What Does Pausing Hinge Do to Matches and Likes?

Pausing your Hinge account stops your profile from being shown to new people. You keep all your existing matches and conversations, and you can unpause at any time with a single tap. It’s essentially a way to go invisible in the Discover feed without losing anything you’ve already built on the app.

What Happens When You Pause

The pause feature does one core thing: it pulls your profile out of circulation. New users won’t see you in their Discover feed, which means you won’t receive new likes or comments on your prompts and photos. Think of it as taking your profile offline while keeping your account intact.

What doesn’t change is your ability to message. All your existing matches stay in place, and you can continue chatting with anyone you’ve already connected with. Your conversation history, match list, and profile content all remain exactly as they were. Nothing gets deleted or reset.

How to Pause and Unpause

To pause, open the Hinge app and tap your photo icon on the far right of the navigation bar. Then tap the gear icon to open Settings, and toggle the Pause switch to the on position. That’s it.

To come back, you have two options. You can go back into Settings and toggle the Pause switch off, or you can tap “Unpause Profile” directly on your Discover screen. Either way, your profile goes back into rotation immediately.

Pausing vs. Deleting Your Account

These two options serve very different purposes. Pausing is temporary and reversible. Your profile, matches, conversations, and preferences all stay saved. You’re just stepping away from new discovery.

Deleting your account, on the other hand, is permanent. It wipes your profile, removes all your matches and message history, and you’d need to start completely from scratch if you ever wanted to use Hinge again. If you’re taking a break for a vacation, focusing on someone you’re already talking to, or just feeling overwhelmed by the app, pausing is the right choice. Deleting makes sense only if you’re done with the platform entirely.

What to Know About Subscriptions

Pausing your account does not pause your billing. If you’re paying for Hinge+ or HingeX, your subscription continues to renew on its normal schedule even while your profile is paused. You’ll want to manage your subscription separately through your phone’s app store if you don’t want to keep paying during a break. Simply pausing the profile won’t stop charges.

Common Reasons to Pause

Most people pause for practical reasons: they’re going on vacation, they want to focus on a few promising matches without new distractions, or they’re just burnt out on swiping. Pausing lets you step back without the commitment of starting over. Some people also pause when they begin exclusively dating someone but aren’t quite ready to delete the app, keeping it as a low-pressure safety net.

There’s no time limit on how long you can stay paused. Whether it’s a weekend or six months, your account will be waiting when you toggle back on.
