What Does Fasting for 24 Hours Do to Your Body?

A 24-hour fast pushes your body through a significant metabolic shift: you burn through your stored sugar, switch to burning fat, and trigger a cascade of hormonal changes that affect everything from cell repair to brain function. Most of these changes kick in during the back half of the fast, between hours 12 and 24, which is why a full day without food produces effects you won’t get from simply skipping breakfast.

How Your Body Fuels Itself Over 24 Hours

For the first few hours after your last meal, your body runs on glucose from the food you just ate. Around three to four hours in, blood sugar and insulin levels start dropping, and your liver begins converting its glycogen (stored sugar) into usable glucose to keep you going. Some individuals experienced increases as high as 20,000%. A separate study found growth hormone rose roughly 5-fold in males and 14-fold in females over the same fasting window.

Growth hormone helps preserve lean muscle mass, supports fat metabolism, and plays a role in tissue repair. This surge is one reason fasting doesn’t simply eat away at your muscles the way you might expect. Your body ramps up growth hormone partly to protect protein stores while it shifts to burning fat instead.

Your Brain Gets a Boost

As ketone levels rise during the second half of your fast, your brain gains access to an alternative fuel source that also acts as a signaling molecule. One ketone in particular triggers the production of a protein called BDNF, which strengthens connections between brain cells, supports the formation of new neurons, and plays a central role in memory and learning. Animal and human research consistently links higher BDNF levels to improved cognitive performance.

This is why many people report feeling sharper and more focused during the later hours of a fast, once the initial hunger and irritability pass. The metabolic switch from glucose to ketones doesn’t just keep your brain running. It actively stimulates pathways that help your brain adapt and perform under stress. Researchers describe this as “intermittent metabolic switching,” and it appears to enhance brain resilience over time when fasting is practiced regularly.

Cellular Cleanup Begins

Fasting triggers a recycling process where your cells break down and remove damaged or dysfunctional components. This internal housekeeping becomes more active as fasting continues, though the exact timing in humans isn’t nailed down yet. Animal studies suggest this process ramps up somewhere between 24 and 48 hours of fasting, according to Cleveland Clinic. So at the 24-hour mark, you’re likely at the early edge of this window, with activity increasing the longer the fast continues.

This cleanup process is significant because it clears out misfolded proteins and damaged cellular machinery that can accumulate over time and contribute to aging and disease. Think of it as your cells taking out the trash. When you eat constantly, this process stays relatively suppressed because your body is busy processing incoming nutrients. Fasting gives your cells the downtime to do maintenance work.

Immune Cell Turnover

But the process begins with the signaling changes that start during the first day. Fasting reduced levels of an enzyme called PKA, which acts as a gatekeeper for stem cell regeneration. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and anyone with a history of eating disorders should avoid extended fasts entirely. For most other healthy adults, an occasional 24-hour fast is well tolerated, particularly once you’ve built up to it through shorter fasting windows.
