Ear ringing can sound like a steady, high-pitched tone similar to a tuning fork, but that’s only one version. People with tinnitus describe hearing buzzing, roaring, whistling, humming, clicking, hissing, and squealing. The sound varies widely from person to person, and some people hear more than one type at the same time.

The Most Common Sounds

The classic description is a continuous, high-pitched ringing, like the lingering tone you hear after a loud concert. Most people’s tinnitus falls in the higher frequency range, with the most common pitch centering around 6,000 Hz, roughly the pitch of a smoke detector’s beep. But the full range spans from 250 Hz (a low hum, like a refrigerator) up to 8,000 Hz (a sharp, thin whine).

Beyond ringing, here’s what people commonly report:

People describe it as hearing their own pulse inside their ear, or a rhythmic thump like a washing machine in the distance. It can also resemble a high note from a tuning fork that pulses on and off.

Pulsatile tinnitus has a different origin from the more common kind. It’s essentially the sound of blood flowing through vessels near your ears, and it gets louder when blood moves faster, like during exercise or stress. Because it’s tied to blood flow, pulsatile tinnitus can be a sign of a vascular condition, making it worth bringing up with a doctor rather than dismissing as ordinary ringing.

Clicking and Snapping Sounds

A small number of people hear sharp, repetitive clicking. This type stands apart because it sometimes has a physical, mechanical cause. Tiny muscles inside the ear or in the roof of the mouth can spasm involuntarily, producing a fairly regular clicking pattern. In some cases, this clicking is loud enough that another person, or a doctor using a stethoscope placed near the ear, can actually hear it too. That makes it one of the rare forms of tinnitus that isn’t purely “phantom.” Another unusual variant produces a sound that syncs with breathing rather than heartbeat, caused by the tube connecting the ear to the throat staying too open.

Low-Pitched Roaring and Ménière’s Disease

A deep, low-frequency roaring, sometimes described as sounding like standing near a waterfall, is characteristic of Ménière’s disease. This condition involves fluid buildup in the inner ear and typically brings episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear alongside the roaring tinnitus. The low pitch distinguishes it from the more typical high-pitched ringing. If your tinnitus sounds more like a rumble or roar and comes with dizziness, that pattern points toward something more specific than general tinnitus.

Why Your Brain Creates These Sounds

Tinnitus isn’t sound entering your ear from the outside. It’s your brain generating a signal that wasn’t there before. The trigger is usually some change in the inner ear, whether from noise exposure, age-related hearing loss, or injury. When the ear stops sending certain frequencies to the brain properly, the auditory system compensates by becoming hyperactive. Neurons along the hearing pathway start firing on their own, and the brain interprets that activity as sound.

Normally, emotional processing centers in the brain act as a filter, suppressing low-level neural noise so you don’t notice it. In people with chronic tinnitus, this filtering system doesn’t work as effectively. The result is that the phantom signal gets through and becomes a persistent part of your awareness.
