Your resting heart rate is one of the simplest windows into your cardiovascular health. For most adults, a normal resting heart rate falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), measured while sitting or lying down but awake. Where you land within that range, and how that number changes over time, can reveal how efficiently your heart pumps blood, how well your nervous system is balanced, and even how your long-term survival odds stack up.
What “Normal” Looks Like by Age
The 60 to 100 bpm range applies to adults and adolescents age 13 and older. Children run faster: a newborn’s heart beats 100 to 205 times per minute, a toddler’s 98 to 140, and a school-age child’s 75 to 118. These ranges reflect the fact that smaller hearts hold less blood per beat, so they need to pump more frequently to meet the body’s demands. By adolescence the heart is large and strong enough to settle into the adult range.
Athletes are a notable exception. Endurance training physically remodels the heart’s pacemaker cells, allowing the heart to push out more blood with each beat. That means it can maintain the same output at a slower pace. Up to 80% of endurance athletes develop resting rates below 60 bpm, and a study of 465 endurance athletes found that 38% had a minimum heart rate at or below 40 bpm on a 24-hour monitor. In this group, rates that low are well tolerated and typically a sign of fitness rather than disease.
How Your Heart’s Efficiency Shows Up
Think of resting heart rate as a report card on how hard your heart has to work at baseline. A heart that fills well and contracts strongly ejects a large volume of blood with each beat. It can afford to beat slowly and still deliver everything your tissues need. A heart that moves less blood per beat has to compensate by beating faster.
This is why aerobic fitness tends to lower your resting rate. Regular cardio training increases the volume of blood the heart can hold and eject, so each beat does more work. The result is a slower, more efficient rhythm at rest. Conversely, when your resting rate creeps upward without an obvious explanation, it can signal that the heart is working harder than it should to keep up.
What a High Resting Heart Rate Signals
A consistently elevated resting heart rate doesn’t point to a single cause. It’s more like a check-engine light: something is pushing the heart to work harder. Common culprits include:
- Chronic stress or anxiety, which keeps the body’s fight-or-flight system activated and floods the bloodstream with adrenaline-like hormones
- Dehydration, which reduces blood volume so the heart compensates by beating faster

Some medications can also nudge your rate higher. If your resting heart rate is regularly above 100 bpm and you aren’t obviously anxious or recently active, that pattern is worth investigating.
The Link to Long-Term Survival
One of the most striking things resting heart rate reveals is mortality risk. A large 16-year follow-up study of men in Copenhagen found a clear, graded relationship between resting heart rate and the chance of dying from any cause. Compared to men with rates at or below 50 bpm, those with rates between 51 and 80 bpm had roughly a 40 to 50% higher risk of death. Rates of 81 to 90 bpm doubled the risk, and rates above 90 bpm tripled it.
Expressed another way, every 10-bpm increase in resting heart rate was associated with a 16% increase in all-cause mortality after adjusting for other risk factors like fitness level, smoking, and body weight. That’s a meaningful jump for a metric most people never think about. A resting rate of 85 versus 65, for example, represents two full 10-bpm steps, or roughly a 32% higher relative risk.
These numbers don’t mean a high resting heart rate directly kills you. Rather, an elevated rate tends to travel with other problems: higher blood pressure, more inflammation, greater strain on blood vessel walls, and a nervous system tilted toward chronic stress. It’s both a marker of cardiovascular health and a contributor to wear and tear on the system over decades.
What a Low Resting Heart Rate Means
A rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. In athletes and physically active people, this is almost always benign. Their hearts are simply more efficient. Research in Circulation found that genetics also play a role: some people are born with slower intrinsic heart rates, and those individuals may be more likely to gravitate toward endurance sports in the first place because their hearts fill more completely at rest, producing greater cardiac output during exercise.
In people who aren’t physically active, a resting rate consistently below 60 bpm can occasionally signal a problem, particularly if it’s accompanied by dizziness, fatigue, or fainting. These symptoms suggest the heart may not be pumping enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Context matters: a rate of 55 in someone who jogs regularly is very different from a rate of 45 in someone who is sedentary and lightheaded.
How to Measure It Accurately
The number on your wrist tracker mid-afternoon, after coffee and a stressful email, is not your true resting heart rate. For a reliable reading, sit or lie down for at least five minutes in a calm environment. First thing in the morning, before getting out of bed, is ideal. Place two fingers on the inside of your wrist just below the thumb, count the beats for 30 seconds, and double it. Or use a pulse oximeter or fitness tracker while you’re still in bed.
Single readings are less useful than trends. Your heart rate shifts throughout the day based on hydration, temperature, meals, sleep quality, and emotional state. Track it at the same time and in the same position over several days to get a meaningful baseline. A gradual increase over weeks or months is more informative than any single number.
Factors That Shift Your Baseline
Beyond fitness and medical conditions, several everyday factors move the needle. Poor sleep raises resting heart rate the following day because it tips the nervous system toward a more activated state. Heat and humidity increase it because blood vessels dilate and blood pressure drops, prompting the heart to compensate. Even body position matters: standing typically adds 10 to 15 bpm compared to lying down, which is why consistency in how you measure is so important.
Chronic high caffeine intake deserves special attention. People who consume more than 600 mg of caffeine daily (about six cups of coffee) show significantly elevated heart rates that persist even after exercise and rest. At 400 mg daily, caffeine has been shown to measurably shift autonomic nervous system balance over time. If your resting rate is higher than you’d expect, your coffee habit is one of the first things worth examining.
Alcohol works through a different pathway but produces a similar result. Even moderate regular drinking can raise your resting rate, and the effect is dose-dependent. Reducing intake is one of the fastest ways most people see their resting heart rate drop.
Using Your Resting Heart Rate Practically
The real value of tracking your resting heart rate is in the trend line. A gradual decline over months after starting an exercise program is one of the most reliable signs that your cardiovascular fitness is improving. A sudden spike that lasts several days can signal overtraining, the onset of illness, or unusual stress, often before you notice other symptoms. Many endurance athletes use morning heart rate as a simple readiness check: if it’s 5 or more bpm above their usual baseline, they train lighter or rest.
For people not focused on athletic performance, the practical takeaway is simpler. A resting heart rate that stays in the 60s or low 70s is associated with the best long-term outcomes. If yours consistently sits in the 80s or above, the most effective levers are regular aerobic exercise, better sleep, stress management, and cutting back on caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol. These are the same interventions that improve nearly every other cardiovascular marker, which is part of why resting heart rate is such a useful summary metric.
