Drinking hot water offers several modest but real benefits, mostly related to digestion, nasal congestion, and circulation. It’s not a cure-all, but the warm temperature does interact with your body differently than cold water in ways worth understanding.
Nasal Congestion and Sinus Relief
One of the best-studied effects of hot water is its impact on nasal congestion. In a study published in the journal Chest, researchers measured how fast mucus moved through the nasal passages of 15 healthy subjects after drinking hot water, cold water, and chicken soup. Sipping hot water increased nasal mucus velocity from 6.2 to 8.4 millimeters per minute within five minutes. Cold water did the opposite, slowing mucus movement from 7.3 down to 4.5 mm per minute.
The key detail: the benefit came from the steam, not the liquid itself. When participants drank the same hot water through a straw with a covered cup (preventing vapor from reaching their nostrils), mucus velocity didn’t change. So the mechanism is straightforward. You inhale warm, moist air while sipping, and that loosens things up in your nasal passages. The effect is temporary, returning to baseline after about 30 minutes, but it explains why a hot cup of anything feels so good when you’re stuffy.
Digestion and Bowel Movements
There’s a widespread belief that hot water “improves digestion,” but the reality is more specific. Warm liquids can help relax the smooth muscle of your digestive tract, which may make bowel movements easier. That’s different from saying digestion itself becomes more efficient. As a gastroenterologist at UVA Health has noted, the limited evidence we have suggests some benefit for easing constipation rather than enhancing nutrient absorption.
A small clinical study tested this directly. Twenty-five participants with constipation drank 500 milliliters (about two cups) of warm water at 45°C each morning before breakfast for three consecutive days. On the first day, 68% of participants had a bowel movement. By the second day, that number rose to 88%. Over the full three days, 96% of participants were able to have at least one bowel movement. That’s a striking result for such a simple intervention, though the study was small and lacked a control group drinking room-temperature water. Still, if you deal with sluggish mornings in the bathroom, a couple of cups of warm water before breakfast is a low-risk experiment.
Metabolic Rate and Calorie Burn
Drinking water of any temperature gives your metabolism a small, temporary bump. A study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking 500 ml (about 17 ounces) of water increased metabolic rate by 30%. That sounds dramatic, but the actual calorie burn is tiny.
Here’s where temperature gets interesting. The total energy your body expended after drinking room-temperature water (22°C) was about 70 kilojoules, roughly 17 calories. After drinking body-temperature water (37°C), it was about 40 kilojoules, or roughly 10 calories. The difference exists because your body burns energy warming cooler water up to core temperature. So cold water actually produces a slightly larger metabolic effect than hot water. Neither amount is meaningful for weight loss. You’d need to drink unrealistic volumes to burn even a fraction of what a short walk would accomplish.
Circulation and Blood Flow
Warm liquids raise your internal temperature slightly, which causes blood vessels near the skin to dilate. This is the same basic response your body uses to cool itself, and it results in increased blood flow to your extremities. Research on exercise physiology confirms this: after ingesting 50°C water, skin blood flow measured 407% of baseline compared to 279% with near-freezing water. That’s a meaningful difference in how much blood reaches your skin and peripheral tissues.
Whether this translates to long-term cardiovascular benefits like lower blood pressure is less clear. The immediate vasodilation is real, and it’s why hot water can feel soothing if your hands and feet tend to run cold. But treating it as a heart disease prevention strategy goes beyond what the evidence supports.
Sweating and Core Temperature
Hot water does nudge your core temperature upward, which can trigger earlier and more vigorous sweating, particularly during physical activity. Researchers found that people who drank 50°C water before exercising started sweating sooner and produced more sweat than those who drank near-freezing water. The body essentially gets a head start on its cooling response.
This is sometimes framed as “detoxification,” but that’s misleading. Sweat is mostly water and salt. Your kidneys and liver handle actual detoxification. The practical takeaway is simpler: if you drink hot water before or during exercise in warm conditions, your body will activate its cooling systems faster. That can be useful or annoying depending on the context, but it’s not flushing toxins.
How Hot Is Too Hot
There is a genuine safety threshold. A review of the evidence led the International Agency for Research on Cancer to conclude that beverages consumed above 150°F (65°C) may increase the risk of esophageal cancer. This applies to any hot drink: tea, coffee, water, soup. The damage comes from repeated thermal injury to the lining of the esophagus, which over years can promote cancerous changes.
For context, most coffee is served between 140°F and 160°F, and freshly boiled water is 212°F. If you need to blow on your drink or wait for it to cool, it’s probably close to or above that threshold. A good rule of thumb: if it’s comfortable to sip without hesitation, you’re fine. If it burns your lip, let it cool. The beneficial effects described above don’t require scalding temperatures. Water between 120°F and 140°F (warm to comfortably hot) delivers the same benefits without the risk.
What Hot Water Doesn’t Do
Several popular claims about hot water lack meaningful evidence. It doesn’t “flush toxins” any better than room-temperature water. It doesn’t meaningfully aid weight loss beyond the handful of extra calories your body burns processing any fluid. It doesn’t improve skin health through some internal hydration mechanism that cold water can’t match. And while it can relax digestive muscles, it doesn’t speed up the chemical breakdown of food or improve nutrient absorption.
The real benefits are more practical than transformative. Hot water loosens nasal congestion through steam, may ease constipation when consumed on an empty stomach, and promotes peripheral blood flow. For many people, warm water is also simply more pleasant to drink in volume, which means they stay better hydrated overall. That alone may be the most useful effect of all.
