Taking fenugreek daily can affect your body in several measurable ways, from shifts in blood sugar and testosterone levels to changes in digestion and even the way you smell. Most clinical studies use daily doses of 5 to 10 grams of seed powder or 600 to 1,200 milligrams of concentrated extract, with trials lasting anywhere from a few weeks to three years. Here’s what the evidence shows about what happens in your body with consistent, daily use.
Blood Sugar Drops Noticeably
The most consistent effect of daily fenugreek is a reduction in fasting blood sugar. A meta-analysis of clinical trials in people with type 2 diabetes found that fenugreek supplementation lowered fasting blood sugar by about 20 mg/dL on average. That’s a meaningful drop, roughly equivalent to what some people achieve with lifestyle changes alone. The effect appears to come partly from fenugreek’s high soluble fiber content, which slows the absorption of sugar from your gut into your bloodstream.
Interestingly, fenugreek also improved insulin resistance scores in these trials, meaning your cells become slightly better at responding to insulin over time. However, it didn’t change the amount of insulin your body actually produced. If you’re already taking medication to lower your blood sugar, this stacking effect is something to be aware of, since combining fenugreek with glucose-lowering drugs could push your blood sugar too low.
Testosterone May Rise Modestly
Fenugreek is heavily marketed as a testosterone booster, and there is some clinical support for that claim, though the picture is more nuanced than supplement labels suggest. In a 12-week trial of 95 men aged 40 to 80, those taking fenugreek extract saw their free testosterone index rise by about 11 to 16 percent compared to baseline. However, when compared against the placebo group, the difference only reached statistical significance at the highest dose tested (1,800 mg of extract daily), where free testosterone increased by about 12 percent.
Saliva testosterone told a slightly more dramatic story. At any dose, saliva levels rose about 31 percent from baseline and 37 percent compared to placebo. This discrepancy between blood and saliva measurements is worth noting. Saliva testosterone can fluctuate more and may not reflect what’s happening at the tissue level. The takeaway: daily fenugreek likely nudges testosterone upward, but the effect is modest and may require higher doses to be meaningful. Don’t expect it to replicate what hormone therapy delivers.
Your Digestion Changes
Fenugreek seeds are roughly 50 percent fiber by weight, and the dominant type is a soluble fiber called galactomannan. When you take fenugreek daily, this fiber absorbs water in your stomach and thickens your gastric contents, which slows the rate at which food moves into your small intestine. The practical result is that you feel full longer after meals. In studies tracking self-reported outcomes, about 90 percent of participants noticed improved bowel regularity, and 20 to 30 percent reported reduced appetite or stronger feelings of fullness.
This slower gastric emptying also triggers your gut to release more of its natural satiety hormones (the same ones targeted by some popular weight loss medications). That said, fenugreek doesn’t reliably cause weight loss on its own. It’s better understood as a tool for appetite regulation and intake control rather than a fat burner. About 30 percent of users also reported improved gastric comfort, which may relate to the fiber’s ability to buffer stomach acidity.
The downside of all that fiber: flatulence and diarrhea are among the most commonly reported side effects, especially in the first week or two. Starting with a lower dose and building up can help your gut adjust.
Inflammation Markers Decline
Daily fenugreek appears to reduce several markers of inflammation in the body. In a study of patients with high cholesterol, those taking fenugreek seeds saw two key inflammatory markers drop significantly: one fell by 22.5 percent and the other by 27.8 percent compared to placebo. The study also measured markers of oxidative stress (essentially, cellular damage from unstable molecules) and found those declined from baseline as well.
These are meaningful reductions, though it’s important to note they were measured in people who already had elevated cholesterol, a condition associated with chronic low-grade inflammation. Whether the same anti-inflammatory effect occurs in healthy people taking fenugreek as a general supplement is less clear.
You’ll Probably Smell Different
One of the most surprising and universally reported effects of daily fenugreek use is a change in body odor. Fenugreek contains a compound called sotolon, which at low concentrations produces a distinct maple syrup smell. Your body doesn’t break sotolon down. It passes through unchanged and exits in your sweat and urine. This means that within a day or two of starting daily fenugreek, you (or people close to you) may notice a sweet, maple-like scent on your skin or in the bathroom. It’s harmless, but it catches people off guard. The smell persists for as long as you keep taking fenugreek and fades once you stop.
Risks With Certain Medications
Two major interaction risks stand out with daily use. The first is blood thinners. Fenugreek may contain compounds related to coumarin, and case reports have documented increased bleeding time in patients taking warfarin alongside fenugreek. Clinical pharmacology guidelines caution against combining fenugreek with any drug or herb that affects bleeding time.
The second concern is hypoglycemia. Because fenugreek independently lowers blood sugar, stacking it with diabetes medications can cause your levels to drop further than intended. This is especially relevant with higher fenugreek doses.
Other reported unwanted effects include allergic skin reactions and, rarely, systemic allergic responses. People with legume allergies (fenugreek is in the same family as peanuts and chickpeas) may be at higher risk.

Clinical trials have used two main forms. Whole seed powder is typically dosed at 5 to 10 grams per day, which is roughly one to two teaspoons. This is the form with the most fiber and the strongest digestive effects. Concentrated seed extract is used at much lower amounts, generally 600 to 1,200 milligrams daily, and is more common in capsule supplements marketed for testosterone or blood sugar support. Studies have safely used seed powder at these doses for up to three years.
The form you choose matters because the effects differ. If your goal is appetite control and blood sugar management, the whole seed powder delivers more fiber. If you’re interested in the hormonal effects, the concentrated extract at higher doses (up to 1,800 mg) is what the testosterone studies used. Either way, consistent daily intake over at least 8 to 12 weeks appears necessary before the measurable effects show up in clinical tests.
