In statistics, “independent” means that one event or variable has no influence on another. If two things are independent, knowing about one gives you zero information about the other. This single idea shows up in several different contexts across statistics, from probability problems to experiment design to choosing the right statistical test. Understanding each context will help you recognize what independence means when you encounter it.
Independent Events in Probability
Two events are independent when the occurrence of one does not change the probability of the other. Flipping a coin and rolling a die are independent: the coin landing on heads tells you nothing about whether the die will show a six. Owning a dog and having an aunt named Matilda are independent. Taking a cab home and finding your favorite movie on cable are independent.
The formal test is straightforward. If events A and B are independent, then the probability of both happening equals the probability of A multiplied by the probability of B:
P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)
For a coin flip and a die roll: the probability of getting heads and rolling a six is 1/2 × 1/6 = 1/12. You can just multiply the individual probabilities because neither event affects the other.
There’s an equivalent way to check using conditional probability. If A and B are independent, then knowing B happened doesn’t change the probability of A:
P(A | B) = P(A)
That vertical bar means “given that.” So this formula says: the probability of A, given that B happened, is exactly the same as the probability of A on its own. If that equality holds, the events are independent.
Dependent Events Look Different
Dependent events are the opposite: one event changes the likelihood of the other. Drawing two cards from a deck without replacing the first is a classic example. Your odds of drawing a heart on the second card depend on what you drew first. If you pulled a heart the first time, there are now fewer hearts left in the deck.
Real-world dependent events are often more intuitive. Not paying your power bill and having your electricity cut off are dependent. Buying a lottery ticket every day for 100 days and eventually winning are dependent, because buying more tickets changes your odds. In each case, one event shifts the probability of the other.
Independence vs. Mutually Exclusive
This is one of the most common mix-ups in introductory statistics. Independent events and mutually exclusive events are not the same thing, and in fact, mutually exclusive events are almost never independent.
Mutually exclusive means two events cannot happen at the same time. Drawing a card that is both entirely red and entirely blue is impossible, so those outcomes are mutually exclusive. The probability of both occurring together is zero.
Here’s why that’s different from independence: if you know that a mutually exclusive event A happened, you immediately know event B did not happen. That means A gives you information about B, which is the exact opposite of independence. When P(A and B) = 0, you can check the multiplication rule. If P(A) × P(B) is anything other than zero (meaning both events are individually possible), then P(A and B) does not equal P(A) × P(B), and the events are dependent.
A concrete example helps. Imagine flipping a coin and rolling a die. Event A is getting heads followed by an even number (2, 4, or 6). Event B is getting heads followed by a 3. These two events can’t happen simultaneously, so they’re mutually exclusive. But P(A and B) = 0, while P(A) × P(B) = 3/12 × 1/12 = 3/144, which is not zero. The multiplication rule fails, so A and B are dependent despite being mutually exclusive.
Independent vs. Dependent Variables
The word “independent” also describes a specific role a variable plays in an experiment or study. An independent variable is the factor a researcher expects will influence an outcome. The dependent variable is the outcome being measured.
If researchers want to know whether vehicle exhaust affects childhood asthma rates, the concentration of exhaust is the independent variable and asthma incidence is the dependent variable. The asthma rate “depends on” the exhaust level, at least in theory. In experiments, the independent variable is what the researcher deliberately manipulates or selects; the dependent variable is what gets measured in response.
This usage is related to, but distinct from, the probability concept. Here, “independent” doesn’t mean “unrelated to the outcome.” It means “this is the input, not the output.” The naming convention can feel counterintuitive at first, but it simply marks which variable is the cause (or suspected cause) and which is the effect.
Independence of Observations
Nearly every common statistical test, from t-tests to regression to ANOVA, assumes that your individual data points are independent of one another. This means the measurement for one subject should not be influenced by or related to the measurement of another subject. If you survey 200 people about their spending habits, each person’s answer should reflect only their own behavior, not be shaped by seeing another participant’s response.
This assumption matters because most statistical tests estimate how much natural variation exists in your data. If observations are secretly linked, the test underestimates that variation and can produce misleadingly confident results.
Independent Samples vs. Paired Samples
When comparing two groups, you need to know whether your samples are independent or paired, because the correct statistical test depends on it.
Two samples are independent when the selection of people in one group has no connection to who ends up in the other group. Randomly assigning 50 patients to a treatment group and 50 different patients to a placebo group creates independent samples.
Samples are paired (also called dependent) when each observation in one group is linked to a specific observation in the other. The most common scenario is “before and after” measurements on the same people. Measuring someone’s blood pressure before and after a medication creates paired data, because both measurements come from the same person. Comparing twins, siblings, or deliberately matched subjects also creates paired data.
Using an independent-samples test on paired data (or vice versa) can give you wrong results. The pairing creates a built-in correlation between measurements that the analysis needs to account for.
Testing Whether Variables Are Independent
Sometimes you don’t know in advance whether two things are independent, and you want the data to tell you. The chi-square test of independence is designed for exactly this situation with categorical data (data sorted into groups or categories rather than measured on a number scale).
The test starts with the assumption that the two variables are independent, then checks whether the observed data deviates from what you’d expect under that assumption. For example, researchers might test whether vaccination status and pneumonia diagnosis are independent. If the data shows a large enough departure from what independence would predict, you reject the assumption and conclude the two variables are related.
This type of test is common in medical research, social science, and market research, anywhere you want to know whether two categorical characteristics are genuinely associated or just appear connected by chance.
