Several foods contain compounds that show real antiparasitic activity in lab and animal studies, and a few have been tested in humans with promising results. But an important caveat up front: no food is recognized by any major health authority as a standalone treatment for a confirmed parasitic infection. Standard medical treatment typically involves a single dose of prescription medication that clears the infection quickly. Foods with antiparasitic properties are best understood as supportive additions to your diet, not replacements for treatment if you actually have parasites.
Papaya Seeds
Papaya seeds are the most studied antiparasitic food in humans. In a trial of 60 Nigerian children with confirmed intestinal parasites, 71% of those who received dried papaya seeds cleared parasites from their stool completely. That’s a striking result for a food-based intervention, though it’s worth noting this is one relatively small study. The seeds contain enzymes that appear to break down the outer protective layer of intestinal worms, making them vulnerable to digestion and elimination.
To use papaya seeds, you can scoop them directly from the fruit, dry them, and grind them into a powder. The taste is peppery and slightly bitter. Most people mix the ground seeds into smoothies or honey. Fresh seeds from a ripe papaya are fine to eat as well.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds contain a compound called cucurbitacin that has been used to expel tapeworms and roundworms in livestock for years. Cucurbitacin appears to paralyze worms rather than kill them outright, which gives your digestive system time to flush them out through normal bowel movements. In animal research, ground pumpkin seeds mixed into feed at roughly 6 ounces per 75 pounds of body weight showed deworming effects.
For a 150-pound person, that would translate to about 12 ounces (roughly 1.5 cups) of ground pumpkin seeds per day, which is a large amount. Eating a handful of raw pumpkin seeds daily is unlikely to reach therapeutic levels, but they’re nutritionally dense and a reasonable food to include if you’re concerned about parasites. Raw or lightly toasted seeds retain more cucurbitacin than heavily roasted varieties.
Garlic
Garlic is one of the most broadly studied antiparasitic foods. Its active compound, allicin (released when garlic is crushed or chopped), has demonstrated activity against a wide range of parasites in lab settings. These include the protozoa that cause amoebic dysentery, giardia, and leishmaniasis, as well as common intestinal worms like pinworms and dwarf tapeworms.
The most compelling human evidence involves pinworms. In one study, garlic capsules taken twice daily for three consecutive days eliminated pinworm infection in 100% of patients. That’s a notable finding, though the study used standardized capsules rather than raw cloves, which makes dosing more consistent. For dwarf tapeworm, researchers tested raw garlic extract diluted in water (5 ml of extract in 100 ml of water, taken twice daily) and found it effective.
If you want to maximize garlic’s antiparasitic potential, crush or finely chop raw cloves and let them sit for 10 to 15 minutes before eating. This allows the active compound to fully form. Cooking garlic reduces its potency significantly.
Cloves
Cloves contain eugenol, a compound that shows activity against certain parasites and their eggs in lab studies, including roundworms and threadworms. The ability to target parasite eggs is notable because most antiparasitic compounds only affect adult worms, which means reinfection can occur from eggs that survive treatment. However, the evidence for cloves is limited to test-tube research, and effective doses for humans haven’t been established. Ground cloves can be added to food or brewed into tea, but there’s no reliable data on how much you’d need to consume for a meaningful effect.
Probiotic-Rich Foods
Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi support gut bacteria that may compete with parasites for resources and space. Specific strains of Lactobacillus and Enterococcus faecium have been shown to inhibit Giardia infection in lab and animal studies by reinforcing the immune response in the gut lining. The parasites essentially face a less hospitable environment when beneficial bacteria are thriving.
This isn’t a direct antiparasitic effect in the way garlic or papaya seeds work. It’s more about creating conditions that make it harder for parasites to establish themselves or persist. Regular consumption of fermented foods supports this kind of gut environment, but it won’t clear an active infection on its own.
Why Fiber Matters, but Not How You’d Expect
You might assume that eating lots of fiber would help flush parasites out by speeding up digestion. The reality is more complicated. Research in animals found that high levels of insoluble fiber (the kind in wheat bran, vegetable skins, and whole grains) did reduce the time food spent moving through the large intestine. But surprisingly, the animals on the highest-fiber diets actually had more worms and higher parasite egg production, not fewer. The mechanical stress of all that fiber passing through the gut appeared to damage the protective mucus layer, making the intestinal wall more vulnerable to parasites latching on.
Moderate fiber intake supports healthy digestion and regular bowel movements, which is generally good for gut health. But aggressively loading up on insoluble fiber as a parasite strategy could backfire.
What These Foods Can and Can’t Do
The foods above have genuine biological activity against parasites. Garlic and papaya seeds have the strongest evidence, with at least some human data supporting their use. Pumpkin seeds and cloves have solid lab and animal evidence but less human research. Probiotics play a supporting role by making the gut less hospitable to invaders.
None of these foods appear in CDC treatment guidelines for parasitic infections. Standard medical treatment uses prescription antiparasitic medications that typically require only a single dose and have high clearance rates. If you’re experiencing symptoms like persistent diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, visible worms in your stool, or abdominal pain that won’t resolve, those are signs of an active infection that warrants proper diagnosis and medical treatment. A stool test can identify exactly which parasite you’re dealing with, and targeted medication will resolve most infections quickly.
Where antiparasitic foods make the most sense is as a preventive habit or as a complement alongside medical treatment. Regularly including garlic, papaya seeds, pumpkin seeds, and fermented foods in your diet creates an intestinal environment that’s less friendly to parasites, even if none of these foods can reliably replace a prescription when an infection is already established.
