If your dog eats a battery, it’s a veterinary emergency. Batteries can cause serious chemical burns to the mouth, esophagus, and stomach in as little as one to two hours, even without leaking. The faster you get your dog to a vet, the less damage the battery will do. Do not wait to see if symptoms appear, and do not try to make your dog vomit.

Why Batteries Are So Dangerous

Most people assume the danger comes from a battery leaking acid, but the primary threat is actually electrical. When a battery sits against moist tissue, it generates a low-voltage current that splits the body’s own fluids into caustic chemicals. Sodium hydroxide (essentially lye) builds up at the battery’s negative pole, burning through tissue from the outside in. This process starts immediately on contact and doesn’t require the battery casing to break open at all.

Researchers confirmed this by placing doubly-encapsulated batteries (a sealed can inside another sealed can) in the esophagus of test animals. Despite zero possibility of leakage, the batteries still caused tissue injury. The damage concentrated around the negative pole, consistent with this electrolytic burn mechanism rather than acid leakage.

If the battery does leak, the contents add a second layer of injury. Alkaline batteries release potassium hydroxide, another strong base that causes deep chemical burns. Lithium button batteries are especially dangerous because they carry 3 volts, twice the voltage of standard alkaline button cells, producing more severe electrochemical burns in less time.

Button Batteries vs. Larger Batteries

Small, round button batteries (the kind found in watches, hearing aids, remote controls, and small toys) pose the greatest risk. Their smooth, flat shape makes them likely to lodge in the esophagus rather than pass through, and a stuck battery causes continuous, escalating damage. A lithium button battery lodged in the esophagus can cause visible tissue ulceration within one to two hours and full-thickness burns that penetrate the esophageal wall within hours after that.

Larger cylindrical batteries (AA, AAA, C, D) are less likely to get stuck in the esophagus of a medium or large dog, but they still pose risks. A dog that punctures the casing by chewing can release corrosive contents directly into the mouth and stomach. Even if swallowed intact, a large battery sitting in the stomach can cause burns over time and may be too big to pass through the intestines on its own, creating an obstruction.

Signs Your Dog Has Eaten a Battery

Sometimes you’ll find the chewed-up remains of a remote control or toy and know exactly what happened. Other times, the first clue is your dog’s behavior. Watch for:

  • Excessive drooling, often the earliest and most obvious sign
  • Pawing at the mouth or reluctance to eat
  • Grey or white patches inside the mouth, on the gums, tongue, or roof, which are chemical burns
  • Vomiting, sometimes with blood
  • Abdominal pain, shown by whimpering, restlessness, or a hunched posture
  • Refusal to eat or drink
  • Dark or tarry stool, indicating bleeding further down the digestive tract

Ulceration from battery contact can appear within one to two hours, but the full extent of the chemical injury can take up to 24 hours to develop. This means your dog may look relatively okay at first and worsen significantly over the next day. Absence of immediate symptoms does not mean the battery is harmless.

What Not to Do at Home

Do not induce vomiting. This is the most important thing to remember. If the battery is in the stomach, forcing it back up means it passes through the esophagus a second time, potentially lodging there or exposing already-damaged tissue to corrosive material again. The esophagus is thinner and more vulnerable than the stomach lining, so a second pass can turn a manageable injury into a life-threatening one.

Do not give your dog activated charcoal. It doesn’t bind to the alkaline or metallic compounds in batteries and will only delay proper treatment. Do not adopt a “wait and see” approach hoping the battery will pass naturally. While small batteries occasionally do transit through a large dog’s digestive system without major harm, you have no way of knowing whether the battery is stuck, leaking, or actively burning tissue without veterinary imaging.

What the Vet Will Do

Your vet will start with X-rays. Batteries show up clearly on radiographs, which reveal the battery’s location, size, and whether it’s intact or broken apart. This determines the next steps.

If the battery is in the esophagus, removal is urgent. The vet will typically use an endoscope, a flexible camera inserted through the mouth, to locate and extract the battery. This is done under anesthesia. If the battery has already caused significant damage to the esophageal wall, or if it’s too large to retrieve endoscopically, surgery may be necessary.

If the battery has reached the stomach, the situation is still serious but slightly less time-critical. Endoscopic retrieval from the stomach is common. If the battery has moved into the intestines and is small enough to pass, the vet may monitor its progress with repeat X-rays every few hours. Surgical removal becomes necessary if the battery stops moving, shows signs of leaking, or if your dog’s condition worsens.

After the battery is out, the vet will assess the extent of tissue damage. Chemical burns to the digestive tract can deepen over the following 24 hours even after the source is removed, so your dog will likely need to stay at the clinic for monitoring.

Recovery After Battery Removal

Recovery depends entirely on how much damage the battery caused before it was removed. A battery that passed through quickly and didn’t lodge anywhere may leave your dog with minor irritation that heals within a few days. A battery that was stuck in the esophagus for several hours can cause deep ulceration that takes weeks to heal and carries risks of scarring or stricture (narrowing of the esophagus).

In the days after removal, your vet will likely prescribe medications to protect the healing tissue, reduce stomach acid, and prevent infection. Your dog will probably need a modified diet during recovery. Soft, calorie-dense foods (like veterinary critical care diets in pâté form) are easier to swallow and less likely to irritate damaged tissue. Warming the food slightly can help encourage eating if your dog is reluctant. The vet may recommend feeding smaller, more frequent meals rather than one or two large ones.

Watch for signs that healing isn’t going well: continued refusal to eat, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or weight loss. These could indicate that scar tissue is narrowing the esophagus, which sometimes requires additional treatment.

Heavy Metal Toxicity

Beyond the burn risk, batteries contain metals that are toxic if absorbed into the bloodstream. Zinc is the most common concern, found in many alkaline and button cell batteries. If a dog chews through the casing or a battery breaks apart in the stomach, zinc can leach into the digestive tract and enter the bloodstream, causing destruction of red blood cells, liver damage, and kidney failure. Symptoms of zinc toxicity include lethargy, orange or brown urine, loss of appetite, and pale gums, sometimes appearing one to three days after ingestion.

Some older batteries contain lead, which causes its own set of problems including neurological symptoms and gastrointestinal distress. Your vet may run blood tests to check for metal levels if there’s any suspicion that battery contents were released into the digestive tract.

How Quickly You Need to Act

The timeline matters enormously. Tissue damage begins within minutes of a battery making contact with moist tissue, and visible ulceration develops within one to two hours. For button batteries lodged in the esophagus, the difference between a two-hour removal and a six-hour removal can be the difference between surface-level irritation and a perforation that requires major surgery.
