Female ejaculate is typically a small amount of thick, milky white fluid, though what many people call “cumming” can also involve a much larger gush of thin, clear, watery liquid. These are actually two distinct fluids produced by different parts of the body, and they look noticeably different from each other.
Two Types of Fluid, Two Different Appearances
Research has identified two separate phenomena that often get grouped under the same label. True female ejaculate is a very small amount of thick, whitish fluid released from the Skene’s glands, sometimes called the female prostate. These small glands sit on either side of the urethral opening and swell with blood flow during arousal. The fluid they produce looks milky and has a mucus-like consistency, similar in some ways to diluted male semen. It contains proteins, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA), that are biochemically comparable to components found in male ejaculate.
Squirting fluid looks completely different. It’s thin, watery, and mostly clear with little to no color. In larger amounts, it can soak through sheets and look like someone spilled water on the bed. This fluid comes from the bladder rather than the Skene’s glands, and chemical analysis shows it’s a diluted form of urine containing urea, creatinine, and uric acid. Despite its origin, it typically doesn’t have the strong appearance or smell of regular urine.
How Much Fluid to Expect
The volume varies enormously from person to person. A 2013 study of 320 participants found the amount ranged from roughly 0.3 milliliters (a few drops) to more than 150 milliliters (about two-thirds of a cup). True ejaculate from the Skene’s glands tends to fall on the very low end of that range, sometimes so small in quantity that it goes unnoticed. Squirting, when it happens, accounts for the larger volumes.
Many women experience one, the other, both at the same time, or neither. There’s no “normal” amount, and the volume can change from one experience to the next depending on hydration, arousal level, and individual anatomy.
Color and Consistency Breakdown
- Skene’s gland ejaculate: Thick, milky white, small in volume. Can appear as a creamy spot or a few drops of opaque white fluid.
- Squirting fluid: Thin, watery, mostly clear or very faintly yellow. Released in larger amounts, sometimes in a gush or stream.
- Mixed fluid: When both are released together, the result can look like a slightly cloudy, watery liquid, somewhere between the two extremes.
Regular vaginal lubrication, which increases throughout arousal, is a separate fluid entirely. It’s typically clear and slippery, produced by the vaginal walls themselves. This is often present alongside ejaculate, which can make it harder to distinguish one from the other during sex.
Smell and Taste
Skene’s gland fluid is generally mild and doesn’t have a strong odor. Because squirting fluid is chemically similar to very dilute urine, it can carry a faint hint of that, but most descriptions note it’s close to odorless and doesn’t smell like urine typically does.
The broader taste and smell of the vulval area varies naturally from person to person. Healthy genital fluid can range from slightly sweet to sour, metallic, salty, or musky. Diet, hydration, menstrual cycle phase, and tobacco use all influence these qualities. A strong fishy or unpleasant odor isn’t a normal variation and usually points to an infection like bacterial vaginosis.
Why It Varies So Much
Skene’s glands differ in size from person to person, and some women have glands that are barely detectable on imaging while others have more developed tissue. This anatomical variation explains why some women regularly produce visible ejaculate and others never do. It’s not a matter of arousal level or technique alone; the underlying glandular tissue simply differs.
Hydration plays a role too, particularly for squirting. Since that fluid originates in the bladder, drinking more water beforehand tends to produce a more dilute, clearer liquid. Less hydration can make it slightly more concentrated and faintly yellow, closer in appearance to pale urine. The Skene’s gland ejaculate stays consistently whitish regardless of hydration, since it’s produced by glandular tissue rather than filtered through the kidneys.
