What Function Is Performed by the Ignition System?

The ignition system performs one core function: it ignites the fuel-air mixture inside each cylinder of an internal combustion engine at precisely the right moment. To do this, it converts your car battery’s 12 volts into tens of thousands of volts, then delivers that energy as a spark across a tiny gap in each spark plug. Every part of the system exists to make that spark happen reliably, thousands of times per minute, with split-second accuracy.

How the Spark Is Created

A 12-volt car battery doesn’t produce nearly enough electrical pressure to jump a gap and ignite compressed fuel. The ignition coil solves this by acting as a transformer, stepping that 12 volts up to roughly 20,000 to 40,000 volts or more. This high-voltage pulse travels to the spark plug, where it arcs across a small gap between two electrodes. That arc is hot enough to ignite the compressed fuel-air mixture, triggering the combustion stroke that pushes the piston down and ultimately turns the wheels.

The spark plug gap is typically preset to around 0.75 to 0.8 mm (about 0.030 inches), though the ideal size depends on the engine. Naturally aspirated engines with lower compression often run gaps closer to 0.050 inches, while turbocharged or supercharged engines need smaller gaps, sometimes under 0.032 inches. A larger gap demands higher voltage. If the gap is too large for the system to handle, the spark will find an easier path to ground, possibly jumping along the outside of the plug or through the ignition wiring, and the cylinder misfires.

Why Timing Matters as Much as the Spark Itself

Creating a spark is only half the job. The ignition system must fire each plug at exactly the right point in the engine’s cycle. In a four-stroke engine, the spark needs to arrive just before the piston reaches the top of its compression stroke. Fire too early and you waste energy fighting the piston’s upward motion, creating excessive heat and higher nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Fire too late and the fuel burns inefficiently, reducing power and wasting fuel.

Modern engines rely on the engine control unit (ECU) to calculate spark timing in real time. A crankshaft position sensor tells the ECU exactly where each piston is in its cycle and how fast the engine is spinning. Combined with data from other sensors measuring air intake, engine temperature, and throttle position, the ECU adjusts timing millisecond by millisecond. This is what allows a modern engine to run smoothly whether you’re idling at a stoplight or accelerating onto a highway.

Older Systems vs. Modern Coil-on-Plug

Older ignition systems used a single coil paired with a distributor, a rotating mechanical switch that directed high-voltage pulses to each cylinder’s spark plug through a set of wires. The distributor worked, but it introduced moving parts that wore out and limited how precisely timing could be controlled.

Most modern engines use coil-on-plug (COP) systems, where each cylinder gets its own dedicated ignition coil mounted directly on top of its spark plug. This eliminates the distributor and spark plug wires entirely. The result is more precise spark timing, a stronger and more consistent spark, better fuel economy, and lower emissions. With fewer mechanical components to fail, COP systems are also more reliable over the life of the engine.

Some engines use a variation called “wasted spark,” where one coil serves two cylinders that reach the top of their strokes simultaneously. One cylinder gets a useful spark during compression while the other fires harmlessly during its exhaust stroke. The only real downside is slightly faster spark plug wear.

What Happens When the Ignition System Fails

Because the ignition system controls the fundamental event that keeps an engine running, failures tend to show up quickly and obviously. The most common symptoms include:

  • Loss of power: When voltage isn’t reaching the plugs properly, combustion is incomplete. Worn spark plugs, damaged coils, or frayed plug wires all reduce the energy available for each spark.
  • Rough idling and vibration: Misfires in one or more cylinders cause the engine to shake at idle. You may notice RPMs rising and falling unevenly, or sudden jolts when pressing the accelerator.
  • Hard starts or stalling: If the spark isn’t arriving at the right time or with enough energy, the engine may crank repeatedly before starting, or stall unexpectedly.
  • Backfiring: Unburned fuel reaching the exhaust system can ignite there, producing a loud pop. This typically points to a faulty plug or coil allowing fuel to pass through a cylinder unburned.
  • Poor fuel economy: When combustion is inconsistent, the ECU compensates by injecting more fuel. Drivers often notice a meaningful increase in fuel consumption before other symptoms become severe.

Any of these problems will usually trigger the check engine light. A diagnostic scan often points to a specific coil pack or spark plug, though faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensors can produce similar symptoms. These sensors can fail due to cracked housings, moisture exposure, or damaged wiring, and when they do, the ECU loses its ability to time the spark correctly.

The Ignition System’s Role in Emissions

Spark timing directly affects what comes out of the tailpipe. When timing is advanced (the spark fires earlier), combustion temperatures rise, which increases the formation of nitrogen oxides, a key component of smog. When timing is retarded (the spark fires later), temperatures drop but unburned fuel and carbon monoxide can increase. The ECU constantly balances these tradeoffs, adjusting timing to meet emissions targets while maintaining acceptable performance. A malfunctioning ignition system disrupts this balance, which is one reason a misfiring engine will fail an emissions test even if it still runs.
