Having a lot of vaginal discharge is usually normal. Everyone produces different amounts, and several common factors like ovulation, hormonal birth control, pregnancy, and sexual arousal can increase volume significantly. The key isn’t how much discharge you have, but whether its color, smell, or texture has changed from what’s typical for you.
Healthy discharge is clear, milky white, or off-white with a mild odor or no odor at all. If your discharge fits that description but there’s simply more of it than usual, the explanation is almost always hormonal. If the discharge has changed color, consistency, or smell, or comes with itching, burning, or pain, something else may be going on.
How Your Cycle Changes Discharge Volume
Your menstrual cycle is the most common reason discharge increases. Estrogen levels rise in the first half of your cycle, and discharge follows. Right after your period ends, you’ll notice very little, maybe some dry or tacky white discharge. Over the next several days it becomes creamier and wetter, with a yogurt-like consistency.
Around days 10 to 14 of a 28-day cycle, as you approach ovulation, discharge peaks. It becomes slippery, stretchy, and resembles raw egg whites. This is your most fertile window, and the wet, slippery texture helps sperm travel. You’ll typically have three or four days of this higher-volume, egg-white discharge. After ovulation, progesterone takes over and discharge dries up quickly, staying thick and minimal until your next period.
So if you’ve noticed more discharge mid-cycle, that’s your body doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
Pregnancy and Hormonal Causes
Increased discharge is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. This pregnancy-related discharge, called leukorrhea, is thin, clear or milky white, and either odorless or very mild. It starts early and progressively increases in amount throughout the entire pregnancy as hormone levels climb.
Normal pregnancy discharge is watery, leaves only a slight stain, and has no odor. If pregnancy discharge turns yellowish or greenish, soaks through your clothes, or develops a foul smell, that points to an infection rather than normal hormonal changes. Infections during pregnancy can be associated with complications, so any shift in color or odor is worth getting checked.
Hormonal birth control (the pill, patch, or ring) can also alter discharge. These methods change estrogen levels, which affects both lubrication and the vaginal microbiome. Some people notice more discharge, others notice dryness. Both are common responses to hormonal shifts.
When Increased Discharge Signals an Infection
A healthy vagina maintains a pH between 3.8 and 4.5. Beneficial bacteria called lactobacilli keep it acidic, which prevents overgrowth of harmful organisms. When something disrupts that balance, infections can develop, and increased or changed discharge is often the first sign.
Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection. The hallmark is an off-white, gray, or greenish discharge with a distinct “fishy” smell, especially noticeable after sex. BV happens when harmful bacteria outgrow the protective lactobacilli, raising vaginal pH above the normal range. The discharge itself is usually thin rather than thick, and the volume may increase noticeably. Some people also experience mild irritation, but the fishy odor is the defining feature.
Yeast Infections
Yeast infections produce a different kind of discharge: thick, white, and clumpy, often described as having a cottage cheese texture. It usually comes with itching or burning. That said, only about 50% of yeast infections actually produce the classic clumpy discharge. Some cause a creamier, yellowish discharge, and others don’t change discharge at all, just cause irritation. A strange or strong smell is common but different from the fishy odor of BV.
Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause a clear, white, yellowish, or greenish discharge that may be thin or frothy, often with a fishy smell. It can look similar to BV, which is one reason a proper evaluation matters when discharge changes. Trichomoniasis often comes with additional irritation, burning, or discomfort during urination.
How Medications Affect Discharge
Antibiotics are a common and underappreciated trigger. While they kill the bacteria causing your infection (a sinus infection, urinary tract infection, or anything else), they also wipe out the protective lactobacilli in the vagina. This can shift the pH balance and lead to changes in discharge, itching, or a secondary yeast infection or BV. If you notice more discharge during or after a course of antibiotics, the medication has likely disrupted your vaginal flora. The balance typically restores itself, but some people find they develop a yeast infection that needs separate treatment.
What To Pay Attention To
Since everyone’s baseline is different, tracking what’s normal for you is more useful than comparing to a standard. The changes worth noting are:
- Color shifts: Discharge that turns gray, green, or bright yellow suggests an infection. Healthy discharge is clear, white, or off-white.
- Odor changes: A fishy smell, especially after sex, points toward BV or trichomoniasis. A mild odor is normal, but strong or foul-smelling discharge is not.
- Texture changes: Thick, cottage-cheese-like clumps suggest yeast. Thin, watery, grayish discharge suggests BV.
- Accompanying symptoms: Itching, burning, vaginal pain, pain during urination, or fever alongside increased discharge all suggest something beyond normal hormonal variation.
Your vaginal pH naturally rises slightly just before your period and after menopause, which can make you temporarily more susceptible to infections during those times. If you notice a pattern of discharge changes at specific points in your cycle, that context helps explain what’s happening.
More discharge on its own, without any change in color, smell, or texture and without itching or pain, is rarely a problem. It usually reflects where you are in your cycle, a medication you’re taking, or a hormonal shift like early pregnancy or a new birth control method.
