Eating too many nuts in a single sitting typically causes bloating, gas, and stomach discomfort, thanks to their high fiber and fat content. In most cases, these effects are temporary and harmless. But consistently overdoing it, especially with certain types of nuts, can lead to more serious problems ranging from selenium poisoning to kidney stone formation.
A standard serving of nuts is one ounce, or roughly a small handful. The Mayo Clinic recommends about four to six servings per week as part of a healthy diet. Going well beyond that is where trouble starts.
Digestive Problems Come First
Nuts are packed with both fiber and fat, two things your digestive system has to work hard to process. A handful or two is fine for most people, but eating large quantities overwhelms your gut. The fiber draws water into the intestines and feeds gut bacteria that produce gas as a byproduct. Meanwhile, the high fat content slows digestion, leaving food sitting in your stomach longer than usual. The result is a predictable combination of bloating, cramps, gas, and sometimes diarrhea.
These symptoms are uncomfortable but short-lived. They typically resolve within a day as your body finishes processing the excess fiber and fat. If you’re not used to eating high-fiber foods, your tolerance will be even lower, and a smaller amount can trigger discomfort.
Brazil Nuts Can Cause Selenium Poisoning
Brazil nuts are in a category of their own. A single Brazil nut contains 68 to 91 micrograms of selenium, and the safe daily upper limit for adults is 400 micrograms. That means eating just five or six nuts in a day could push you past that threshold. One ounce (about eight nuts) delivers roughly 544 micrograms, nearly 800% of the recommended daily allowance.
Chronic overconsumption leads to a condition called selenosis. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, hair loss, brittle nails, nerve pain, and a persistent garlicky smell on your breath. The recommendation is to eat no more than one or two Brazil nuts per day, and not every day. This is one nut where “a handful” is genuinely too many.
Weight Gain Is Less Likely Than You’d Think
Nuts are calorie-dense. An ounce of most varieties runs 160 to 200 calories, so it seems logical that eating a lot of them would cause weight gain. But the relationship is more nuanced than simple calorie math suggests.
A large study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health tracked nut intake and body weight in U.S. men and women over multiple four-year periods. Increasing nut consumption by half a serving per day was actually associated with slightly less weight gain over time, not more. Several mechanisms explain this. Nuts require a lot of chewing, which slows eating and helps your brain register fullness. Their fiber delays stomach emptying and suppresses hunger. And your body doesn’t absorb all the calories in nuts. Studies have shown that 5% to over 20% of the fat in nuts passes through the digestive tract unabsorbed, ending up as waste.
That said, these protective effects have limits. If you’re eating several cups of nuts on top of your normal meals, the calorie surplus will eventually show up on the scale. The satiety benefits work best when nuts replace other snacks, not when they’re piled on top of everything else.
Kidney Stone Risk From Oxalates
If you’re prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones, the most common type, large amounts of certain nuts are worth watching. Oxalates are natural compounds in many plant foods that bind to calcium in your urinary tract and can form stones. Nuts are among the highest oxalate foods available.
Almonds top the list at 122 milligrams of oxalate per ounce. Cashews come in at 49 milligrams, mixed nuts at 39 milligrams, and walnuts at 31 milligrams per small serving. Even peanuts carry 27 milligrams per ounce. For comparison, pecans are lower at 10 milligrams, and flaxseeds contain essentially none.
For most people, moderate nut intake poses no kidney stone risk. But if you’ve had stones before or have been told you excrete high levels of oxalate, eating large quantities of almonds or cashews daily could be a meaningful contributor. Staying well-hydrated helps offset the risk by diluting oxalate concentration in urine.
Phytic Acid and Mineral Absorption
Nuts contain phytic acid, a compound that binds to iron, zinc, magnesium, and calcium in your gut and prevents them from being absorbed. This effect only matters when you eat nuts at the same meal as foods containing those minerals. If you’re relying on a spinach salad with almonds for your iron and calcium intake, for example, you may absorb less of both than you’d expect.
In practice, this is rarely a problem for people eating a varied diet. The concern is more relevant in populations where nuts, legumes, or whole grains are dietary staples consumed at every meal with limited food variety. If you eat a typical mixed diet, the phytic acid in nuts won’t create a deficiency. Soaking or roasting nuts reduces their phytic acid content somewhat, though this is more of an optimization than a necessity for most people.
Salted Nuts Add Up Sodium Quickly
Raw nuts contain almost no sodium. A full cup of dry-roasted unsalted peanuts has just 9 milligrams. But flavored and salted varieties are a different story. Lightly salted mixed nuts contain about 46 milligrams per ounce, and heavily salted or seasoned versions can be significantly higher. Roasted, salted pumpkin seeds jump to over 300 milligrams per cup.
When you’re eating nuts by the handful in front of a screen, it’s easy to go through several ounces without noticing. Three or four ounces of salted nuts can contribute a meaningful chunk of your daily sodium limit, which matters if you’re managing blood pressure. Choosing raw or unsalted varieties eliminates this concern entirely.
Omega-6 Fats and Inflammation
Most nuts are high in omega-6 fatty acids relative to omega-3s. A diet with a high omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is associated with increased inflammation, obesity, and metabolic problems. Walnuts are the notable exception: they contain a meaningful amount of an omega-3 fat that the body can partially convert into the same anti-inflammatory compounds found in fish oil. Research in animals has shown that walnut consumption actually lowers the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in blood, liver, and fat tissue.
For other nuts like almonds, pecans, and especially peanuts, the omega-6 content is high and omega-3 content is negligible. Eating very large amounts of these nuts daily without balancing them with omega-3 sources (fatty fish, flaxseed, chia seeds) could theoretically shift your overall fat balance in an unfavorable direction. At normal intake levels, this isn’t a practical concern for most people.
Aflatoxin Contamination
Nuts stored in warm, humid conditions can develop mold that produces aflatoxins, toxic compounds linked to an increased risk of liver cancer. Peanuts and tree nuts are among the foods most susceptible to aflatoxin contamination. Commercial nut products in the U.S. and Europe are tested and regulated, but bulk bins, improperly stored bags, and imported nuts carry higher risk. If your nuts taste bitter, look discolored, or smell off, discard them. Proper storage in a cool, dry place (or the refrigerator for longer storage) reduces the risk substantially.
