Eating too much protein forces your body to work harder to process the excess, and over time that extra workload can show up as digestive problems, dehydration, bad breath, and stress on your kidneys and liver. When you eat protein, your body breaks it down into amino acids and produces nitrogen waste, primarily in the form of urea. Your kidneys filter that urea out of your blood and send it into your urine. The more protein you eat, the more urea they need to handle.

Dehydration Sneaks Up on You

Certain high-protein foods are rich in compounds called purines. When your body breaks purines down, the end product is uric acid. Beyond that, the kidneys, liver, and digestive system start absorbing the consequences of the excess. For a 180-pound person, that ceiling is roughly 164 grams of protein per day.
Most people eating a standard Western diet get more protein than they need without trying. The real problems tend to emerge in people who stack protein shakes on top of already protein-heavy meals, or who follow extreme diets that treat protein as the only macronutrient worth prioritizing. Balancing protein with adequate fiber, hydration, and variety in your sources is what separates a high-protein diet that works from one that quietly creates problems.
