For these patients, the individual benefit of statins depends on their overall risk profile.
Some physicians consider it reasonable to pause a statin and monitor cholesterol through lifestyle changes alone, particularly for lower-risk patients or older adults where the long-term data is less clear. One study of adults over 85 found no significant difference in one-year mortality between those who stopped statins and those who continued them, though this was specifically in the oldest age group. Why People Stop in the First Place
