggested 2.5 liters of daily water intake. What almost everyone forgets is that the same recommendation noted most of that water could come from food. Fruits, vegetables, soups, coffee, and other beverages all count toward your total.

Current estimates from the Mayo Clinic suggest that healthy adults typically need about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) for women and 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) for men in total daily fluid from all sources, including food. Most people eating a regular diet and drinking when thirsty already get close to this without obsessing over it. Your needs increase with exercise, hot weather, illness (especially fever, vomiting, or diarrhea), and pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The simplest gauge is your urine color. Pale yellow means you’re well hydrated. Dark yellow or amber means you need more fluid. Clear and colorless all day long may mean you’re overdoing it.

When Too Much Water Becomes Dangerous

Drinking far more water than your kidneys can process leads to a condition called hyponatremia, where blood sodium drops below 135 millimoles per liter. Healthy blood sodium sits between 135 and 145 mmol/L, and even a small dip below that range can cause nausea, headaches, and confusion. Severe cases can trigger seizures, coma, or death.

This typically happens in specific situations: endurance athletes who drink excessive water during long races without replacing electrolytes, or people who force extremely large volumes of water in a short period. Your kidneys can handle a lot, but they have a maximum processing speed. Drinking several liters within an hour or two overwhelms that capacity, dilutes your blood sodium, and causes cells (including brain cells) to swell.

For most people going about their daily lives, hyponatremia isn’t a realistic concern. It becomes relevant during marathons, intense hiking in heat, or if someone is following extreme “water challenge” trends. Spreading your intake throughout the day and including electrolytes during prolonged exercise keeps you in the safe zone.

Practical Effects You’ll Notice

When you go from chronically under-hydrated to consistently drinking enough water, the changes tend to show up in a predictable order. Energy and alertness improve first, often within a day or two, simply because your brain is no longer operating in a mild deficit. Digestion often improves as well, since water helps move fiber through the intestines and softens stool.

You’ll urinate more frequently, which is normal and expected. Over a week or two, your body adjusts somewhat, and the frequency becomes less disruptive. Joint comfort can improve because the cartilage in your knees, hips, and spine is roughly 60 to 80 percent water, and staying hydrated helps maintain its cushioning ability. Exercise performance also gets a boost, since even mild dehydration reduces endurance and increases perceived effort during physical activity.

What you probably won’t experience from water alone: dramatic weight loss, cleared acne, or a complete energy transformation. Water supports all of these systems, but it’s one factor among many. The real benefit of consistent hydration is that it removes a bottleneck. Your body simply works better when it has enough fluid to run its basic processes without rationing.
