Expired sunscreen loses its ability to protect your skin from UV radiation, which means you can get a sunburn even when you think you’re covered. The protective ingredients break down over time, and the formula itself can separate, grow bacteria, or irritate your skin. Most sunscreens are designed to remain stable for three years, but heat, humidity, and improper storage can shorten that window significantly.
Your SPF Drops, Sometimes Dramatically
The most immediate risk of using expired sunscreen is reduced protection. The active ingredients that absorb or reflect UV rays degrade over time, and the SPF number on the bottle no longer reflects what you’re actually getting. Chemical sunscreens are particularly vulnerable because their UV-filtering compounds break down into less effective molecules as they age. A bottle labeled SPF 50 might deliver SPF 25 or less once it’s past its prime.
To put that in perspective, even fresh sunscreen loses potency throughout the day. One clinical study found that SPF 70 sunscreen applied at the recommended thickness still offered an SPF above 64 after eight hours, but at half the recommended application thickness, it dropped to about 26. SPF 15 applied thinly fell to just 7 after eight hours. Now layer expiration-related degradation on top of that natural decline, and you can see how quickly protection evaporates. You could be getting a fraction of the coverage you expect, leaving you vulnerable to sunburn, premature aging, and long-term skin damage.
Skin Irritation and Breakouts
As sunscreen ingredients break down, they can form new chemical byproducts that weren’t in the original formula. These degradation products are more likely to irritate your skin, causing redness, stinging, or contact dermatitis, especially if you have sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens pose a higher risk here because their active compounds are inherently more reactive than the mineral filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) found in physical sunscreens.
Expired sunscreen can also harbor bacteria and mold. The preservatives that keep microbial growth in check lose effectiveness over time, and every time you open the cap or dip your fingers into a jar, you introduce new organisms. Applying a contaminated product to your face or body can trigger breakouts, folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles), or fungal skin infections. This risk is higher with pump bottles or jars that have been sitting open in warm, humid bathrooms.
How to Tell Your Sunscreen Has Gone Bad
Sometimes expired sunscreen looks and feels perfectly normal, which is part of the problem. But there are some clear warning signs:
- Separation. If you see a watery layer on top or the formula looks curdled, the emulsion has broken down and the ingredients are no longer evenly distributed.
- Texture changes. Mineral sunscreens in particular develop a gritty, pebble-like texture when they expire. The zinc oxide or titanium dioxide particles clump together and won’t rub smoothly into your skin.
- Color shifts. Yellowing or darkening of a white cream signals chemical degradation.
- Unusual smell. A sour, rancid, or chemical odor means the formula has broken down or become contaminated.
If any of these are present, toss it. If none are present but the sunscreen is past its expiration date, toss it anyway. You can’t see UV-filtering degradation with the naked eye.
How Long Sunscreen Actually Lasts
FDA regulations require sunscreen manufacturers to include an expiration date unless their stability testing proves the product remains effective for at least three years. If your sunscreen has no printed expiration date, consider it expired three years after you bought it. Write the purchase date on the bottle with a permanent marker so you’re not guessing later.
Many sunscreens also carry a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol, a small icon of an open jar with a number like “12M” or “18M.” That tells you how many months the product stays good after you first open it. A sunscreen with a “12M” label should be replaced within a year of opening, even if the printed expiration date is further out. Once air and fingers start getting into the container, the clock speeds up.
Heat and Storage Matter as Much as the Date
A sunscreen stored in a cool, dark cabinet will age very differently from one left in your car’s glove compartment or tossed in a beach bag all summer. High temperatures accelerate the breakdown of UV filters and preservatives alike. A bottle that bakes in a hot car for a few hours can lose meaningful protection even if it’s technically within its expiration window.
Store your sunscreen at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. If you’re spending time outdoors, keep the bottle in a cooled bag or at least in the shade. And if your sunscreen has been through a full summer of heat exposure, treat it as closer to expiration than the date suggests. At roughly $10 to $15 per bottle, replacing sunscreen annually is far cheaper than treating a bad sunburn or dealing with long-term UV damage.
