Tail rot on a bearded dragon shows up as a darkening of the tail tip that turns black around the entire circumference, feels mushy to the touch, and looks shriveled. Most bearded dragons naturally have some darker coloring on the top surface of their tail tip, which can cause confusion. The key difference is that tail rot causes the blackening to wrap all the way around the tail, not just sit on top.
What Tail Rot Actually Looks Like
In the earliest stage, you’ll notice the very tip of the tail darkening beyond its normal color. The skin may look dry, tight, or slightly discolored compared to the rest of the tail. This is easy to miss, especially on dragons that already have darker tail tips.
As it progresses, the affected area turns fully black and begins to shrivel. The tissue feels soft and mushy rather than firm. Eventually, the dead section dries out and hardens, almost like a twig. The blackened area can slowly creep further up the tail over days or weeks if left untreated. In advanced cases, the infection spreads beyond the tail into surrounding body areas, which becomes a serious, potentially fatal problem.
Tail Rot vs. Stuck Shed
Stuck shed is the most common thing mistaken for tail rot. During a normal shed cycle, old skin can cling to the tail tip and look gray, flaky, or constricted. The difference is that stuck shed sits on the surface like a dry sleeve, while tail rot changes the tissue underneath. Stuck shed usually peels or loosens with a warm soak. Tail rot does not improve with soaking alone.
One practical test is feeling the area gently. A tail with stuck shed still feels firm and your dragon reacts normally when you touch it. A tail with advancing rot often feels mushy, and the tissue itself is discolored rather than just the skin on top. That said, stuck shed left untreated can actually cause tail rot. Layers of retained skin can form tight rings around the tail that cut off blood flow, eventually killing the tissue beyond the constriction point. So stuck shed and tail rot aren’t always separate problems; one can lead directly to the other.
What Causes It
Tail rot starts when the tail tissue loses blood supply or gets injured, and bacteria move into the damaged area. The most common triggers include:
- Retained shed: Successive layers of unshed skin tighten around the tail tip, strangling blood flow until the tissue dies.
- Physical injury: Bites from cage mates, getting the tail caught in a door or decor, or repeatedly whipping the tail against enclosure glass can all damage tissue enough for infection to set in.
- Poor humidity levels: Bearded dragons need relatively low humidity, around 30 to 40 percent. Humidity that’s too high encourages bacterial and fungal growth on the skin. Humidity that’s too low makes shedding more difficult, increasing the risk of constriction from retained skin.
The underlying process is straightforward: tissue loses its blood supply, dies, and then bacteria colonize the dead tissue. Once infection is established, it can spread further up the tail and, in severe cases, enter the bloodstream. Bone infection in the tail is also possible if the rot goes deep enough.
How Quickly It Spreads
Tail rot doesn’t happen overnight, but it can progress faster than many owners expect. A small dark spot at the tip can expand noticeably within a week or two. The speed depends on whether the cause is still present. If a constricting band of shed is still choking the tail, or if the enclosure conditions are promoting bacterial growth, the rot advances more quickly. Once the tissue dies and dries out, the boundary between dead and living tissue becomes a site where infection can keep pushing inward.
What You Can Do About It
Tail rot involves dead tissue, and dead tissue does not regenerate. No amount of soaking or topical treatment will bring blackened, necrotic tail back to life. The realistic goal of any at-home care is to keep infection from spreading while you get veterinary help.
Warm betadine soaks and a thin layer of antibiotic ointment on the affected area are commonly used as temporary measures. These can help manage surface bacteria, but they won’t reverse the damage. In most cases, a reptile veterinarian will recommend amputating the dead portion of the tail. Bearded dragons tolerate tail amputation well and live completely normal lives afterward. The tail does not grow back, but it doesn’t need to.
If you notice the blackening creeping higher up the tail, the tissue becoming increasingly mushy, or your dragon becoming lethargic and refusing food, the infection may be spreading systemically. At that point, the situation becomes urgent.
Preventing Tail Rot
Most cases are preventable with basic husbandry. Keep humidity between 30 and 40 percent, measured with a hygrometer at the cool end of the enclosure. If readings are consistently higher, improve ventilation. Maintain a basking zone between 38 and 42°C (100 to 108°F), which helps your dragon shed cleanly.
Check the tail tip and toes during every shed cycle. If you see retained skin forming a ring, a lukewarm soak and gentle removal with a damp cloth can prevent the constriction that leads to tissue death. Avoid housing multiple dragons together, since bites to tails and toes are a common source of injury. And keep enclosure decor free of sharp edges or tight gaps where a tail could get pinched or caught.
