What Does Water Actually Do for the Body?

Water is the single most abundant substance in your body, making up roughly 60% of your total weight. It plays a role in virtually every biological process, from carrying nutrients into cells to cushioning your joints to keeping your body temperature stable. Here’s what water actually does once it’s inside you.

How Much Water Is in Your Body

Your organs aren’t solid masses of tissue. They’re mostly water. Your lungs are about 83% water, your brain and heart are each about 73%, and your muscles and kidneys come in around 79%. Even your bones contain water. This isn’t just filler. Water is the medium that makes cellular chemistry possible: dissolving minerals, transporting molecules, and providing the environment where your cells carry out their basic functions.

Carrying Nutrients In, Flushing Waste Out

Water acts as the body’s delivery system. When you eat, your digestive system breaks food down into molecules small enough to dissolve in water-based fluids. Those dissolved nutrients, along with oxygen, travel through your bloodstream (which is mostly water) to reach every cell in your body. Without enough water, this transport slows down.

The removal side is just as important. Your kidneys filter your entire blood supply many times a day. During filtration, water carries smaller molecules and waste products through tiny structures called glomeruli, then through a series of tubes where your body reclaims almost all the water along with useful minerals and nutrients. What’s left, the waste your cells have produced, exits as urine. Your kidneys also use this process to maintain the right balance of sodium, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus in your blood. Without adequate water, your kidneys can’t filter efficiently, and waste products build up.

Temperature Regulation

Your body maintains a core temperature around 98.6°F (37°C), and water is central to that process. When you exercise, spend time in the sun, or run a fever, your body produces sweat, which is mostly water with small amounts of sodium and chloride. The sweat reaches your skin’s surface and evaporates, and that phase change from liquid to gas pulls heat away from your skin and the tissue underneath. This is your primary cooling mechanism.

Most of this work is done by eccrine sweat glands, which are spread across nearly your entire body. They produce the light, watery sweat responsible for thermoregulation. If you’re dehydrated, your body has less fluid available for sweating, which means less evaporative cooling and a higher risk of overheating, especially during physical activity.

Joint Lubrication and Organ Protection

Your joints don’t operate bone-on-bone. They’re filled with synovial fluid, a thick, slippery substance your body makes from blood plasma. It has a consistency similar to egg whites. Synovial fluid sits inside a special membrane at joints where two bones move past each other, reducing friction and cushioning the space between them so they don’t grind together when you walk, bend, or lift. Water is a key component of this fluid, and staying hydrated helps your body keep producing it.

Water also cushions your brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid, which is largely water, surrounds these structures and acts as a shock absorber, protecting them from sudden impacts. Your eyes similarly depend on water-based fluids to maintain their shape and function.

Skin Hydration

Drinking more water does appear to improve skin hydration, and not just at the surface. Research on young women found that daily water intake had a statistically significant effect on skin hydration measurements. Participants who increased their water consumption showed higher hydration levels in both surface and deeper skin layers. They also reported less skin dryness and roughness and perceived their skin as more elastic. The effect was meaningful enough to show up on clinical measurement tools, not just in how participants felt.

That said, water intake is one factor among many. Physical activity, humidity, skincare products, and diet all influence how hydrated your skin looks and feels. But the baseline contribution of simply drinking enough water is real and measurable.

What Happens When You Don’t Get Enough

You don’t need to be severely dehydrated to feel the effects. Losing just 2% of your body weight in fluid (about 3 pounds for a 150-pound person) is enough to noticeably impair both physical and mental performance. At that level, aerobic capacity drops, cognitive function declines, and your heart rate and body temperature rise higher than they would if you were properly hydrated. During exercise, this combination increases the risk of heat illness. The impairments get progressively worse as dehydration deepens.

Milder dehydration, before you hit that 2% threshold, can still cause headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and dry mouth. Thirst is a useful signal but not a perfect one. By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be slightly behind on fluids.

How Much You Actually Need

The commonly cited “eight glasses a day” rule is a rough estimate, and actual needs vary. Research suggests the average healthy adult needs about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) to 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of total fluid per day, with the higher end applying to men and the lower end to women. That total includes all fluid sources: plain water, coffee, tea, milk, and the water content in foods like fruits, soups, and vegetables. Most people get about 20% of their daily water from food alone.

Your needs increase with exercise, hot or humid weather, illness (especially fever, vomiting, or diarrhea), and pregnancy or breastfeeding. Altitude can also increase fluid loss. The simplest way to gauge your hydration is urine color: pale yellow generally means you’re well hydrated, while dark yellow or amber suggests you need more fluid.
