Your liver runs two main phases of detoxification: the first breaks down toxins into intermediate compounds, and the second attaches molecules to those intermediates so they become water-soluble and can be excreted. It blocks an enzyme in your intestines and liver that normally breaks these drugs down, causing them to build up to potentially dangerous levels. Watermelon for Kidney Function

Watermelon is the richest common food source of an amino acid called L-citrulline, which plays a direct role in how your body handles nitrogen waste. When your cells break down protein, ammonia is produced as a byproduct. L-citrulline helps speed up the conversion of ammonia into urea, a much less toxic compound that your kidneys can safely filter out.

About 75 to 80 percent of the L-citrulline circulating in your blood gets taken up by your kidneys, where it’s converted into L-arginine. This kidney-based conversion accounts for roughly 60 percent of your body’s total L-arginine production.
