What Does Radon Do to Your Body Over Time?

Radon damages your body by releasing tiny radioactive particles that tear into the DNA of your lung cells, causing mutations that can lead to lung cancer. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, and roughly 21,000 Americans die from radon-related lung cancer each year. The danger is invisible: radon is an odorless, colorless gas that seeps into homes from the ground, and it produces zero symptoms until cancer has already developed, often decades later.

How Radon Damages Your Cells

Radon itself is a gas you inhale and exhale. The real problem is what happens as radon breaks down inside your lungs. As it decays, it produces solid radioactive particles called “progeny” that stick to the lining of your airways. These particles emit alpha radiation, a type of radiation that is heavy and highly charged.

When alpha particles hit the DNA inside a lung cell, they don’t just nick one strand. Because of their size and energy, they create clusters of damage, multiple breaks packed within a tiny stretch of the DNA helix. Your cells have repair machinery for simple, isolated DNA breaks, but these densely clustered injuries are far harder to fix correctly. The result is a much higher rate of permanent mutations per unit of radiation compared to lighter forms like X-rays. Over years of exposure, those accumulated mutations can push a cell toward uncontrolled growth: cancer.

The damage concentrates in specific spots. Radon progeny particles tend to collect at the branching points of your airways, the junctions where bronchial tubes split into smaller passages. These junctions also happen to have slower mucus clearance, meaning the radioactive particles sit there longer and deliver a higher local dose of radiation than the rest of your lung tissue receives.

Why There Are No Warning Signs

Radon exposure produces no immediate symptoms. No cough, no irritation, no shortness of breath. The mutations accumulate silently over years, and by the time lung cancer symptoms appear (persistent cough, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, coughing up blood), the disease has often progressed to a later stage. The average time between the start of significant radon exposure and a lung cancer diagnosis is roughly 19 years for smokers, and can be even longer for nonsmokers. This long latency period is precisely why radon is so dangerous: nothing feels wrong until something very serious already is.

The Smoking Connection

Radon is dangerous on its own, but it becomes dramatically more dangerous if you smoke. The two risks don’t just add together; they multiply. The EPA estimates that among 1,000 smokers exposed to the agency’s action level of 4 pCi/L over a lifetime, about 62 would develop lung cancer. Among 1,000 nonsmokers at the same level, about 7 would.

At higher concentrations the gap widens further. At 20 pCi/L, roughly 260 out of 1,000 smokers could develop lung cancer, compared to 36 out of 1,000 nonsmokers. Even at lower levels, the pattern holds: a smoker exposed to just 1.3 pCi/L (the average indoor concentration in the U.S.) has a 20-in-1,000 chance of lung cancer, while a nonsmoker at the same level has a 2-in-1,000 chance. In short, smoking amplifies the damage radon does to your lungs by roughly tenfold.

Risks Beyond the Lungs

Lung cancer gets the most attention, but radon may affect other organs too. When radon dissolves in groundwater and you drink it, your stomach lining is exposed to the same type of alpha radiation. A CDC-affiliated study in North Carolina found that people exposed to higher levels of radon in groundwater had about a 24% increase in the odds of stomach cancer and a 13% increase in the odds of lung cancer (from swallowed water releasing radon gas that is then inhaled). The stomach cancer risk is smaller and less studied than the lung cancer risk, but it adds another reason to test well water if your home relies on a private well.

Why Children Face Greater Risk

Children are more vulnerable to radon than adults for several reasons. Their lungs are smaller, so the same concentration of radon delivers a higher dose of radiation per unit of tissue. They also breathe faster than adults, pulling in more radon progeny with each minute. On top of that, children’s cells are dividing more rapidly as they grow, and rapidly dividing cells are more susceptible to mutations from radiation damage.

Perhaps the most important factor is time. A child exposed to elevated radon has decades more life ahead in which a radiation-induced mutation could eventually become cancer. Homes, daycares, and schools are the primary exposure settings for kids, since children spend the majority of their day indoors in these spaces.

How Much Radon Is Too Much

There is no known safe level of radon exposure. Any amount carries some risk. That said, the EPA sets a practical action level at 4 pCi/L: if your home tests at or above this number, the agency recommends installing a radon mitigation system. The EPA also recommends considering mitigation for levels between 2 and 4 pCi/L, particularly if you have risk factors like smoking or young children in the home.

About 1 in 15 U.S. homes has radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L. Radon concentrations vary enormously by geography, soil type, and home construction, so the only way to know your level is to test. Short-term test kits are inexpensive and widely available at hardware stores, and long-term tests give a more accurate picture of your year-round exposure.

What Mitigation Looks Like

If your home tests high, the most common fix is a sub-slab depressurization system. A contractor installs a pipe through your foundation that draws radon-laden air from beneath the house and vents it above the roofline, where it disperses harmlessly outdoors. A small fan keeps the system running continuously. Most installations take less than a day, and they typically reduce indoor radon levels by 80% to 99%. For homes with well water containing dissolved radon, aeration or activated carbon treatment systems can reduce radon before it enters your tap.

Because radon damage is cumulative and irreversible, reducing your exposure at any point lowers your future risk. Even if you’ve lived in a high-radon home for years, fixing the problem now means fewer mutations accumulating from this point forward.
