Your IQ score is a standardized measure of how your cognitive abilities compare to the general population, with 100 as the exact average. It doesn’t measure everything about your intelligence, but it does reflect specific mental skills like reasoning, memory, and problem-solving speed. Understanding what the number means, what it predicts, and what it leaves out can help you put your score in perspective.
How IQ Scores Are Distributed
IQ scores follow a bell curve, with most people clustered near the middle. The average is set at 100, and a standard deviation is about 15 points. That means roughly 68% of people score between 85 and 115. About 95% fall between 70 and 130. Scores at either extreme are rare: only about 2% of people score above 130, and about 2% score below 70.
Here’s how scores are generally categorized:
- Below 70: significantly below average, often used as one criterion for intellectual disability
- 70 to 85: below average
- 85 to 115: average range
- 115 to 129: above average
- 130 and above: gifted range, two standard deviations above the mean
These categories matter most in clinical and educational settings. A score of 130 or higher is the traditional psychometric cutoff for giftedness, though some frameworks start as low as 120 for “moderately gifted” or “high-potential” designations. On the other end, a score below 70, combined with difficulties in everyday functioning, is one of the criteria clinicians use when evaluating intellectual disability.
What an IQ Test Actually Measures
IQ tests don’t ask a single type of question. The most widely used test for adults, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (now in its fourth edition), breaks cognitive ability into four broad areas. Verbal comprehension covers vocabulary, general knowledge, and abstract verbal reasoning. Perceptual reasoning tests your ability to analyze visual patterns, solve puzzles with blocks, and reason through matrices. Working memory measures how well you hold and manipulate information in your head, like repeating number sequences or doing mental arithmetic. Processing speed tracks how quickly and accurately you can scan symbols and match them.
Each of these areas produces its own score, and they’re combined into a full-scale IQ. This means two people with the same overall IQ can have very different cognitive profiles. One person might excel at verbal tasks but struggle with processing speed, while another shows the opposite pattern. The full-scale number is a useful summary, but the individual scores often tell a more interesting story about how someone actually thinks.
What IQ Predicts (and How Well)
IQ scores correlate moderately well with academic performance, with a correlation of about 0.5. In practical terms, that means IQ explains roughly 25% of the variation in school achievement. It’s a meaningful predictor, but it leaves the majority of academic success unexplained by factors like motivation, study habits, family support, and school quality.
The link between IQ and career outcomes follows a similar pattern. IQ correlates with occupational level and income at roughly the same strength (around 0.5), partly because school achievement determines what jobs people can access in the first place. Higher scores are associated with entry into more complex professions, but once you’re in a given field, the differences between individuals narrow. A 10-point IQ gap between two software engineers tells you far less than a 10-point gap between the general population averages of two very different occupations.
It’s worth being honest about what that 0.5 correlation means: IQ is one of the better single predictors social scientists have found for academic and career outcomes, but “best single predictor” still leaves most of the picture unexplained.
What IQ Doesn’t Capture
Standard IQ tests measure a specific slice of cognitive ability. They don’t assess emotional intelligence, the set of skills involved in recognizing emotions, managing your own reactions, and navigating social situations. Research consistently finds no significant correlation between IQ scores and emotional intelligence scores. You can be exceptionally sharp on a reasoning test and still struggle to read a room.
Creativity is another blind spot. Studies have found essentially no direct relationship between IQ and emotional creativity, which involves generating novel and effective emotional responses. Broader creative achievement depends on personality traits like openness, persistence, and willingness to take risks, none of which show up on an IQ test. Practical intelligence, the kind of street smarts that help you solve real-world problems, is also largely invisible to standardized testing.
This isn’t a flaw in the test so much as a boundary. IQ was designed to measure analytical and reasoning abilities. Treating it as a complete picture of someone’s mental capacity overstates what it was built to do.
Nature, Nurture, and How IQ Changes
Genetics play a substantial role in IQ, but that role grows over time. A study of 11,000 twin pairs across four countries found that heritability of general cognitive ability rises linearly from about 41% in childhood (around age 9) to 55% in adolescence (age 12) to 66% in young adulthood (age 17). This is somewhat counterintuitive. You might expect environment to matter more as people age and accumulate different experiences, but what actually happens is that people increasingly seek out environments that match their genetic tendencies, amplifying inherited differences.
That still leaves a large portion of the variation shaped by environment, especially in childhood. Lead exposure is one of the most well-documented environmental drags on cognitive development. An international pooled analysis of children found that even low-level lead exposure, increasing blood lead from about 1 to 10 micrograms per deciliter (levels once considered safe), was associated with a 7.4-point IQ reduction. The damage is steepest at the lowest exposure levels: the first small increases in lead cause more harm per unit than larger increases at higher levels. Nutrition, access to education, and the richness of early-childhood stimulation all influence scores as well.
Scores Are Shifting Over Time
Population-level IQ scores aren’t fixed. For most of the 20th century, average scores rose by about 3 points per decade in industrialized countries, a trend known as the Flynn effect. Better nutrition, more schooling, reduced childhood disease, and greater familiarity with abstract thinking all likely contributed.
That trend has recently reversed in many wealthy nations. The most current data shows that economically developed countries are now experiencing flat or slightly declining average scores, while developing countries are still gaining. Researchers describe this as a “great convergence,” with global IQ gaps shrinking but still substantial (as large as 19 points between regions on international achievement tests as of 2018). The takeaway is that IQ scores reflect real cognitive differences between individuals, but population averages respond to broad environmental changes in ways that remind us these scores aren’t purely innate.
How to Think About Your Own Score
If you’ve taken a professionally administered IQ test, your score tells you where your analytical reasoning, memory, and processing speed fall relative to the population. It’s a useful data point, especially if you’re trying to understand learning differences or qualify for specific programs. If your score came from an online quiz, it’s almost certainly unreliable. Proper IQ testing takes one to two hours with a trained examiner and uses carefully normed subtests.
Your score can shift somewhat depending on when you take the test, your physical and mental state on testing day, and which version of the test is used. Retests typically produce scores within about 5 points of each other, but larger swings are possible, especially in children whose brains are still developing rapidly. A single number taken on a single day is a snapshot, not a permanent label.
Perhaps most importantly, IQ is one axis of human ability among many. It captures certain reasoning skills well and says nothing about discipline, curiosity, empathy, creativity, or the ability to collaborate with others. People with average IQ scores build remarkable careers and lives every day, and people with very high scores sometimes don’t. The number is real and meaningful, but it’s not a ceiling or a destiny.
