What Happens When You Take Too Much Melatonin?

Taking too much melatonin is unlikely to be life-threatening, but it can make you feel surprisingly unwell. The most common effects are excessive drowsiness, headaches, nausea, and dizziness. These symptoms usually resolve on their own, but higher doses carry additional risks, especially for children and people on certain medications.

Common Symptoms of Too Much Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone your brain naturally produces to signal that it’s time to sleep. When you flood your system with more than it needs, the most frequent problems involve your brain and gut. CDC data on melatonin ingestions shows that over 81% of symptomatic cases involved the central nervous system, with effects like excessive sleepiness, grogginess, confusion, and headaches. About 10% involved gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or stomach cramps. A smaller percentage, roughly 2.5%, experienced cardiovascular effects.

Many people also report unusually vivid or disturbing dreams after taking high doses. Because melatonin influences your sleep cycles, too much of it can actually fragment your sleep rather than deepen it, leaving you feeling groggy and unrested the next morning. This “melatonin hangover” is one of the most common complaints, and it can linger well into the following day if you took a large dose.

If you accidentally take one or two extra tablets beyond your normal dose, that’s generally not cause for alarm. The NHS notes that taking a small amount over your usual dose is unlikely to cause harm. Feeling unwell after a larger amount is a reason to call a health advice line or poison control.

How Much Is Too Much

There is no officially established toxic dose for melatonin, which is part of the problem. For short-term insomnia, a standard dose is 2 mg taken one to two hours before bed. For longer-term sleep issues, doses may be gradually increased up to 10 mg under medical guidance. For jet lag, the typical dose is 3 to 6 mg.

Most sleep researchers consider anything above 5 mg for a healthy adult to be more than the body needs, and many suggest starting at 0.5 to 1 mg. The fact that melatonin is sold in 5 mg and even 10 mg tablets over the counter leads many people to take far more than necessary without realizing it.

Complicating matters further: what’s on the label often isn’t what’s in the bottle. A study highlighted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that more than 71% of melatonin supplements failed to match their label claims within a 10% margin. Actual melatonin content ranged from 83% less than listed to 478% more. Even different batches of the same product varied by as much as 465%. So you may be taking significantly more (or less) melatonin than you think.

Risks for Children

Children are especially vulnerable. Between 2012 and 2021, pediatric melatonin ingestions reported to U.S. poison control centers rose dramatically, driven in part by the growing availability of melatonin gummies that look and taste like candy. The symptoms mirror those in adults but can be more severe relative to body size: deep drowsiness, stomach upset, and in some cases cardiovascular effects. Children with neurological conditions face an additional concern, as melatonin may lower the seizure threshold and increase seizure frequency.

Effects of Long-Term High Doses

Taking large amounts of melatonin night after night raises a different set of concerns. Because melatonin is a hormone, it doesn’t just affect sleep. It interacts with other hormonal systems in your body. Evidence published in Psychiatric Times points to impaired glucose tolerance with regular melatonin use, meaning your body becomes less efficient at processing blood sugar. Studies have found that melatonin is associated with elevated glucose and insulin levels in the evening, and over time these changes could increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

This doesn’t mean a few weeks of melatonin will give you diabetes. But if you’ve been taking 10 or 20 mg nightly for months or years, the metabolic effects are worth being aware of, particularly if you already have risk factors for blood sugar problems.

Medication Interactions That Raise the Stakes

Too much melatonin becomes a bigger problem when it interacts with other drugs you’re taking. Several common medication categories don’t mix well with melatonin, and higher doses amplify these interactions.

  • Blood thinners. Melatonin may increase bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants or anti-platelet drugs.
  • Blood pressure medications. Melatonin can worsen blood pressure control in people already being treated for hypertension.
  • Sedatives and sleep aids. Combining melatonin with other central nervous system depressants creates an additive sedative effect, increasing the risk of excessive drowsiness or slowed breathing.
  • Anti-seizure medications. Melatonin may reduce the effectiveness of anticonvulsants, particularly in children with neurological conditions.
  • Immunosuppressants. Melatonin can stimulate the immune system, potentially interfering with drugs designed to suppress it, such as those used after organ transplants.
  • Birth control pills. Hormonal contraceptives combined with melatonin may produce additive sedation and amplify melatonin’s side effects.
  • Certain antidepressants. Fluvoxamine, used for obsessive-compulsive disorder, can cause melatonin levels to spike dramatically, leading to excessive drowsiness even at normal doses.

If you’re taking any of these medications, even a moderately high dose of melatonin could produce effects that a healthy person taking the same amount wouldn’t experience.

What to Do If You’ve Taken Too Much

If you or someone in your household has taken a large dose and feels fine, the most likely outcome is extra sleepiness and possibly some nausea. Staying hydrated and riding it out is usually sufficient. Avoid driving or operating anything dangerous, since the drowsiness can be significant and last longer than expected.
