What Does the Lock With the Arrow Around It Mean?

The lock with a circular arrow around it is the screen rotation lock icon. It appears on iPhones, iPads, and Android devices to tell you that your screen is locked in one orientation, usually portrait (upright), and won’t rotate when you turn the device sideways. You’ll typically spot it in the status bar at the top of your screen or in Control Center.

What the Icon Looks Like on Different Devices

On iPhones and iPads, the icon is a small padlock with a curved arrow circling around it. When you activate it, the icon appears in your status bar (on older iPhones with a Home button) or inside Control Center only (on Face ID models, where status bar space is limited). Inside Control Center, the button is highlighted in white when the lock is turned on.

On Samsung Galaxy phones and other Android devices, the icons work a bit differently. You’ll see three possible states in your quick settings panel: Auto Rotate, Portrait, and Landscape. The Auto Rotate icon looks like a small phone surrounded by two arrows and glows blue or white when active. The Portrait and Landscape lock icons both show a lock symbol and appear gray when enabled. This color difference trips people up: on Samsung devices, a gray icon means the lock is on, while a colored icon means auto-rotate is on.

How to Turn It On and Off

On iPhones with Face ID, swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen to open Control Center. On iPhones with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of any screen. You’ll see the lock-with-arrow icon among the toggles. Tap it once to lock your screen in portrait mode; tap it again to unlock rotation. The button turns white when the lock is active.

On iPads, the process is the same: swipe down from the top-right corner. Some older iPads also have a physical side switch that can be set to control rotation lock. If you have one, go to Settings, then General, and look for “Use Side Switch To” to choose whether it controls rotation lock or mute.

On Android, pull down from the top of your screen to access quick settings. Look for the Auto Rotate tile and tap it to toggle between auto-rotation and a locked orientation.

Why Your Screen Still Won’t Rotate

If you’ve turned off the rotation lock but your screen still won’t turn sideways, the app itself may be the problem. Some apps are designed to work only in portrait mode and will ignore your rotation settings entirely. Instagram is a well-known example. To test whether it’s an app issue or a device issue, open a built-in app like Calculator or Safari, which both support landscape mode, and try rotating there.

If those apps won’t rotate either, try restarting your phone. A stuck gyroscope sensor or a minor software glitch can prevent rotation from working even when the lock icon is off. A restart resolves this in most cases.

Common Reasons It Turns On by Accident

Many people discover this icon after accidentally swiping into Control Center and tapping the button without realizing it. This happens frequently while scrolling, playing games, or handing the phone to a child. If your screen suddenly stops rotating and you see the lock icon, that’s almost certainly what happened. One tap in Control Center will fix it.

On older iPads with a side switch, bumping the switch while pulling the device out of a case is another common culprit. If rotation stops working and you can’t find the software toggle, check the side of your iPad first.
