If your dog ate a rat, the rat itself is unlikely to cause serious physical harm, but the real dangers are what the rat may have been carrying: poison, bacteria, or parasites. The level of risk depends heavily on whether the rat had consumed rodenticide, which is the most common and most urgent concern. Even if you’re not sure whether poison was involved, it’s worth calling your vet promptly, because symptoms of the most dangerous toxins can take days to appear.
Rodent Poison Is the Biggest Threat
The most serious risk isn’t the rat itself. It’s the possibility that the rat had eaten poison before your dog caught it. This is called secondary or “relay” poisoning, and it’s a well-documented problem in veterinary medicine. There are two main types of rodenticide to worry about, and they cause very different problems.
Anticoagulant Rodenticides
These are the most widely used rat poisons, and they work by preventing blood from clotting. When a dog ingests a poisoned rat, it can absorb enough of the toxin to develop the same clotting failure. Symptoms typically appear 2 to 5 days after exposure, which means your dog may seem perfectly fine for the first day or two. That delay is dangerous because it can create a false sense of security.
In a large retrospective study of 349 confirmed anticoagulant poisoning cases in dogs, 30% showed clinical signs. Among those dogs, the most common symptoms were lethargy (86%), difficulty breathing (55%), and visible bleeding (44%). Bleeding can show up in surprising places: nosebleeds, blood in the stool or urine, bruising under the skin, bleeding from the gums, or even bleeding into the chest cavity, which was the single most common hemorrhage site at 43% of cases. Some dogs also developed coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite.
The good news is that anticoagulant poisoning is treatable with vitamin K therapy if caught early. The bad news is that by the time a dog is visibly bleeding, the poisoning is already advanced.
Neurotoxic Rodenticides
Bromethalin is the other common rat poison, and it attacks the nervous system rather than the blood. The risk of secondary poisoning from eating a single rat is considered low but theoretically possible. At higher doses, dogs can develop a rapid-onset syndrome within 4 to 36 hours that includes hyperexcitability, muscle tremors, and seizures. At lower doses, a slower syndrome can develop over 1 to 5 days, causing hind-leg weakness, paralysis, and loss of coordination.
Unlike anticoagulant poisoning, there is no specific antidote for bromethalin. Treatment is supportive, which makes early intervention even more important. If your dog shows any neurological changes after eating a rat, including wobbliness, unusual stiffness, or difficulty walking, that warrants an emergency vet visit.
Bacterial Infections From Rats
Rats are reservoirs for several bacterial diseases, and a dog that eats an infected rat can pick them up through contact with the rat’s tissues or organs.
Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is the infection vets worry about most in this context. Rats commonly carry the bacteria in their kidneys and urine, and dogs can become infected by eating infected tissue. According to the CDC, early signs in dogs include fever, depression, lethargy, loss of appetite, joint or muscle pain, and discharge from the eyes or nose. Some dogs develop jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes. Within a few days, the disease can progress to vomiting, dehydration, and kidney failure.
There is a vaccine for leptospirosis, and if your dog is current on it, the risk drops significantly. If your dog isn’t vaccinated and has a habit of catching rodents, it’s worth discussing the vaccine with your vet.
Tularemia
Tularemia is a rarer bacterial infection, more commonly associated with rabbits than rats, but rodent contact is still a recognized route of exposure. In a study of 88 confirmed cases in dogs, 60% had known contact with wild rodents or rabbits. The hallmark signs were lethargy (92%), high fever (91%), and loss of appetite (76%). Some dogs also had swollen lymph nodes, vomiting, or diarrhea. The median body temperature at diagnosis was 104.2°F, well above the normal range for dogs.
Parasites Your Dog Can Pick Up
Rats serve as intermediate hosts for several parasites. When your dog eats a rat, it can ingest parasite larvae or cysts that then develop inside your dog’s body.
Roundworms are a notable concern. Rats can carry larval stages of certain roundworm species, and when a dog eats the rat, those larvae resume their development in the dog’s intestines. Coccidia, a single-celled intestinal parasite, can also be transmitted this way, with rats acting as carriers that pass the infection along when consumed. Dogs with coccidia often develop watery diarrhea, sometimes with blood.
Toxoplasmosis is another possibility, though dogs generally handle it well. Most infections are subclinical, meaning the dog carries the parasite without showing obvious symptoms. It rarely causes significant illness in otherwise healthy dogs.
If your dog is on a regular deworming schedule, the risk from parasites is lower. If not, your vet may recommend a fecal test a few weeks after the incident to check for new infections.
Can Rat Bones Cause a Blockage?
This is a reasonable worry, but rat bones are small and relatively fragile compared to the cooked chicken bones or rib bones that more commonly cause problems. Research on bone foreign bodies in dogs found that bones reaching the stomach generally dissolve on their own without complications. In a veterinary study, the majority of gastric bone foreign bodies were simply left in place to dissolve, with no reported complications. Rat bones, being thin and small, are even less likely to cause issues than larger bones.
That said, if your dog is a small breed, a whole adult rat could theoretically cause some gastrointestinal discomfort. Watch for repeated vomiting, straining to defecate, or signs of abdominal pain like whimpering or a hunched posture.
What to Watch For in the First 5 Days
Because the most dangerous consequence (rodenticide poisoning) can take up to 5 days to show symptoms, you need to monitor your dog closely during that window. The signs that should prompt an immediate vet visit include:
- Lethargy or unusual tiredness that goes beyond normal sleepiness
- Loss of appetite lasting more than a day
- Any bleeding from the nose, gums, in the stool (dark or tarry), in the urine, or bruising on the skin
- Difficulty breathing or coughing, which can indicate bleeding in the chest
- Vomiting, especially with blood
- Jaundice, visible as yellowing of the gums, the whites of the eyes, or the skin on the belly
- Neurological changes like tremors, wobbliness, weakness in the back legs, seizures, or unusual stiffness
- High fever, which you can check rectally (normal for dogs is 101 to 102.5°F)
If you know or suspect that rat poison is used anywhere in your neighborhood, garage, yard, or the area where your dog found the rat, tell your vet immediately. Knowing the type of poison (the brand name or active ingredient, often printed on the packaging) can make a critical difference in how quickly and effectively your dog is treated. If you can find the bait packaging, bring it with you to the vet.
What Your Vet Will Likely Do
If the rat was eaten very recently (within the last 1 to 2 hours), your vet may induce vomiting to reduce the amount of toxin absorbed. Beyond that window, the approach depends on the suspected risk. For anticoagulant exposure, your vet will typically run a clotting test and may start preventive vitamin K treatment even before symptoms appear. For bromethalin concerns, the focus is on decontamination and monitoring, since there’s no antidote. If infection is the concern, blood work and a physical exam help guide treatment.
Even if your dog seems fine, a quick call to your vet or an animal poison control hotline right after the incident gives you the best chance of catching problems before they escalate. Many cases of rodenticide poisoning have good outcomes when treatment starts early, but become life-threatening when symptoms are the first warning.
