It also improves blood sugar regulation, reduces blood pressure, and burns between 300 and 500 calories depending on your weight and pace. The 10,000 number itself started as a marketing slogan for a Japanese pedometer in 1965, but decades of research have since confirmed that getting close to that target delivers real, measurable health benefits.
How It Affects Your Lifespan
The relationship between daily steps and mortality isn’t all-or-nothing. In the Lancet meta-analysis, people averaging about 5,800 steps a day already had a 40% lower risk of death compared to those walking around 3,500. Climbing to roughly 7,800 steps dropped risk by 45%, and reaching about 10,900 steps brought a 53% reduction. The benefits are real at every level, but they don’t keep scaling forever.
Age matters here. For adults 60 and older, the mortality benefit plateaus somewhere between 6,000 and 8,000 steps a day. For adults under 60, the curve keeps bending favorably up to 8,000 to 10,000 steps before leveling off. So if you’re younger, pushing toward 10,000 does give you a meaningful edge. If you’re older, you can capture most of the longevity benefit at a lower number.
Heart Disease and Blood Pressure
A large study using UK Biobank data on over 72,000 people found that 9,000 to 10,000 daily steps lowered cardiovascular disease risk by 21% and mortality risk by 39%, even among people who were otherwise highly sedentary. Going from 3,500 to 5,800 steps captures roughly half the mortality and cardiovascular benefit.
