What Does Pink Salt Really Do to Your Body?

Pink Himalayan salt affects your body almost identically to regular table salt. It is at least 98% sodium chloride, and while it does contain trace minerals that give it its distinctive color, the amounts are too small to produce meaningful health effects at normal serving sizes. The real impact of pink salt on your body comes from its sodium content, which raises blood pressure and affects fluid balance the same way any other salt does.

What’s Actually in Pink Salt

Pink Himalayan salt is mined from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan. Its color comes primarily from iron, which is present at roughly 60 times the concentration found in the white crystals from the same mine. Beyond sodium and chloride, analysis has detected trace amounts of magnesium, potassium, calcium, silicon, titanium, chromium, and zinc.

Those trace minerals sound impressive listed out, but context matters. They exist in parts per million. You would need to consume a dangerously high amount of pink salt to get a nutritionally relevant dose of any mineral other than sodium. At a normal intake of a teaspoon or less per day, the magnesium, potassium, and iron you get from pink salt are negligible compared to what a single serving of vegetables or meat provides. The Cleveland Clinic puts it plainly: the supposed mineral benefits aren’t based on real science.

Sodium Is Sodium

The most important thing pink salt does to your body is deliver sodium. Sodium pulls water into your bloodstream, increasing blood volume and raising blood pressure. Over time, elevated blood pressure damages blood vessels and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. This is true regardless of which type of salt you use.

As a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic has noted, “salt is salt, it is all the same thing.” Whether it’s pink, white, or gray, your cardiovascular system can’t tell the difference. The World Health Organization recommends adults consume less than 2,000 milligrams of sodium per day, which works out to just under one teaspoon of any salt. Pink salt doesn’t earn you a higher limit.

People sometimes use more pink salt than they would table salt because the coarser crystals seem less concentrated, or because the “natural” label creates a false sense of safety. If anything, this can lead to higher sodium intake than you’d get from measured amounts of fine table salt.

The Iodine Gap

One genuinely important difference between pink salt and standard table salt works against pink salt. Table salt is fortified with iodine, a mineral your thyroid needs to regulate metabolism, energy, and brain development. This fortification program is one of the most successful public health interventions in history, dramatically reducing goiter and other iodine deficiency disorders worldwide.

Pink Himalayan salt is not iodized. It does not naturally contain significant amounts of iodine. If you swap out iodized table salt entirely for pink salt and you don’t eat much seafood, dairy, or eggs, you could gradually develop an iodine shortfall. This is especially relevant for pregnant women, whose iodine needs are higher.

Claims That Don’t Hold Up

Pink salt has been marketed with a long list of health claims: detoxification, pH balancing, improved hydration, better sleep, stronger bones. Researchers at McGill University’s Office for Science and Society have reviewed these claims and concluded that they “don’t survive even casual scientific scrutiny.” Your blood pH is tightly regulated by your kidneys and lungs. No salt, pink or otherwise, meaningfully shifts it. And there is no mechanism by which trace minerals at parts-per-million concentrations could “detoxify” anything.

Sole water, a trend involving dissolving pink salt in water until fully saturated and drinking a small amount daily, rests on the same shaky foundation. The Cleveland Clinic describes it as a quick fix whose supposed benefits aren’t supported by real evidence. What you’re drinking is very salty water, and the main thing it does is add sodium to your diet.

Salt Therapy and Breathing

A separate use of pink salt involves halotherapy, where a machine grinds salt into fine particles and disperses them into the air of an enclosed room. Some small studies suggest this may have mild anti-inflammatory effects in the airways and help loosen mucus in people with respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, or sinus infections. You might cough more during or after a session as mucus moves out of your lungs.

The evidence here is still limited and inconsistent. Salt rooms are generally considered low risk for most people, but they aren’t a replacement for inhalers or prescribed respiratory treatments. The effects, if real, appear to be modest and temporary.

How to Think About Pink Salt

If you prefer the taste or texture of pink salt for cooking, there’s no harm in using it, as long as you treat it with the same restraint you’d apply to any salt. It won’t hurt you beyond what regular salt does, and it won’t help you in ways regular salt can’t. The trace minerals are real but irrelevant at normal doses. The sodium is real and relevant at any dose.

The one practical adjustment worth making: if pink salt is your only salt, consider whether you’re getting enough iodine from other foods. Seafood, dairy products, and eggs are reliable sources. If those aren’t regular parts of your diet, sticking with iodized table salt for at least some of your cooking is a simple way to cover that gap.
