Mixing Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and alcohol amplifies the sedating effects of both substances, potentially causing extreme drowsiness, dangerously slowed breathing, and severe impairment of coordination and judgment. How the Two Substances Interact
Benadryl and alcohol both slow down activity in the central nervous system, which controls everything from alertness and coordination to breathing and heart rate. When you take them together, the depressant effects don’t just add up. They compound in ways that are hard to predict based on how either substance affects you alone. On top of the sedation, Benadryl has anticholinergic properties, meaning it blocks a chemical messenger involved in many automatic body functions. How Long to Wait Between the Two
Diphenhydramine has a half-life of 7 to 12 hours in adults, which means it takes roughly 24 hours for the drug to fully clear your system. For older adults, the half-life extends to 9 to 18 hours, meaning full clearance can take up to 36 hours.
The safest approach is to wait until diphenhydramine has left your body entirely before drinking. That means waiting at least 24 hours after your last dose if you’re a younger adult, and closer to 36 hours if you’re over 65. Taking Benadryl at night and having drinks the next afternoon, for example, puts you in a window where a significant amount of the drug is still active in your system.
The same logic works in reverse. If you’ve been drinking, wait until the alcohol has fully cleared before taking Benadryl. Alcohol is metabolized at roughly one standard drink per hour, but individual variation is significant, and residual effects on your nervous system can linger beyond the point where your blood alcohol level hits zero.
Why Some People Are at Higher Risk
