Why Zyn Pouches Are Dangerous for Dogs

The median lethal dose of nicotine in dogs is 9.2 mg/kg of body weight. To put that in perspective, a 10-pound (4.5 kg) dog would only need about 4.5 mg of nicotine to show clinical signs of poisoning, and a single 6 mg Zyn pouch already exceeds that threshold.

The good news: Zyn pouches do not contain xylitol, a sweetener found in some products that is extremely toxic to dogs on its own. Zyn uses acesulfame K as its sweetener, along with fillers like maltitol and cellulose. These ingredients are not a major concern. Nicotine is the real danger here.

Symptoms to Watch For

Symptoms of nicotine poisoning typically appear within two hours of ingestion, though they can start much sooner if the dog chewed the pouch open. What to Do Right Now

Call your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline immediately. Do not try to induce vomiting on your own unless specifically instructed to do so by a professional. In some cases, inducing vomiting is the right move because it removes nicotine before it’s absorbed, but the timing and your dog’s current condition matter. A dog that’s already showing neurological symptoms like tremors or extreme agitation could aspirate vomit, making the situation worse.

What Happens at the Vet

Beyond decontamination, treatment is supportive.
